[NTG-context] Blank line after \item: MkIV vs LMTX and how to properly get rid of it
Hello. Consider the following small example: 8< -- \starttext \startitemize[n] \item \input tufte \item \placefigure[right,none]{}{\externalfigure[cow]}% \input tufte \item \blank[overlay]% \placefigure[right,none]{}{\externalfigure[cow]}% \input tufte \stopitemize \startitemize[n,intext] \item \input tufte \item \placefigure[right,none]{}{\externalfigure[cow]}% \input tufte \item \blank[overlay]% \placefigure[right,none]{}{\externalfigure[cow]}% \input tufte \stopitemize \stoptext 8< -- I see a difference in MkIV and LMTX work: - MkIV always put a blank line despite '\blank[overlay]' command; - with \blank[overlay] and 'intext' option LMTX clutters item label (number in this case). Q1: is this the expected behavior for MkIV and LMTX? I found a recipe with \blank[overlay] in the mailing list. Q2: is it expected that LMTX will clutter item label when I use \blank[overlay]? I suspect the answer is "yes" due to the option name. Q3: how to prevent blank line insertion in such case: an item with text framing a picture (on right side or on left side but the picture is below the item label)? --- WBR, Vladimir Lomov -- Without freedom of choice there is no creativity. -- Kirk, "The return of the Archons", stardate 3157.4 signature.asc Description: PGP signature ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://context.aanhet.net archive : https://bitbucket.org/phg/context-mirror/commits/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___

Re: [NTG-context] How do I add cyrillic to my typescript/document?
m than ConTeXt one but I don't use ConTeXt as often as LaTeX. If I understand correctly, fallback mechanism allows to use some "main" font for most of letters in a document, for example, for Latin letters and use another font, if some letters are missing from "main" one. The "missing" is based on letters codes, see "range" above. Your original question is a bit unclear to me. Do you want typeset document with Cyrillic letters, for example Russian text or just want to include some words using Cyrillic (Russian) letters? The former assumes that you will use \mainlanguage[ru] and appropriate font with Cyrillic glyphs, while for the latter you need only the font. I'm not a Mac OS user neither I have Optima nor Helvetica fonts, but Computer Modern Unicode (OTF) and OldStandard (OTF) have both Cyrillic and Latin letters (OldStandard doesn't have support "out of box" in context while Computer Modern Unicode has) so I made two small examples (well, the first example not so small, sometimes I prepare example not only for others but for myself too) which show both uses. Both fonts can be found on ctan: https://ctan.org/pkg/cm-unicode and https://ctan.org/pkg/oldstandard. > G --- WBR, Vladimir Lomov -- Girls marry for love. The 'cons' function that you use allows to add only one element to a list (see Emacs Lisp documentation). I'm not familiar very well with Emacs Lisp but tested a bit and think this should work: 8< (eval-after-load "context" '(setq TeX-command-list (append '( ("ConTeXt" "PATH=...:$PATH context --purgeall %s" TeX-run-command nil t :help "Run context (MarkIV)") ("LMTX""PATH=...:$PATH context --purgeall %s" TeX-run-command t t :help "Run context (LMTX)") ) TeX-command-list ) ) ) 8< I'm not absolutely sure about 'TeX-run-command' (code of AUCTeX uses 'TeX-run-TeX' for TeX stuff). You may test and use 'TeX-run-TeX' instead of 'TeX-run-command'. Also you may change the 'nil t' to 't (context-mode)' if you what to edit (expanded) string and only want to see these entries for buffers set in 'context' mode. The above lines do opposite: they append path to context binary to the end of PATH list. The first line, 'source ...', helps here because 'setuptex' in turns prepend path to context binary to PATH. When you invoke 'context' in terminal (I assume it is bash shell) the shell searches program in current directory (depends on configuration) and then in PATH, the first wins. So to use context from ConTeXt standalone you may simply do $ export PATH=$HOME/context/tex/texmf-linux-64/bin:$PATH either in terminal or in ~/.profile. You may always check if this is true by runnig $ command -v context (for bash shell) or $ which context Returning to your problem. I looked closely again in messages with output from context and I don't understand what may cause the error. Seems that Emacs uses correct context (according to loading files). As you said you were able to typeset a sample document in terminal, so all settings in terminal (bash I presume) were fine, especially taking into account that 'setuptex' exports only PATH variable with correct path for Standalone ConTeXt. They might change environment from which Emacs is launched but again, you use full path to run context so they must be irrelevant here. In one of previous messages (https://www.mail-archive.com/ntg-context@ntg.nl/msg88742.html) you told that you use Archlinux, did you install texlive-* packages? Did you update your system? I use Archlinux and have not only ConTeXt standalone/suite and TeX Live (TUG) installed but also I have installed texlive-* packages from distribution repository and don't have any problem with the example either in terminal or Emacs(+AUCTeX), I suspect that your Emacs configuration might be the cause of the problem. > Hi Vladimir, > I just realized that