Last time I was at the ConTeXt conference, a few years back, there was talk 
about "monetization" of ConTeXt.  In other words, using ConTeXt to generate 
revenue.  I was wondering if this is still on the agenda.  Perhaps we could 
have a discussion on how to achieve this.  I have one possible idea but I would 
need some feedback from the more experienced members to ascertain its viability.

From my part:

I will show off the novel that I’m sending to the printshop tomorrow. Typeset 
with extreme HZ...
A first run of these 332 pages needed just 33s on my old Mac – ConTeXt LMTX is 
fast! (In comparison: a first latexmk run of my short DTK article about the 
ConTeXt meeting, using the DTK LaTeX class, needed more than a minute. My 
ConTeXt book though, now at 298 pages and using *all* the features, needs ~8 
min for a first run.)

Also, I’m playing with different SyncTeX parsers for a LaTeX project, maybe 
there’s something to show/discuss next week. (SyncTeX *is* convenient with 
bigger projects! Using MuPDF lib, it should even be possible to combine SyncTeX 
information with PDF annotations to get corrections from PDF into ConTeXt 
sources...)


[Howto]
* No special software installation required; most modern browsers should work 
(WebRTC required).
* Open the above URL, accept the privacy statement,
* enter your name,
* click "join" (or "start" if you’re the first),
* click "with microphone", allow your browser to access it, check the audio.
(Some strings might be different, I see the German interface, you should get 
the main language of your browser.)
* Your microphone is muted if you join. Activate microphone and/or camera with 
the buttons at the bottom.
* Minimize the default presentation with the "screen" button, bottom right.

* If you’d like to share your screen or upload a file, you can make yourself 
the presenter: Click on your user name, change the setting, then you’ll see the 
"screen sharing" button beside the camera button; also there’s now "manage 
presentations" behind the "plus" button. Beware there is only one presenter, so 
don’t kill someone else’s presentation.

[Technical hints]
* Sound is usually better if you use a headset (less noise for everyone).

* Connection problems are mostly due to low bandwidth or high latency on your 
side, e.g. with mobile connections.
* If audio/video doesn’t work for you, you can still use the text chat.
* Screen sharing needs a lot of bandwidth.

* You can also join with a regular telephone (audio only, of course), call 
+49-6151-86275-22 (German landline); then you must enter a PIN that changes 
every time – if you need it, ask me for it via email. Mute/unmute your 
microphone with "0".

[Netiquette]
* Please use a name that we recognize from here. Some feel uncomfortable with 
anonymous lurkers.
* Mute your microphone while you’re not talking.
* It’s nice to show your face at least when you join.
* If there are connection problems, stop camera sharing.
* The room is set to “everyone’s a moderator“, I trust you...

[NTG-context] Footnotes in columns

I can no longer print the footnotes when I using columns in LTMX.  If I
remove the \{start|stop}columns, it works fine.  This works on my old MKIV
2018.07.02 14:39 version.

Thank you.  It has been a few years since I have done an installation.  I think 
the old installation instructions either installed the modules by default or 
guided me to do so (as I do not remember installing them) whereas the new one 
does not.

I followed the Module installation instructions of LTMX 
(https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Modules) and it is now working.  The only 
difficulty I had is that Windows does not come with "rsync" so I had to run it 
from Linux and then copy it across manually to my PC before running install.bat.

tells us ConTeXt isn't able to load/find a module with the requested name.


Are you sure the module is installed on your system? Is it possible your 
previous example works because the module is in the same folder as the file for 
the document.

Can you show your log-file because the fancybreak module on the wiki provides 
the \setupfancybreak command.

Hmm... That did not work for me.  The example on the garden
(https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Command/setupfancybreak) is not working
either.  I get a "tex error   > tex error on line 2 in file ./mwe.tex:

I put braces around the contents of the items to make them consistent with
\starthead command which does not seem to contain the headstyle setting in
\startitemize to the head block.

1. There is a space between the columns which has to taken into account when
you set the width of the columns, in your example your tables has a width of
textwidth plus the distance between the columns.

2. \textwidth doesn’t in the argument for the items but you can use the
\localhsize length to get the current width of the text block.

3. You can let ConTeXt calculate the width of the second column which saves
you from guessing the needed value for the column width.

4. You don’t need braces around the content for the items.

[NTG-context] Setting tabulate table width with \textwidth inside an item group

I have a tabulate table inside an indented item group and I would like to
set the width of the table to the \hbox size of the surrounding text.  If I
use \textwidth as a width parameter, the table spills into the right margin
(see attached).

 

What is the correct parameter to use to set the width of the table to the
width of the text in the item group?

Thanks Wolfgang.  The problem I had with using headers was maintaining the
numbers for the headings and clauses.  I was able to solve this with the
[prefix=yes] option for the itemizegroup.

