Yes, i know, it is because I am working with Word until now, but would like to 
change to ConTeXt.  If I set there a footnote, then there comes an pop-up 
window with the text. 

A Discussion would be very interesting.

Hello,

It is an interesting comment going beyond the simple (yet important) question 
of accessibility: how in general should items such as footnotes be handled in 
alternative, non-printed formats, where the notion of a "page" becomes fuzzy?

With ConTeXt, it is easy to have such "footnotes" placed at the bottom of the 
formatted page, at the end of a section, chapter or book. It is also easy for 
them to have hyperlinks to jump to their location and then back to the 
reference text.

Tooltips and other widgets, as Hans says, depend on the display client and not 
on the document - there are many things that might work with one reader (i.e. 
Adobe) and not on others. Addressing the questions of accessibility, in 
particular for blind or otherwise vision-impaired readers, one can design an 
appropriate action or model for the document. Footnotes and endnotes are useful 
tools for a writer. Like indexes, bibliographic references, or floating figures 
or tables, these are concepts that might require some thought as to how they 
might be employed in an ebook or by an audio reader. This would make an 
interesting topic of discussion for our next ConTeXt users' meeting.

The {-}{}{\zwnj} is in fact a discretionary spec because you probably 
would like to permit hyphenation. You could inject just a \nzwj .


Btw, keep in mind that in context this kind of manipulations happens in 
ways that don't interfere too much with macro expansion and other trickery.

  I think the point is that often in German, breakpoints for hyphenation
also break ligatures.  I mentioned that in Nasbinals.

example when yours arrived. The latest beta seems to be doing the right
thing. FYI: my example was an entity "linebreak" which I wanted to
induce a linebreak (duh!) in the pdf but not when I serve the file via
xsl...

That should work for Ibn Saeed, but it's not a complete solution.  For
example it does not work if one wants to write "page x of y" instead, with
"page" and "y" written in Arabic/Persian.  Then the text of the header is
partly LTR and part RTL.

This is still simple and I can use my hacky solution and mix \lefttoright
and \righttoleft to get it right.  But is it possible to extend the
\setupdirections[bidi=on] to apply to parts other than the main text?  I
just noticed this does not apply to footnotes either.  Having numbers in
the TRL footnote text produces incorrect typesetting.

Also \arabicnumerals is probably not what you want: this will produce an
abjad-like sequence:
ا ب ج د ه و ز ...

I guess, what you want is called \arabicdecimals, and was not part of MkIV
for a while.  (For instance, it is not in standard TeXLive 2015
distribution whose CONTEXT version is for sometime in the summer.)  Use the
CONTEXT standalone and you should be good to go.

ConTeXt resets many settings for headers, footers, footnotes etc. and 
have to set them again for these elements.


To apply the bidi setting to footnotes you have to add

\startsetups[bidi:footnotes]
  \setupdirection[bidi=on]
\stopsetups

\setupnotes[footnote][setups=bidi:footnotes]

to your document.

The guts of the selnolig package just call \hyphenation{...}:

The interesting part for ligatures is in the patterns file

So just for the fun of it i'll add {} as shortcut for \zwnj

  \replaceword[more][shiffling] [shiff{}ling]

and this already was there

  \replaceword[more][shiffling] [shiffling]

to prevent messing with something but i'll add an equivalent

  \replaceword[more][shiffling] [{shiffling}]

variant (more explicit). The already existing replacement mechanism is 
good enough for this purpose and if needed we can always ship some lists.

The pop-up appears under Adobe reader for Word/PDF exports, I imagine.
This would not be portable to other readers which is why Hans suggests

  That's not the core part of the package, it just sets a list of
hyphenation exceptions (that's what \hyphenation does).  The main code is
in selnolig.lua.

The interesting part for ligatures is in the patterns file

I have installed ConTeXt standalone version 0.63. i dont know if its beta or 
stable release.

How do i use \arabicdecimals now ? where should i place the code

[NTG-context] 10th ConTeXt users' meeting

Happy New Years¹, fellow ConTeXt users,

The 10th ConTeXt Meeting will take place on September 25-October 1,
2016 at Het Doevehuis in Kalenberg, about 35 km from Hasselt, the
Netherlands. http://meeting.contextgarden.net/2016/

Having been *designated* as a member (and chairman!) of the program
committee, I wish to invite everyone to begin thinking about subjects
that you would like to contribute and/or to see covered.

We will also be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the release of
ConTeXt, and, of course, the 10th anniversary of ConTeXt meetings.
Start planning now in order to make this meeting a big success.

I updated ConTeXt as per your advice to the latest version.

I tried the following code on ConTeXt 0.63 running in AucTeX Spacemacs Editor.

\setupheadertexts
   [{\righttoleft\getmarking[chapter]}][{\arabicdecimals\pagenumber}]
   [{\arabicdecimals\pagenumber}]
[{\righttoleft\getmarking[chapter]}]


This time it worked perfectly.

Thanks, Wolfgang!  This does work indeed.  I had actually tried it before
but made a mistake which made it useless.

What commands accept this kind of setup?  Do the headers and footers accept
such a thing?  How much overhead does this cause?

Is it possible to run the bidi code on a small string? Is there a macro
like \applybidi{some-text-to-apply-bidi-algorithm-on}?