does not work anymore > ! > > (setq ConTeXt-mode-hook > (lambda () (setq TeX-command-extra-options "--purgeall"))) Why you insist on using hooks when you specify in full the custom target? I'm not talking about ordinary modular programming carefulness here. No. Programming an imbedded system calls for undiluted raging maniacal paranoia. For example, our ethernet front ends need to know what network number they are on so that they can address and route PUPs properly. How do you find out what your network number is? Easy, you ask a gateway. Gateways are required by definition to know their correct network numbers. Once you've got your network number, you start using it and before you can blink you've got it wired into fifteen different sockets spread all over creation. [NTG-context] Problem with Russian letters in itemize
Hello, I'm trying to use Russian (Cyrillic) letters for itemize list but without luck. This is small example to show a problem: -- 8< - \mainlanguage[ru] \setupbodyfont[cambria] % \setupbodyfont[computer-modern-unicode] % \setupbodyfont[dejavu] \starttext \startitemize[a] \item первый \item второй \stopitemize \stoptext -- 8< - Compilation (typesetting) of the example by context (curr. ver. 2017.01.27) gives a PDF file with Latin letters. According to 'language-mkiv.pdf' (found in texmf-context/doc/context/documents/general/manuals) The \type{alphabetic} converter adapts to the current main language. When a language has no special alphabet, the regular 26 characters are used. the use of Latin letters is expected behaviour if current language has not special alphabet. But Russian alphabet (based on Cyrillic) has differences with Latin one. Did I face a bug or I misunderstand the documentation and I have to use (add?) another command to obtain Russian letters for item? Also, it is possible that I incorrectly use 'setupbodyfont' but I tested all cases shown above and they work fine, expect the fact that 'cambria' case gives me italic variant of font while 'computer-modern-unicode' and 'dejavu' use "roman" font. I think it is related to MKIV (or more precisely to the fontloader). It is a bit difficult to demonstrate it with context (how to you use luatex without mkiv there?) but latex (or plain) it is quite easy: The followings examples load pplr7t.vf. Both give the checksum mismatch message in the log if and only if the lua-fontloader luaotfload it also loaded: %LaTeX \documentclass{article} \usepackage{luaotfload} \begin{document} \font\test=pplr7t \test abc \end{document} %plain \input luaotfload.sty \font\test=pplr7t \test abc \bye So the code from luaotfload (which is based on the context fontloader code) changes a checksum (either in the vf or in the tfm-information) and so the check in the luatex engines fails. (Imho it is only a minor problem, vf-fonts are not much used with luatex). Afaik nothing is done with a checksum. There is a checksum field in the loaded tfm but I don't think one has to be passed to luatex. Maybe one should be passed when a regular tfm file is used but even then, loading a vf file is independent. So, it's best to just ignore that message. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this how I understand TFM font and currect state of tex engines (actually pdftex, xetex and luatex): 1. to use any font in tex one need a TFM file (file name = fontname.TFM), that file actually contain informationabout font, not how exatly glyphs are constructed; 2. when [original] tex read a document file it searches for TFM and VF files, read them and write DVI file with information about that files; 3. after that user can send file to printer or publisher to print it on printer. As I understand the purpose of checksum was to be sure that publisher or printer would use exatly the same fonts as user. If user converts DVI file to PS/PDF one on his/she computer using dvips or dvipdfm* the checksum mostly useless, assuming files are not corrupted. Nowadays pdftex, xetex and luatex are widely used and most time users generate PDF files on the same computer they write documents, send PDF files which have they own mechanism to check font consistency. But still there are [plenty] DVI files around, as well as luatex engine might generate DVI file. The convertion to PS/PDF is performed by dvips/dvipdfm* programs, that's ok. But what about luatex with DVI output? My conclusion: 1. if PDF output is only interesting then it is Ok, ignore that message, because font information is already in PDF and PDF programs should deal with it; 2. if DVI output is concerned then luatex _must_ be consistent with pdftex (also can write DVI files), which, imho (don't check), takes care about both TFM and VF checksums. --- WBR, Vladimir Lomov -- The happiest time of a person's life is after his first divorce. -- J.K. Re: [NTG-context] Proposal for math mappings
