One example is too limited -- very user has different projects in
mind. I remember the quote from someone at Adobe after they
saw some ConTeXt documents we didn't know you could do that
with PDF.
I find this important for promotion of ConTeXt to new users.
The question is: does anyone have any good ideas what to put there?
I used to send people who wanted to find out what ConTeXt can do
to http://www.pragma-ade.com/showcase.pdf, but it doesn't work
for me on linux, only windows (the Mac here isn't on the network).

That would be *really* helpful in order to assess how much work would be required, and also to learn how exactly it's done in practice. Have a look at http://pragma-ade.com/showcase.pdf. If you can find a sufficiently insecure system (the Windows XP system at my work qualifies) you will be able to browse into the sample documents. I think the Magazines entry deals with complex layouts. I'm involved with a scientific report series. We hired a professional who did the initial design in Pagemaker. We then implemented this in ConTeXt, mostly for the maths support, but the page layout was superior too. The implementation was a big job, but the professional did a lot of the work and was very pleased at the quality of the result. It was not as hard as writing the LaTeX style we now use (because authors already use LaTeX for journal articles but found it difficult to get context working). For projects that don't need maths we tend to use In Design or other commercial tools, partly because printers understandably don't like dealing with unknown software. It takes some time to train the printers to trust ConTeXt or LaTeX produced documents, and then the company goes under or is bought out by a bigger company and you have to start over. -- George N. It is hard to say without more information. You appear to have a /etc/texmf/web2c/pdftex directory. I suspect this directory was created erroneously when making formats, in which case it would contain .fmt and .log files. This may mean that one of the tools used to generate formats has a bug -- perhaps only triggered when run using the root account, which is usually disabled on ubuntu, but this is only conjecture. If you have current hardware with ample disk and RAM you could probably sort out the problem by installing a fresh Ubuntu in a VM, repeating the steps you took to get into this unhappy state but checking after each step to figure out exactly when the configuration goes astray. You can also experiment with various repair strategies to see what works before trying to repair your main installation. I actually tried this, and was not able to cause context to fail. Using sudo luatools --generate results in cache files that are owned by root but still readable by a regular user. Running luatools, fmtutil, etc. from root still didn't produce /etc/texmf/web2c/pdftex so I'm at a loss to figure out how that could happen. It would be nice to know how it happened so steps can be taken to prevent others from ending up in the same predicament. -- George N. I use MKIV on Ubuntu 10.04 amd64, but from TeX Live 2010-pretest installed using the CTAN installer, not from .deb packages. A CTAN install can co-exist with a package install as long as you don't let the installer create symbolic links, so you can install TeX Live 2010-pretest without damage to the Ubuntu packages. If you have good network access to one of the pretest archive sites then installing TeX Live 2010-pretest may be your best route as you get newer versions of luatex, etc. Many people have much better network access to Ubuntu archives than they do to CTAN, in which case the Ubuntu packages may be the only viable option. For more debugging, follow the checks for versions, shadowing, etc. from http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Debian_installation, in particular, the Postscript: Mark IV section, which does mention running luatools --generate as well as manually creating cont-en.fmt. The next step is to run the checks from the wiki's Debian page

Did you have any previous TeX or ConTeXT installed on this system -- a
common
source of problems is intermingling multiple TeX systems (as opposed to
keeping
each one in a separate tree, which allows you to switch between a number
of
different systems). Once you have verified that the right files are
found you
may want to file a bug report against the Ubuntu package.

