Good news, but I would welcome a (speed review) compared to 7.0.8 before
I go through the trouble of installing the package. So, if anybody is
using it and is willing to share some experiences, that would be much
 appreciated.
As first impression, it 's better than 7.0.8.
Installation was clean on Ubuntu 7.04i386, and it looks more clean also.

 Hi Guys,

Just had sometime to update to texlive 2007 from the DVD that was on
the shelf for quite some time.

But as usual, the default postscript fonts don't work.
The warnings are a bit weird. I indeed don't have 8r-urw-times.map.
hmm, perhaps urw fonts are not correctly installed .
If you have pfb+afm, maybe you don't have tfm;
you can use texfont to re-install fonts .
For example, I suppose you have fonts helevetica under urw/helvetic;
to install I do the follow:
1) chose a temp dir , for example /opt/urw/helvetic
2) copy all pfb and afm of helvetica in /opt/urw/helvetic
3) cd /opt/urw
4) texfont --vendor=urw --collection=helvetic --encoding=8r
--sourcepath=helvetic
--install --makepath

 Hi to all,

I' ve started playing with xml -- context.
I've read the docs but even if I am able to do some very basic operation I'm
in troubles doing my first real experiment.

I've already generated a book from the collection of html help files of the
SuperCollider language using a cumbersome python script.
But I was guessing that probably using xml mapping would make my life
 easier.

Indeed, lxml under python is a cool module.
See
http://codespeak.net/lxml/
lxml_in_python implements also full xpath/xslt

An example file to be processed is here:

Please ,if you can, consider luatex+context mkiv; in base folder see
l-xml-edu.lua lxml-ini.lua lxml-ini.tex l-xml.lua
(warning : lxml here has nothing to do with lxml in python, only the same names)
I believe that actually lxml_in_luatex does not implements a full xpath/xslt,
because not always these are useful in this context.

(If I need a full xpath/xslthere here, then I have a too much complex
xml document, and I preprocessing it with lxml_in_python)

With lxml_in_python_ and lxml_in_luatex_
you can solve all ** reasonable ** problems.
Sometimes only lxml_in_python is need, sometimes only lxm_in_luatex, it depends.

So, maybe it's time to think to an official context editor, i mean,

It's no important that all like it, it's important that we have one of valid .

Think to MS-Windows which come with wordpad, or Linux ,which come with Vim .

[NTG-context] [OT]UK TeX FAQ, v3.17, released

2007-11-09 Thread luigi scarso
From
http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?introduction=yes

What is ConTeXt?

ConTeXt is a macro package developed by Hans Hagen of Pragma-Ade. ConTeXt is
a document-production system based, like LaTeX, on the TeX typesetting
system. Whereas LaTeX insulates the writer from typographical details,
ConTeXt takes a complementary approach by providing structured interfaces
for handling typography, including extensive support for colors,
backgrounds, hyperlinks, presentations, figure-text integration, and
conditional compilation. It gives the user extensive control over formatting
while making it easy to create new layouts and styles without learning the
TeX macro language. ConTeXt's unified design avoids the package clashes that
can happen with LaTeX.

ConTeXt also integrates MetaFun, a superset of MetaPost and a powerful
system for vector graphics. MetaFun can be used as a stand-alone system to
produce figures, but its strength lies in enhancing ConTeXt documents with
accurate graphic elements.

ConTeXt allows the users to specify formatting commands in English, Dutch,
German, French, or Italian, and to use different typesetting engines
(PDFTeX, XeTeX, Aleph, and soon LuaTeX) without changing the user interface.
ConTeXt is developed rapidly, often in response to requests from the user
community.

*ConTeXt doesn't yet have quite such a large developer community as does
LaTeX, but those developers who are active seem to have prodigious
energy.*Support is available via a WIKI site and via the mailing list.
*

(my bold-italic)

Thanks, that was simple in the end...

 Now, a real TOC question/problem.

Reading through old posts and docs, I remain unconvinced as to what is
the best solution between creating my own lists or customizing the
standard Alternatives. But even then, is the latter possible?

Yes with \setuplist .
For example I have used this
\def\PartCommand#1#2#3{%
\framed[width=broad,
frame=off,
align={right,lohi}]{\bfd #2\quad#3}}
\setuplist[part]
  [alternative=none,

Should we consider

Better,
should we consider Context 2007.07.25 + pdftex 1.40.5

you can use \dontleavehmode in this case.
yes, i know.

