[NTG-context] formatting verse

2005-06-22 Thread Gary A. Tucker
I've looked on the wiki and in the manuals for an equivalent to
LaTeX's \begin{verse} environment. I found a macro in a file on the
wiki, but the definition of it seems to be obsolete.

What I'm working on is converting a wedding service set using LaTeX
and the booklet package over to ConTeX and its built-in Imposition
features.

no, you can unzip, run textools --fixtexmf --force, regenerate the
database, and cross your fingers

ok, here's what I did:
1. Upgraded MikTeX
2. Unzipped the latest cont-tmf.zip (from pragma-ade.com) into
c:\tex\localtexmf
3. ran textools --fixtexmf --force (what does that do?)

if needed it moves you rlocal enc/map files to their new locations,
not needed if you have no commercial fonts

4. checked c:\tex\localtex\context\config. texexec.ini is newer than
texexec.rme, so I left it alone.
5. ran texexec --make en nl (do I need nl? I'm exclusively
English. I guess it can't hurt.)
6. noticed that cont-en.efmt was automatically relocated to
c:\tex\localtex\miktex\fmt but cont-nl was not.
7. moved cont-nl.efmt to c:\tex\localtex\miktex\fmt
8. renamed them both to *.fmt (per a note in the contextgarden
wiki. Is this necessary?)
9. ran texexec --make metafun
10. moved metefun.mem to c:\tex\localtex\miktex\mem
11. ran mktexlsr

texexec --make (--all if you want all patterns)
is normally enough, apart from moving the fmt and mem files (aren't
those put at the right spot by miktex?)

Hans
Hmm. I normally open a command line window, and execute
texexec --make en nl
in some random directory. The result appears to be cont-en.efmt in the
correct place, and cont-nl.efmt in the current directory. It's
possible that I did not look closely enough, and something entirely
different happened.

I can't see why MikTeX would have any say in the matter of what texexec
does.

Anyway, thanks for commenting. I wasn't sure I was doing the right thing.

[NTG-context] can I upgrade yet?

2005-01-11 Thread Gary
Some months ago I stopped upgrading ConTeXt. Here and there I saw
references to new file hierarchies, and something about installation

2.) If so, is it safe to upgrade?

Subject: [NTG-context] Best source of ConTeXt documentation?

In my efforts to learn ConTeXt, I'm continually getting stuck by a lack of
having complete documentation. For example, consider the \definestartstop
command, which I was recently looking at.

 * In the cont-enp.pdf manual, it's not mentioned.

 * In the mp-cp-en.pdf manual, there's an example of it, but it's not
really
very clear what the difference is between what the commands= and
before= options do. In addition, there's no indication whether these
are
all the possible options or not, or whether there's any way to define a
start/stop pair that takes an argument.

 * In the source, I can find the definitions, but for that particular one
there seems to be very little commentary, and I also suspect I'd need to
be
rather familiar with the ConTeXt core before I could understand it -- I
certainly can't see where the before= goes in, for instance.

And that's about all I know about, other than doing a Google search on the
mailing-list archives, which rarely addresses the general stuff.

Is this all due to an actual lack of documentation for ConTeXt itself, or
is there something large and important that I'm missing?

 Thanks,
 - Brooks

What problem are you having? I tried this example and got the following

 y = (1 + (/a)b)
 y = (1 + a/b)

Which appears to be the correct output. Are you using the current

I have the dec 03 t-nath and version 2003.12.10 ConTeXt.

for the first line I get

y=(1 + a/b)

what I get for the second line is hard to type, but it's what you would
expect from
$y = (1 + a\frac{b}{)} $

so it's as if it's screwing up the arguments: looking for three of them,
putting the first in front of the fraction, the second in the numerator and
the third in the denom. I've tried several different examples. They all
behave exactly as if the arguments are munged in this way.

I must be doing something wrong. But I cut and pasted the code from the
e-mail I sent out and processed it, and I got the error I describe.

If I run it through LaTeX, I get what you describe (and what one would
expect).

Is there an environment variable that I can set to help texexec find its
way?
Or a command line switch? (I have not found mention of either in the docs)
(Putting texexec.ini in the directory containing the ConTeXt .tex script
works.)

[NTG-context] Update failure: I'm losing my mind

2003-12-10 Thread Gary Pajer
MiKTeX.

I've done this half a dozen times. This time it doesn't work. I feel
stupid. What have I forgotten?

Things were working perfectly. I decide to update, so I download
cont-tmf.zip to \localtexmf. Then I unzip, overwritting all the old files.
Then I update the database either using mktexlsr or the MiKTeX options
wizard.

But now texexec can't find texexec.ini. But it's there, in
\localtexmf\context\config (as well as \texmf\context\config)

BTW, if I execute kpsewhich texexec.ini it returns without an error, but
also with no information. Is that right?

Re: [NTG-context] Re: another itemize question

2003-10-30 Thread Gary Pajer
  it is listed as \setupitemgroup

are they synonyms? why two names?

For those, who still wonder: \setupitemize is a command generated by
 \defineitemgroup.

 \defineitemgroup [\v!itemize] [\c!niveaus=6]

 in core-itm.tex

Good idea to clear that up.

Now back to our regularly scheduled thread...
I'm reaching the conclusion that the behaviour I reported at the top of the
thread is a bug.
Is it?
If so, is a workaround or fix possible?

[NTG-context] itemize: before/after only with columns?

2003-10-11 Thread Gary Pajer
It seems to me that the 'before' and 'after' keywords used in the third
argument of \setupitemize are operative only if 'columns' are also
specified. In the example below, the hairlines disappear if the 'columns'
keyword is eliminated.

Feature or bug?

BTW: can the lengths of the two hairlines in this example be made to be
the same length? What's causing the indentation of the first hairline?

Regards,
Gary

[NTG-context] postscript math font ?

2003-10-05 Thread Gary Pajer
I'm relatively new at ConTeXt, and have been avoiding all issues related to
fonts ... till now. I've struggled with the manuals, some source code, the
list archives, and google, but I have to cry uncle.

I have a MikTeX installation. (would I be better off with TeXLive?)

I can use postscipt fonts hence:

\setupbodyfont[pos,ber]

or

\usetypescipt[postscript]

The first I got from a suggestion on this list, the second is in Fonts in
ConTeXt. They both seem to work. But they both set math in computer
modern. The example in Fonts in ConTeXt has math set in something that is
*not* cm. And when I use LaTeX, my math fonts are not cm.

So how can I get a better looking (IMHO) math font when using postscript?
What's the difference between the two ways of setting postscipt fonts?

tia,
Gary