When you follow an existing process you benefit from the efforts of those who have gone before, but when you do things in a new way you may find that your efforts get more rigorous scrutiny. I have heard of cases where some of the institution's rules for thesis formats are not enforced because it is too hard to do that using MS Word, but the same exceptions are not granted to TeX users. ConTeXt has been used, but different institutions have different rules and expectations. At many institutions there is already a LaTeX thesis style ready to go, but I have heard of problems when these were used outside science, e.g, because the science people don't use footnotes the same way as for other fields. FInd out if LaTeX is used at your institution (even if you choose ConTeXt, the LaTeX style can serve to document fonts and other details. Find out who enforces the institution's standards and discuss your plans with them -- they may be able to help you identify particular trouble spots in advance so you can get more specific help/advice while there is time to change plans. Your script is clever, but in my experience, you can simplify the process. I
have a TeXLive install and the ConTeXt minimals on my OS X box. In order to

I simply run source ~/.minicontext, and my system is set up. The syntax is
for zsh; if you're running bash or (heaven forbid!) tcsh, you may have to
adapt it slightly; and of course, adapt the path variables to your own
needs.
There is a tool designed specifically for this sort of adjustment to
the environment,
called environment modules:

This was standard kit on SGI Irix -- now that we are replacing the SGI
workstations with
MacOSX at work I use the (experimental) tcl version.The big

I get the same error using TL2008 on linux, so it looks like a bug in
context. All is not lost, however, as your file does work using MKiV
with the context minimal distro:

So the solution lies somewhere between 2008.05 MkII and 2008.08 MkIV.

You can then select the version you want by adjusting the PATH variable. On *X I recommend the environment modules tools to manage your PATH. This is available in some linux distros, and comes with SGI Irix. Another approach that works on WIn32 and *x is to write a script that sets the path and loads a shell. Then you can use that for command-line processing, or start emacs from the command-line to use AUCTeX. 3. formats and configs may end up in $HOME/.texlive, which is OK if you are using only one install for a given year, but can cause problems if you end up with two installs for the same TL version. The solution is to make sure you use the tool-sys versions to put configs and formats into the system directories. -- George N. Note that this should have symbolic links to the scripts in the texmf-ctx tree to ensure that the current scripts are used. 3. copy the updated binaries to the bin/i386-linux-l directory What about trying to install TeX Live 2008? It desperately needs testers at the moment, and all that you will need to do to stay up to date is fetching: - luatex - context itself - maybe luatool mtxrun Once I copy thse binaries to my TeXLive binary directory, what's the next step? Do I need to rebuild the ConTeXt format, for example? Yes. It is important to catch as many problems in TL2008 as we can now, and it is intended to have a current ConTeXt. I think MiKTeX should remain focusing on the packages and binaries, and rely on upstream to fix broken packages. I agree. EndNote is really designed for individual users, although sold in bulk. If 2 people open the same database on a shared drive they end up with a corrupt database. In my view, a bibliographic database needs to store each reference in the source or original format, whether bibtex, refer, or one of the newer forms, and provide translators and version tracking, so each file can have forks for different uses (e.g., ascii vs unicode char. sets) and edits can be preserved for the next user. In practice, people just dump selected refs to a bib file, make the .bbl file, and fix problems there, so fixes rarely make it back to the master database. If they did, we would still have accents and quote marks being switched back and forth depending on who last used the entry. -- George N. [NTG-context] luatex on debian
debian (unstable,testing?) users can get a snapshot release of luatex in
apt package form.
This works for me, but there are a few things that needed slight adjustment, so
I wanted to report them here to encourage others to start testing it.
I needed to set TEXMF=/etc/texmf. Luatools doesn't seem to handle the {..}
in the variables that are combined in TEXMF. Also, when it didn't find
AlProTex.sty, the message indicated that it couldn't find AlProTeX.sty
('x'--'X')!
For testing, you can just set some simplified TEXMF, e.g.,:
export
TEXMF={$HOME/texmf,/usr/local/texmf,/usr/share/texmf-texlive,/usr/share/texmf}
or you can edit /etc/texmf/texmf.d/05TeXMF.cnf to simplify things like:

In my case, I no longer have texmf-textex, so this became just
TEXMFDIST = /usr/share/texmf-texlive
Then run: update-texmf and luatools --generate
You can check the TEXMF variable with:

Are you using the current version of gs? There have been changes
to the font rendering over the years, so you want to try a current
version.
A quick way to get a second opinion is to install the emacs+auctex
bundle for Win32 to see how you like the preview images.
What does not so good mean -- there are lots of parameters to
adjust anti-aliasing, color models, and resolution with gs, but I'm not sure
about things like gamma. ImageMagick's convert may provide an
easier interface. If you are using pk fonts you may encounter problems
if the fonts resolution isn't compatible with the output resolution.
Then I read dvipng could do the job, which means I have to produce dvi
output via texexec --dvi but than I get complaints from dvips that it
cannot find the file tex.pro for the specials. However a png file is
produced.
Help appreciated
In the long run, using pdf has the advantage that the tools are supported
by a much wider community than the small set of people who have heard of
.dvi format. The number of people who would be affected by a problem in
gs rendering is orders of magnitude larger than the number who would
notice a problem with dvipng. The latter group can always switch to pdf and
gs, while the former group doesn't have viable alternatives. As a result,
assuming the problem is not related to TeX-specific font formats, it is very
likely that gs can do what you need today and that future version on future
platforms will also work.
If you are still having problems, provide a minimal example (.tex
source and .png
image) along with the software versions so others can try to reproduce
the problem.

ConTeXt often needs little fixes, so a simple way to install updates and generate new efmt files is needed. Thus it isn't really practical to rely entirely on a CD-based distro, and in any case, you need something other than ram to write the output files. You will do better to stick with a robust distro like knoppix and find a way to use ConTeXt. XP users can have texmf trees in their hard disk user data area that knoppix can read, but writing to NTFS seems a bit dodgy. Knoppix does, however, include everything you need to create user accounts with specific UID/GID and mount NFS directories, so if you can arrange a suitable NFS server, everything can live there. All this can be done using knoppix.sh to start the necesary services and unpack a new home directory from a user.tbz file. You will need to save a configs.tbz after adding the required group and user passwd entry (vigp, adduser, vipw, etc) and creating an fstab entry for the nfs mount. I reported the above problem with the TL2003 pre-release tests. Using the current cont-tmf.zip gets you a TeXExec 4.0 that seems more robust, but that could be because I also abandoned a configuration that puts spaces in the paths (e.g., install to C:\TeXLive and set HOME=C:\Home). One system (Win98) had problems with forward slashes in the argument to perl's backtick, but then the hard disk failed and I've been waiting since Sept. for the warranty replacement to arrive. TeX Live 2003 texexec seems to be hard on PC's -- maybe because when kpathsea fails texexec.pl recursively searches the drive for the ini file. In any case, after the 1st PC died I tried to install TL2003 on another machine which also failed (terminal overheating) while creating formats after installing the fpTeX updates. Maybe cheap PC clones can't tolerate ls-R too many times in a short time period. btw -- before the machine died I did notice that the new version of fpTeX has a 1.11b pdftex. I've been asked to put TL2003 on a ThinkPad running XP -- hope it survives the experience! -- George N. The perl scripts have not changed. Earlier, when TeXLive 2003 was still in beta they left out texexec altogether. On unix they just forgot to make some symlinks, the perl scripts were there. On Win32, I used Active State perl.exe to run the scripts. Has anyone else tried Context using graphics on TeXLive 2003? I hate to report a bug to Tug if my experience is unique. OTOH if the iso image is defective in some way I do need to let someone know pronto. I'm not sure about the demo image. Maybe I am wrong but I am beginning to find this extremely frustrating (7 months). Once I realised that somebody was working on texfont 1.8 I had hoped for a fix. On all the systems I use, (linux, SGI Irix, Win32 with texLive) you have to run texfont to generate tfm's, vf's and map files for fonts other than CM. The last time I tried to run texfont (from the final TeX Live 2003 inst iso), it tried to use a lower-cased version of the install path, e.g., /opt/texline instead of /opt/texLive. If no developer/Perl expert has Gerbens version of tetex perhaps I could help debug if a version was supplied to me that printed out the full path that texfont was looking for files in. The --fontroot option or kpsewhich lookup appears to be at fault but I have no debugging facilities. Any suggestions (other than giving up) gratefully received.