\meaning\ \dontleavehmode
gives
\quitvmode

\meaning\quitvmode
gives
\quitvmode
hence \quitvmode is a primitive .

\quitvmode
The primitive instructs pdfTEX to quit the vertical mode and start
typesetting a paragraph. \quitvmode
has the same effect as \leavevmode definition from plain macro
package. Note however, that
\leavevmode may conflict with \everypar tokens list. No such risk
while using \quitvmode instead
The primitive has been introduced in pdfTEX 1.21a.

You have some really nice stuff on your user page. However,
can you move some of the more useful things to a separate wiki page? (and
link still link them, or include them completely in your user page).
I must admit that I'm starting my user page just as a block notes,
and sadly continue to use it
in the same manner.
Feel free to write your suggestions, i don't see problems to make modifications.

Occasionaly I have wanted to add some more information to something in
your user page, but have not done so thinking that it is rude for me to
 edit your user page.
I think this:
when you think you should modify/add something in my page, do it.
Eventually later I re-organize content, if necessary.

Re: [NTG-context] line breaking hints?

2007-11-27 Thread luigi scarso

 Hello,

I'm looking for a way to give ConTeXt's line breaking algorithm a hint on
where it is allowed to break a line. For example, I want ConTeXt to break
lines, if necessary, when it encounters '//' in a string. I don't want to
force a line break there, but if context needs to break the line, I want it
 to be after a //.

A contrived example of some input text is:
THE QUICK BROWN FOX JUMPED OVER THE LAZY DOG//NOW IS THE TIME FOR ALL GOOD
MEN TO COME TO THE AID OF THEIR COUNTRY.

When this text is rendered by ConTeXt, and it is too big to fit on a single
line, I would like it to break like this:
THE QUICK BROWN FOX JUMPED OVER THE LAZY DOG//
NOW IS THE TIME FOR ALL GOOD MEN TO COME TO THE AID OF THEIR COUNTRY.

I can preprocess the source to change spaces into non-breaking spaces and
can replace '//' with anything else that I need to, but don't know how to
suggest where to break the line. Also note that I do not want any words to
be hyphenated nor broken on hyphens.

maybe this can give you more ideas

yes, search in wiki for \startmode \stopmode

 (2) Is it possible to convert context into plain text
hmm, with a bit of discipline, yes.
But you can also explore pdftotext (make pdf = convert to text)
or use \write macros of TeX
or try luatex.

\dontleavehmode
is
 \dontleavehmode=\quitvmode.
and \quitvmode is a primitive
stricly speacking we don't see a space, but a command that switch to a
mode to another.
And it's also sound good: you have put a command to change status.

\hskip\zeropoint\hbox{} ;-)
here we see a space of 0pt.
Can be a bit embarassing that a horiz. space of 0pt make difference
between status,
because one can think hey, a space of 0pt is nothing and should do nothing!
(Of course, \hskip0t has sense )

\hskip1sp\hbox{...}
here we see a space of 1sp, ie (1/2^16) * 1pt which is invisible to human eye.
Here my invisible touch effect.
It's more human because i can say hey, you have inserted a hor.
space very small, so small that you can see it,
but it's always a hor,. space not null, so it's reasonable a change of state.

btw,
the context way is
\dontleavehmode

Maybe a complety separete tree (pdftex1.4+ConTeXt) can be a solution.

In luatex there is already lxml, which makes the basic layer.
Context mkiv add a 'context way' to do things .

Sorry if the question seems to be stupid. I would like to know whether

I don't have the answer, but the question is not stupid at all.
From my point of view,
one day
pdftex+latex

luatex+latex

Maybe in 2009 .

error define font: font with name texnansi-qplr is not found.

But that's the problem of a missing font. Here it works OK. What
Arthur pointed out should be fixed though.

Yes, it is not an error .

My mkiv is on a linux box, and it's made only
from pragma last_core_files (setuplinux.zip) + last_stables_zip_iles +
last_luatex+last_metapost .
So, it's a way to signal that there is a reference to a font that in not in
these files.
Of course, I can download fonts and update, (I have done it for tex-gyre
only opentype)
but i want a clean, clear and minimal mviv system .
Maybe this evening I will re-think about 'minimal' (ie, download all fonts)
.