Hi. ** Aditya Mahajan [2010-12-09 23:49:26 -0500]: This is a proposal for a new way of selecting math mappings in MkIV. I want to get input from other math users whether this syntax would take care of all scenarios or not. There are five different ranges in mathematics: - digits (0..9) - lower case Latin (abc..z) - upper case Latin (ABC..Z) - lower case Greek (αβγ..ζ) - upper case Greek (ΑΒΓ..Z) Should be: αβγ..ω and ΑΒΓ..Ω A user may want to control what each range is mapped to. So, I suggest a setup command \setupmathmappings [ digits={style, alternative}, lclatin={style, alternative}, uclatin={style, alternative}, lcgreek={style, alternative}, ucgreek={style, alternative}, ] where the options for style are normal, bold while the options for alternative are normal, italic, sans, sansitalic, blackboard, script This command will the mappings for each range. **NOTE**: All combinations are not valid. A companion command \definemathmappings [whatever] [] can be used to define multiple mappings. These mappings can be used by \setupmathmappings[whatever] (An alternative is that these mappings are activated using \whatever ...) For example, we can define a command to typeset vectors using \definemathmappings [vectors] [ digits={bold, normal}, lclatin={bold, normal}, uclatin={bold, normal}, lcgreek={bold, normal}, ucgreek={bold, normal}] \def\VEC{\groupedcommand{\setupmathmappings[vector]}{}} Is it should be \def\VEC{\groupedcommand{\setupmathmappings[vectors]}{}} ? If later, we want to represent vectors as sans serif, we can use \definemathmappings [vectors] [ digits={normal, sans}, lclatin={normal, sans}, uclatin={normal, sans}, lcgreek={normal, sans}, ucgreek={normal, sans}] This interface makes it easy to switch math fonts for disiplines that want different style for different alphabet ranges. It is relatively easy to implement the above interface. All we need is some bookkeeping to set the right attributes. The default math mapping commands can be reimplmeneted using \definemappings. Before implementing this, I want to ask the opinion of other math users. Would the above interface take care of different use cases, or is it missing something? IMHO, style is already used so it is normal. Finally, I am not too happy with the syntax. There are only a few ConTeXt commands in which the keys take a pair of values. Another option is to allow all 12 valid options normal, italic, sans, sansitalic, blackboard, script, bold, bolditlaic, boldsans, boldsansitalic, boldblackboard, boldscript This very depends on used fonts. with the variants sansitalic-italicsans, boldsans-sansbold, etc. as synonmyms. Which way of specifying the keys do you prefer? Aditya Actually I don't get what you try to do. I thought that 'font switching' command should take care of font switching either in math or text modes (if typescript is set properly). Right now the only good example of usage of proposed mechanism is \VEC command (for vectors and etc). --- WBR, Vladimir Lomov. -- I share the belief of many of my contemporaries that the spiritual crisis pervading all spheres of Western industrial society can be remedied only by a change in our world view. Suppose I want to use serif bold italic font for vectors and sans bold italic for tensors (this is recommendation of NIST, see sp811.pdf on nist.gov). Of course I could enter vectors and tensors as symbols from appropriate unicode slots but what if my publisher says me that vectors should be in sans bold and tensors in serif bold italic? So I define commands, like \vect and \tensor to markup what symbols are verctors and what are tensors. Therefore I consider context (as well as LaTeX) as sort of markup (mix of procedural and descriptive markups). Once it is used in bold math mode, it's no more slanted but vertical as normal text. Is there a way how to keep the slantedness even in math bold mode? (This is e.g. often used to mark vectors.) IMHO (I'm not expert in context) this depends on used fonts. No, the symbol is not in the 'standard' math fonts, and this is trouble. Like LaTeX, we also fake the glyph in MkII. In MkIV, we check if the font contains that glyph; if not we fake it. Currently, that test is failing. A temporary workaround (for LM) is to redefine: \def\repeatintegral#1#2#3% {\let\dointlimits\donothing \let\dodointlimits\intlimits %\iffontchar\textfont\zerocount#1\relax % %\edef\dodorepeatintegral{\utfchar{#1}}% % \let\dodorepeatintegral#2% %\else \fakerepeatintegral{#3}% %\fi \futurelet\next\dorepeatintegral} and then \iint \iiint etc will work. Thank you for advice (I had to regenerate format to see the result, because I changed the definition in 'math-int.mkiv') but the result is terrible for inline math and normal for displaystyle. Moreover I found that this solution would give unexpected result if one use \setupmathematics[integral=displaylimits], consider the following example: example name=ex7_1.tex \setupmathematics[integral=displaylimits] \starttext Ordinary integral: $\int_{a}^{b}f(x)\text{d}x=F(b)-F(a)$. Ordinary integral: $\int\limits_{a}^{b}f(x)\text{d}x=F(b)-F(a)$. \startformula \int_{a}^{b}f(x)\text{d}x=F(b)-F(a). \stopformula Double integral: $\iint_{D} f(x,y) dx dy$ Double integral sign (faked symbol) could cause incorrect result: \startformula \iint_{D} f(x,y) \text{d}x \text{d} y \stopformula \stoptext /example (I didn't remember where exactly I found command \setupmathematics.) Hans, do you know what the \textfont check is not working for LM? The ideal solution is to add esint glyphs to the LM math virtual font. I did not work on this because I was assuming that opentype LM math will be out soon. But it seems that right now, the only decent opentype math font is Cambria. Both Stix and Asansa give really horrible spacing at times. IMHO, Cambria looks very odd. Hangaround is a very robust command and works in more cases than \placefigure[left] but you have a conflict with the \item command which place the itemize symbol before the following text which is indented in your case. And even if I use code \startitemize[n,inmargin] /code I got 2 not in margin. Something similar I know about wrapfig package for LaTeX. It could 'wrap' text around figure or table while it couldn't work within list environment (start/stop). Ok, that only means that I don't understand how lists and this 'environment' work. --- WBR, Vladimir Lomov ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : http://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___

