[NTG-context] Using ConTeXt to create dictionnaries

I think for a linguistic edition using a data base and ConTeXt to create the final edition. [NTG-context] Running context-lmtx on Linux
Hi! I am coming back to ConTeXt after some years; but lately I did find a funny introduction to ConTeXt in French based on context-lmtx (http://www.lesfichesabebert.fr/). I did install it for Windows-64, added the reference to the context folders under TeXworks, re-difined the Context command and everything went OK. I did want to do the same on an old portable computer running lubuntu 16.04 (it's a 32 bits machine with small disk and RAM). I followed all the steps to install it. But this didn't work neither in the console (I get the message "Le programme « context » n'est pas encore installé. Vous pouvez l'installer en tapant: sudo apt install context" - but this, I suppose will install the context from the linux distribution) , nor under TeXworks (message: "startup error: no format file given, quitting". Is there a solution? Or my system is too old? Thanks for your attention and for your help. You were compiling the Swedish tex file from the Swedish directory or from the master directory (where the master file was)? In other words: the compilation of the Swedish text was called from?? the master file? or the Swedish tex file itself? Background: at that point of time I couldn't figure out about project structures. And I drew my flow charts in CorelDraw, hadn't taught myself that, either. :-) NB. This is a bit simplified example of how things went, the real thing contains more directories and subdirectories, but those are not important to explain my idea. What I had is a directory structure like this PR-23 PR-23/swedish PR-23/portuguese PR-23/spanish PR-23/german It all started with a single-language project, language subdirectories got added over time when translations turned out to be of essence. [PR-23 is the name of the product for which the document is written.] To illustrate the system with graphics, let's say that the main directory PR-23 contained a flowchart called flow_troubles.pdf and a wiring picture wrg-366.pdf. Wiring drawings are never translated, so every manual version uses the same graphic. On the other hand, the flow chart needs to be translated for every language version. I did that by copying the English original (Corel Draw graphic) into the language folder, then translating, saving and exporting as pdf in that (sub)directory. The result is that both e.g. the subdirectory swedish and the main directory PR-23 would contain a graphic called flow_troubles.pdf, but the one in the subfolder would be in Swedish. Then, if I needed a Swedish manual, I needed to go into subfolder Swedish and compile the main .tex file there. At the beginning of that file I had the command \setupexternalfigures[directory=../]. When the compilation came to wrg-366.pdf, the graphic could not be found in the same directory, so ConTeXt went one step up as instructed and picked up the wiring drawing there. Later when compilation would get as far to flow_troubles.pdf, ConTeXt would look in the working directory 'swedish', find it there and pick up that one and *stop looking for that graphic*. Ergo, because the Swedish one could be found first, the existence of the English version in the search path is not a problem. This way I didn't need to change the names of my graphics nor my code. It was also handy when translations arrived in batches; I translated the graphics one by one and could always compile a proper looking document, first with all graphics in English, then some in the target language, finally fully translated - and still, if a new version of the wiring drawing turned up, I only had to update the master directory and then remember to compile the translations to get the changes in. One more thing to remember is that I really do product manuals and they are always in fluctuation - there's no final version of the manual until the production of that particular model has ceased. Thus years have taught me to avoid duplicate information to utmost, because the more places to update because of a minor change, the more likely it is to forget at least one of them. Been there, done that... [When I switched to ConTeXt, each manual version was a separate MS Word document. To update a wiring drawing, I had to open each version, import the drawing to replace the old one, then save and close. And hope for the best, switching figures in Word wasn't always that straight forward, ConTeXt is definitely more predictable.] Mari ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : http://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___ ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : http://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev

