As for MKII/pdfTeX1, it makes no sense making a book for a stalled branch;
debian users will continue to use pdfTeX1 for at least 10 years, I fear. :-)

How do I preflight the document and where is the latest pdftex? (Is
it not in the latest ConTeXt?)
Get the last TeX Live (http://www.tug.org/tex-live/); the ConTeXt in
it is quite recent.

Has anyone done anything more on this? Is there some magic
--enable-commenting switch that I can't see?
I doubt it.

This seem to be fixed with 1.40.3 release of pdftex .
This _is_ fixed and the only reason for 1.40.3. :-}

2007/1/13, Sanjoy Mahajan [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
xpdf is fast but it won't watch the file. As far as I know, the only
pdf viewer that watches the file, at least on Linux, is gv
(ghostscript). If you find another, let me know.
As I already wrote: kpdf. Check out evince, if you are using gnome.

It does not seem to have any observable impact on the typeset product
however.
I think it can be safely ignored. All the features in PDF 1.6 1.7
should be handled by pdftex's pdf inclusion.

Only when texdoc presents me with a dvi. :-)
I tend to use kpdf more than AR now; it's faster and watches files.

Maybe I missing a trick, but the draftmode didn't save much time. I
guess I should make the test file read in a few huge images?
Yes. And if you then generate PDF 1.5 with object stream and
compression, you can gain much. I have a test case which

There is such a command in pdfTeX-1.40 but I don't remember the name
(I think it's \ifshellescape).
It's new in 1.30:
- \pdfshellescape is a read-only integer that is 1 if \write18 is enabled, 0
otherwise.