Hi. Some answers I found myself :) 2010/10/26 Vladimir Lomov lomov...@gmail.com: Hi. I'm trying to figure out the limitation of \start/stophangaround commands. 1. Is it correct that currently the figure could be placed only on left? If so is it easy to extend the command to allow placing figure at right side? 2. Is there way to increase/decrease the space between the text and image? 3. Is it correct that hangaround command is tricky hack that change normal flow? 2. - \setuphanging[desitance=0.7em], for example. 3. - To make '2.' appear on left side it is enough to put empty line between \item and \starthangaround. IMHO, this is workaround, not solution. P.S. Re: [NTG-context] How to put mark in right margin even for equation [SOLVED]
Hi. 2010/10/29 Vladimir Lomov lomov...@gmail.com: Hi. Please consider the attached example. I want to put a mark (how many points will give the answer on a question) on right margin. I define command '\pointsMark' to do that but it fails if I put it inside \start/stopformula. Could someone give advice how to put such mark on right margin even for equation? I tried to find a bit more information about margins but context manual don't provide details (I'll try later with sources). I also tried to see how to use 'plain' TeX commands for marginal material (I looked to TeX by Topic) but didn't find appropriate section. Meanwhile I clarify for myself what I need from margins: I want to put a text on right margin (like in previous example) but want the text to be aligned to right (all text in right margin should have the same right edge). EDT: I found solution for this: code \setupimnargin[right][align=left] %%% Ok, I thought that align=left it to align to the left edge. /code I tried to find a bit more information about margins but context manual don't provide details Look the source, Luke :D Now the only question is how to put text on right margin within \start/stopformula. But this is matter of taste. P.S. The solution for the problem is much simpler than I use in LaTeX (tricks with lengths). --- WBR, Vladimir Lomov ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : http://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___

[NTG-context] Q about hangaround commands
Hi. I prepare simple example (it is attached). 1) is obvious from the example (default behavior I assume). 3): I got the '2.' not on left side as 1) and 3) but on left side of text block right after image. Another example if 3): if I put empty line between \starthangaround and \input (see the file) then there would be mess. P.S. I tried the example with MkIV only. --- WBR, Vladimir Lomov ex1.tex Description: TeX document ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : http://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___

What should I do to use them? you have to make typescript for them as they are not supported out of the box; we use lm fonts (which are unicode) LM have no Cyrillic, but CM-U have, and I think that is why he wants to use them, and IMHO it deserves including a typescript for it and may be including the fonts in minimals too since there seem not to be any Cyrillic CM fonts there. Yes, exactly. CM-U has Cyrillic while LM not. And I fount 'type-cmu.mkiv' but couldn't get it to work. @Willi: VL Not sure about how 'context --generate'' works but I didn't that. May VL be it doesn't like links? I meant that I ran (several times) 'context --generate' after I made a link to cm-unicode. --- WBR, Vladimir Lomov ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : http://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___
Re: [NTG-context] Computer Modern Unicode fonts
Hi. 2010/9/30 Hans Hagen pra...@wxs.nl: If these are the huge traced cm supers I'd rather not have them in the minimals but as extra as they consume a log of space. No, it's otf fonts. For reference you could see this branch: http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/fonts/cm-unicode/fonts/otf/ If it's just cyrillic .. maybe it's more interesting to use fallbacks, given that we have a cyrillic only variant available for that (there are type ones as we have support for the t2* encodings in mkii). It's not the only way to get Cyrillic as any other language in ConTeXt. Btw, one of the reasons why lm/gyre have no cyrillic (or had cyrilic removed) is that in spit of all efforts to locate people, no one is willing to check them and do some quality control. It has been discussed before: if there is a group of volunteers the glyphs might show up again in the fonts. If I not mistake part of work in cm-super was done by Vladimir Volovich (or whole work?). So, I should ask Wolfgang Schuster (author of type-cmu.mkiv) what could be wrong with the document? May be I do completely wrong with that typescript? Khaled Hosny == KH: KHYou actually need `mtxrun -script fonts --reload` to update font database. I tried.