By the way, for the stand alone version under TeXworks, the bin folder information should go before those of TeX Live to avoid problems. In TeXworks one needs to be careful about paths in either case. (But then again, there's the same issue with basically any GUI program that runs TeX. PATH usually needs to be set up separately from the shell.) My paths are defined in Windows, but with TeXworks they also appear in the definition window for the program. I'll enquire to see if it is possible to suppress those. You can clone a git repository (https://gitorious.org/context) there for example (just make sure that you don't use one extra directory). - Apart from that you need to make sure that mtxrun will be taken from the latest ConTeXt. There are different options to achieve that. (Add $HOME/bin to PATH and put a symlink or copy of mtxrun there, or any other option that comes to your mind.) Re: [NTG-context] Grammar
Hi! Henning Hraban Ramm a écrit : So, as several other posters already said: It's not the words who are to blame, but the speakers and their mind sets... Let me just add a comment about he/she and the willing of the speakers. In Esperanto, there is li = he ŝi = she (same pronunciation) ĝi = it (pronounce ĝ like j in just : dj) The neutral is used when you do not specify the gender (like speaking about a cat without specifying male or female) or when there is no gender (for an object). But Zamenhof, the initiator of Esperanto, said you also use it for young humans, like babies. So it is a real neutral form. But people want to keep their own use (the use from their language) and only keep ĝi for objects. (even if, for example in English, one uses she when speaking about ones boat!!) Some other want to have ŝli as neutral. Other again want to suppress li and ŝi and only have ri. There is no solution to the problem; any solution will find people not agreeing for one or another reason. But one has to try to avoid discrimination. This code gives a nice result with the page sitting neatly centered on the paper. However, when I increase the margin width to 25mm all gets shifted to the left. Both margins get 25 width, the right margin stays within the boundaries of the A4 paper, the left one is pushed outside. One would have expected that with width=fit, the increase of marginwidth would go at the expense of textwidth and that location=middle will still dictate the overall position. But no, it does not work that way apparently. Setting margin=20mm is about the limit. Even setting textwidth to a small size, for example 10 cm, does not work to keep the page inside the paper. The extra white space all shows up at the right side as an enormously wide rightedge while the left margin is still partly outside the paper. In other words: location=middle does not work. Strange indeed. Is there anything that could be done about this? And would it be possible to different margin width for the right and left margin? When I tested some of the page layout possibilities I did read in * that the margin and the text are *not* at the same level, so the margins can be *under* the text. This also means that changing the margin will not affect the text width, and so on. [NTG-context] Installing minimals
Hi! On the 16th of September I mentioned that I had problems to install the minimals. Further, on my portable, the one I used during EuroTeX I could not connect to INTERNET anymore even after changing the connection parameters!! I then decide to un-install the firewall program I use (COMODO -- which I disabled when I tried to install the minimals, but with no result) and... everything is now OK: I could reconnect and more important install the minimals. Still a problem using TeXworks: the synctex system is not working: neither adding -synctex=1 in Preferences or \synctex=1 at the start of the tex source. Synctex appeared only in MikTeX 2.7 by a special (?) instruction in the pdftex (?) program. Is synctex taken into account in context? Re: [NTG-context] Installing minimals
I am using MarkIV, so the call is not directly to texexec but mtxrun.cmd In TeXworks the parameters for MarkIV are Program: mtxrun.cmd Arguments: --autogenerate --script context $fullname and mtxrun.cmd in ..\context\tex\texmaf-mswin\bin is @echo off setlocal set ownpath=%~dp0% texlua %ownpath%mtxrun.lua %* endlocal Should I add --synctex in mtxrun.cmd after texlua. [NTG-context] First report on use
Hi! After discovering some details of ConTeXt during EuroTeX2009 I decided to try it. First problem, already encountered during EuroTeX: installation. On both of my machines the installation of the minimals failed. See attached file. For example: lines 13-14 rsync error, but at lines 26-30 it looks like it works, just a moment: after 30-35 I get 36-37 = error again. On lines 77-80 there is another type of error. But I installed ConTeXt from a copy of what Mari had on her portable (this brings other questions, later); so it works for now. But still in the error file, looking at lines 97-98 and 99-100, for example, what is the installation program changing in my mikTeX installation? --- Now for the working installation. 1) As it was taken from Mari machine, isn't there possible problems with parameters from her machine which are not the same on mine? 2) How can update and/or create new formats? I am using ConTeXt with TeXworks; I did install a full copy of TeXworks (programs and dlls) in C:\Programmes\ConTeXt\texmf-context\context\data\texworks and I issue the setuptex.bat command before to start the ConTeXt TeXworks. (You can see that I installed ConTeXt in a folder without spaces in the name: C:\Programmes\ConTeXt\.) I am only using Mark IV, following the suggestion of Hans (for French,...)