I don't have the answer, but I can tell you how I'm actually using
context and luatex.
First , i don't install anything fromt ubuntu about TeX:
I only use last TeXLive under /opt/texlive
I keep a mkii version of context here, and i have update with last
pdftex and metapost.

Second, for mkiv I always use new context files from pragma; I
compile last metapost and luatex and put all stuff under
/opt/luatex

I feel good with this, because i can change/update distro without
pain, and manage stuffs under /opt is also easy.

I admit that this is not a 'debian' or ubunto way, but i use linux
from 0.99 kernel,
and the only things i have found stable is filesystem hierarchy

[NTG-context] Unicode.otf

2008-01-10 Thread luigi scarso
There is a better font if you need only symbols, choose the Unicode
Symbols link on the following page.

 http://users.teilar.gr/~g1951d/

I'm trying to use Unicode.otf from http://users.teilar.gr/~g1951d
I just copied it into
texmf/fonts/opentype/unicodesymbols/Unicode.otf
run
luatools --generate
and test

%%%test0012.tex
\definefont[WhatEver][Unicode]
\starttext
\WhatEver Hello
\stoptext

with
texmfstart texexec --luatex test0012.tex

Result:
!luaTeX error (file
/opt/texlive/ContextMKiv/tex/texmf/fonts/opentype/public/unicodesymbols/Unicode.otf):
can't find table `CFF '
== Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced!

(I'm using
This is LuaTeX, Version snapshot-0.20.2-2007121721 (Web2C 7.5.6)
ConTeXt ver: 2008.01.02 14:18 MKIV fmt: 2008.1.10 int: english/english
)

Hence, I saved Unicode.otf as UnicodeSymbols.otf with fontforge (saved
as Opentype CFF)
%%%test0012.tex
\definefont[WhatEver][UnicodeSymbol at 100pt]
\starttext
\WhatEver Hello
\stoptext
now works .
Do I have make some mistake ?
And How can I quicky access symbols like U+25c9 ?

This seems to be a slight misfeature in Mark IV: I take that when
opening a font file with an .otf extension, it assumes it is an OpenType
font with PostScript outlines (cubic splines); when the file has a .ttf
extension, it supposes there are TrueType outlines (quadratic splines).
Both types of outlines are mutually exclusive and are contained in
different tables of the font file (respectively, 'CFF' and 'glyf').
This is indeed a widespread convention (including FontForge's), but this
font doesn't follow it, since it has TrueType outlines and an .otf
extension; hence the error message (ConTeXt is looking for a CFF table
and can't find it, since there is a glyf table instead).

When you edited the font in Fontforge and exported it as
UnicodeSymbols.otf, it was converted to a CFF-based OpenType font, so
 ConTeXt could use it.

I consider this a bug in Mark IV (I think the problem is really in
ConTeXt, not LuaTeX). It should be able to use the original font, even
if this extension thing is annoying.
Is there another solution other than fontforge ?
I mean, I was not able to use original font without processing it with
font forge.

And How can I quicky access symbols like U+25c9 ?

One would think you knew that, Luigi! Just use 25c9, for example.
ok.
I mean using by using characters.data in char-def.lua:

  [0x25C9] = { unicodeslot=0x25C9, category='so', description='FISHEYE' },

it should be easy with a bit \ctxlua get glyph by description .

Sure, just rename the font to Unicode.ttf. And the problem should be
fixed now, so try the next beta with the original name as well.
If you mean simple rename to Unicode.ttf, copy into appropriate dir,
luatools --generate, well ,
this did not work last night.
I will try this week with last release.

I guess you're better off preparing the inverse mapping and storing it
in advance, otherwise you would be losing a lot of time because you
would have to loop over characters.data to find the character you want.

 already taken care of ...

 characters.context.unicodes
 characters.context.utfcodes
 characters.context.enccodes

are references to the big table (there are more tables)
I think something like this

This can be caused by a number of things:

   1. The original font file name was still stored in the cache.
   2. You kept Unicode.otf along with Unicode.ttf, and ConTeXt ignored
  the latter.
   3. A combination of the two.
