[NTG-context] fighting fonts

2013-10-09 Thread Ciro A. Soto
Hi everyone,
I am trying to reproduce a novel I wrote with context years ago. This time
is spanish.
I use context only for books, not daily, so now I can't figure out how to
use fonts.
I have been going around and around for days avoiding to look for help here
for such a simple thing, but I surrendered. My last attempt was using the
simplefonts module.
Here is what I get (linux-64 ubuntu):

* texexec --pdf novel.tex*

I was using \parshape in plain tex, but this is what I want to avoid using.
I am looking for a macro where I could provide a figure (may be in metapost format)

better than the \parshape, which distorts the shape if you change the font size

Based on the number of problems reported here with fonts in TL2004/ConTeXt, and also based on my own experience, I believe someone should investigate this in detail and write a note in the WIKI explaining how to fix the problem. I am guessing that the new tree structure of TL2004 has caused the mess, but I am too novice to figure it out. One of the big-hitters (i.e., Hans friends) should advice, please.

[NTG-context] dictionary for TeX,/ConTeXt

2005-01-15 Thread Ciro A. Soto
Hello,
I would like to know what is the best way to
check spelling in a TeX-prepared document.
I could use ispell (linux/unix), but I wonder
if there is a better way with OpenOffice, or
other package. Besides, ispell wouldn't check
my spanish words like Am\'erica because of the
accent.

In the same lines, is there any grammar checker?

Re: [NTG-context] help - spine centered figure

2005-01-29 Thread Ciro A. Soto

Kirschenbaum.
A book I recommend for any person interested in
book design, typography, history, reading, fonts, etc.

 Hello all,

I am reading a beautifully designed book called
'Boodbye Gutenberg, and it gave me inspiration to
change the design of my self-published novel.
 However,
I wonder if with my limited knowledge in Contet I
 can
make it happen. Here it is:

Version 1: The text is standard, justified both
 sides.

When the reader opens the book I want him/her to see
 a
background light-gray picture centered in the spine
 of
the book from the top of the page to the bottom.
 (The
picture is a guitar with the strings along the
 spine),
I would like half of the guitar in the left page,
 and
half in the other page. In other words,
there would be a bleeding picture to the right of
 the
left page, and a bleeding picture to the left of the
right page. The text would be black, and the guitar
would be seen as background. I know it is difficult
 to
follow my explanation, but I hope you understand.

Version 2: The text is wrapped around the figure,
 that
is, each line in the left page is left justified,
 but
ends at the border of the picture. And each line in
the right page is right justified, but begins at the
 border of the picture.

I am hoping to get the version 1. The other version
is like an exercise for me, to see how it would be
 done.

I have tried with layers for the background picture,
and it works, but I don't know how to tell Context
 to
use alternative pictures, one for the left pages,
another for the right pages. My apologies for the
 length ...

 thank you

[NTG-context] texsync - help

2005-02-15 Thread Ciro A. Soto
I just discover the existance of texsync by browsing
the manuals.
I tried to update the manuals and it worked fine in a
$HOME/tmp directory.

I am kind of skeptical in updating the whole context
installation because I don't know the proper
destination option.

I installed tex using texlive2004, and it created a
directory /usr/local/texlive2004/ in my Fedora3
linux.

I wonder if the following command would do
the job wihout harm:

texsync --full --update --force
--destination=/usr/local/texlive2004

and what else should I do afterward.

[NTG-context] looking for a grammar checker in linux/tex/context - or alternative

2005-02-18 Thread Ciro A. Soto
Some time ago I asked for a speller in linux.
I found that aspell does a good job. Now I want
one step up: a grammar checker. Since there is
no such thing in linux (AFAIK), then
my question is:
Is there any
way to ask context to output the file in a format
importable by MS Office? (sorry, I don't like this
solution, but if you have one within the realm of
linux/gnu licenses, let me know). May be plain 'text'
format, or rtf? So I can use the grammar in MS.

I listen to any other idea...

[NTG-context] lack of hyphenation

2005-02-26 Thread Ciro A. Soto
The knowlegeable John Culleton said in one of the
lists that he could recognize if a book was typeset
with
MS-word by looking at the rivers and the lack of
hyphenation. I then checked my 310-page book I am
typesetting with context and not a single line had a
hyphenated word at the end.

So, my question is: Is it okay? or do I need to set
any parameter to allow hyphenation?
I do have
\tolerance=1, because I don't like lines longer
than the rest, but I thought I could still get some
hyphenated words. Am I right?

thank you

 Hi everyone,
I am trying to reproduce a novel I wrote with context years ago. This
 time is spanish.
I use context only for books, not daily, so now I can't figure out how
 to use fonts.
I have been going around and around for days avoiding to look for help
here for such a simple thing, but I surrendered. My last attempt was
 using the simplefonts module.
Here is what I get (linux-64 ubuntu):

 * texexec --pdf novel.tex*

you mix up old an new (mkii an dmkiv)

 run this:

  context novel.tex