Here is a solution (for anyone else) that achieves what I want:

The best solution is to use real headers and drop the enumerations.

You can hide disable parts (e.g. the chapter number) of the section counter
to get the same results as you have with your current solution.

- it's a legal document where \items are clauses.  I would like to put level
one of the enumeration in a table of contents.

 

I have read the available documentation but I am not clear whether I should
make level one headers, whether I can utilise the \starthead in
\startitemize or whether I can create a list from the level one headings to
create the table of contents.

 

How is best to tackle this problem?

Maybe this should be a language specific parameter.  How would you achieve a
similar result with the Indian numbering system
 , for instance?

 

Also, decimal and thousands separators vary from country to country.  In
France, for example, they use the comma for the decimal separator, and space
for the thousand separator.

The design is new, interesting and refreshing but being a traditionalist, I 
can't help think that it steps a little too far away from its TeX roots.  
ConTeXt is a derivation of TeX, a creation of Donald Knuth.  Here is what he 
said about the logo for TeX:

  "English words like 'technology' stem from a Greek root beginning with the 
letters τεχ...; and this same Greek word means art as well as technology.  
Hence the name TeX, which is an uppercase for of τεχ."

And:

  "... it's important to notice another thing about TeX's name: The 'E' is out 
of kilter. This displaced 'E' is a reminder that TeX is about typesetting, and 
it distinguishes TeX from other system names."

The new design loses this characteristic and therefore does not distinguish it 
"from other system names".  The same could be said for the unofficial logo on 
wiki.

Personally, I think the ConTeXt logo should maintain the link with TeX and its 
design principles.  After all, that is how ConTeXt derived its name and 
functionality.  But this is just my opinion!

I made this logo in February 2018. At the time, I was planning to do some video 
tutorials on ConTeXt (still work in progress), and I wanted a nice looking 
visual clue for the thumbnails. Recently, I made a few minor tweaks and thought 
it would be the right time to put it out there.

The logo comes in two different layouts (hexagonal and horizontal), and each 
layout comes in two color variations (multicolored and blue).

The hexagonal layout is borrowed from the unofficial ConTeXt logo that has been 
around for some time. I like the idea of a clean geometrical form, and the 
hexagon reminds me of chemistry formulas -- one of the many application fields 
of ConTeXt.

The seven colors have mainly an esthetic purpose. They also denote the 
flexibility of ConTeXt. I've added a monochromatic blue version because shiny, 
saturated colors are not suitable for every case, and blue is strongly 
associated with ConTeXt to me. Blue is also a reminder of Mark IV and LuaTeX.

The letters are set in Din17 EF, which I've licensed. I like its simple shapes 
combined with a round and soft touch. It avoids consciously the very connoted 
Computer Modern and can be seen as a modernized and also Europeanized 
interpretation of the TeX tradition.

This logo is just a humble proposal. Perhaps it is of some use to someone. It 
could also make someone else want to create and share his or her logo -- that 
would be great.

I'm using ConTeXt since 2006/07 for almost everything that contains text: 
letters, presentations, invitations, résumés, certificates, manuals, reports, 
flyers, university papers, book typesetting, exercise sheets, song sheets, and 
I'm still amazed by how powerful, flexible and reliable it is. Thanks to the 
whole community -- and particularly to the Dutch wizard -- for making this 
possible!

Garden Wiki.  The short answer is: no, not yet.  Are you planning a 
single-user or system-wide installation?  Do you plan to use SciTE or 
some other editor?  Are you using CygWin?  Send me the errors and some

This is very insightful.  I am not a professional typographer but to my eye,
the problem is really with the period.  It should really be treated as a
modification to the previous character rather than a separate full-stop
character.  This way the spacing would work as designed.

You can disable the bigger space at the end of a sentence with the spacing
key from \setuplanguage but as you can see from the example below ~ creates
a normal space.

[NTG-context] Estonian language support

I am clear whether Estonian (language code: et) is supported in ConTeXt.
According to the manual ("languages-mkiv.pdf"), I should be able to see the
installed languages using \showinstalledlanguages.  Unfortunately, it does
not seem to produce the desired table.

 

However, a scan through the source code shows existence of
'./texmf-context/tex/context/patterns/mkiv/lang-et.lua' file.  It looks like
much of the work, such as hyphenation, has been already done.

 

MWE 1:

\usemodule[languages-system]

\loadinstalledlanguages

\showinstalledlanguages

 

MWE 2:

\starttext

\language[et]

\currentlanguage

\stoptext

 

I suppose my question is more general: what information does the user need
to provide in order for a language to get support in ConTeXt?  The manual
states "More languages can be defined. It is up to users to provide the
information."
