OpenBSD has a port in current (it will make 4.3, to be released in
2008-05). FreeBSD clings to tetex. :-{
Maybe with enough support from the Ports team of FreeBSD, we can switch
from teTeX to TeXLive? But this is a plan which requires quite a bit of
work from experienced TeXhackers, which I am not :-/

you've probably chosen an encoding that has no matching tfm files in
the distribition
(\setupencoding[default=ec] may help)

It seems teTeX is missing tfm files even for `ec', since trying to
