[NTG-context] open quotation not working

2013-10-12 Thread Ciro A. Soto
When I use `` to open a quotation, I don't get the character for open
quotation, instead, I get the two single quotation character. (The closing
quotation works fine)
Is there any command to fix this? (the problem occurs in english or spanish)
thank you

true. the example code is mkiv only. as mkii is frozen (no new features)
pdf/x support is limited to mkiv. you also wrote
'The file produced by LuaTex is PDF 1.5.', so where is the problem? ;)

 mkii (pdftex): texexec yourbook.tex
 mkiv (luatex): context yourbook.tex

anyhow, here is an interesting link about pdf/x-1a

 http://www.prepressure.com/pdf/basics/pdfx-1a

there a quite a lot of other restrictions in pdf/x-1a (aside from what
can be handled in context). be sure to fulfil them all.
and you have to ask your printing house, what output intent is used
 (probably stated on their side).

updated test files (now one for each version) are attached.

It's a complex subject, I fear that you need acrobat to be sure or

 Anyway

Context should be able to produce PDF/X-1a:2003 so far (donno the
difference to the 2001 version). I will look into it tomorrow (no time
now). To give you a first impression what is needed (data, formats), I
attached a test file (mkiv only) for the 2003 variant.

It's a complex subject, I fear that you need acrobat to be sure or

Context should be able to produce PDF/X-1a:2003 so far (donno the

now). To give you a first impression what is needed (data, formats), I
attached a test file (mkiv only) for the 2003 variant.

 \starttext

I guess that you are asking about MKIV since it seems to work OK in MKII.

What is the fix for this? Any switch?
(I know I could use \char but I am looking for a more elegant solution)

The most elegant solution is to use just ñ and it should work out of
 the box there.
But still I would ask Hans to add the following line to enco-ini.mkiv:

\defineaccent ~ N {\Ntilde}\defineaccent ~ n {\ntilde}

You can try to modify the file yourself, then run context --make and
 it should start working.

(I always thought that these lines were auto-generated from Unicode
 data on the fly.)

not this one; the ntild probably got lost at some point during cleaning up

[NTG-context] spanish tilde-n lost

2009-06-27 Thread Ciro Soto
Hi all,
I finally got around the intallation of context minimals. Thank you for
those who helped. I ran my old tex files (in spanish) and found that \~n is
not working now.
It should create an n with a tilde on top, but what happens is that there is
no
letter printed at all.

What is the fix for this? Any switch?
(I know I could use \char but I am looking for a more elegant solution)

thank you
Ciro

the mtxrun file and the luatools file in the bin path are the same as the
ones in the lua directory.
I ran diff and got nothing. For instance:

% *diff ~/context/tex/texmf-context/scripts/context/lua/luatools.lua
~/context/tex/texmf-linux/bin/luatools*

I copied them anyways:
*%cp mtxrun.lua ~/context/tex/texmf-linux/bin/mtxrun
% cp luatools.lua ~/context/tex/texmf-linux/bin/luatools

and:

*%which mtxrun*

So the mtxrun script should be run by texlua, which is again a symlink to

Re: [NTG-context] Keeping up-to-date under TeXLive

2007-12-26 Thread Ciro Soto
Hello all,
I used Context to write an entire novel in 2005 (under Fedora linux).
Since then I didn't
do any work in Context until now. I am now coming back
to write a second book (under Ubuntu this time), and found myself
totally confused with all
this new business of luatex, mkii, mkiv, installation, etc. This set
of messages touches
many of those issues, but it is not organized in such a way that I can
follow a step-by-step
procedure to use the latest Context. I even question whether I need to
use luatex.
Could any of the Context gurus give me an advice or provide a document to
update my Context in ubuntu?

Thank you

Ciro

Also, if you already have a working TeX distribution, you can write a

   you have:
   - current ConTeXt
   - almost-latest binaries
   - fonts
any you can combine the stuff from there in some arbitrary way.

So, since I have a working TeX from Ubuntu, I want to put all the
new stuff in my TEXMFHOME (A.K.A. ~/texmf). To this end, I could
use some help putting the rsync calls together.

That's OK, but I would neverthelees suggest you to put the files under
TEXMFLOCAL, since TEXMFHOME is usually searched recursively for files
and thus much slower (well, it depends on texmf.cnf).

(One question though: doesn't Ubuntu provide pretty recent files
already, or is that only in unstable versions?)

In each case the command will take the form rsync --recursive --perms
--compress --checksum --times --links --verbose rsync://something/
~/texmf/somewhere, which I'll abbreviate in this email as rsync
  -rvzctlp rs://cg.net/minimals/current/... ~/texmf/... (so lines don't
  get broken at inconvenient times).

The basic ConTeXt stuff gets pulled in, as Mojca suggested, thus:
  rsync -rvzctlp rs://cg.net/minimals/current/context/current/
  ~/texmf/

 That's OK.

Next, I want to get the up-to-date binaries, for which I'd like to do
  something like
  rsync -rvzctlp rs://cg.net/minimals/current/bin/[*]/linux/ ~/texmf/
where I either need to write a separate line for each of {common,
context, luatex, metapost, pdftex, xetex}, or have a single command
  that includes them all.

common is taken from TeXLive, so you prabably don't need it.
context are usually one-liners + mtxrun texmfstart (the latter two
 might be needed).

 rsync -rvzctlp
 rsync://contextgarden.net'/minimals/current/bin/xetex/linux/bin/
 minimals/current/bin/pdftex/linux/bin/
 minimals/current/bin/metapost/linux/bin/
 minimals/current/bin/luatex/linux/bin/' x

Where the only requirement is to have x in PATH before TeXLive binaries.

(Note that the trailing slash makes the difference.)
Once upon a time you would also need xetex.pool, metapost.mem,
 pdftex.pool, but they're gone now :)
(you may remove bin in the lines above)

If you make a single call, it will be faster.

(Since I intend to put this all in a shell
script, a bit of duplication isn't a problem.) This will put
  /current/bin/[package]/[system]/bin/[whatever] into ~/texmf/bin/,
where I think they belong in an installed system.

The location is up to you. Just make sure it's in PATH.

  The manuals seem to be in a somewhat odd place (under bin!);

These are not the manuals, but man pages (OK, that's documentation
indeed, but the important thing is to place them parallel to bin in
 order to make them work).

 I have
 texmf-osx-intel/bin/ [xetex, pdftex, ...]
 texmf-osx-intel/man/man1/ [man pages]

  I'd use
  rsync -rvzctlp rs://cg.net/minimals/current/bin/man/ ~/texmf/

That should work if you have the binaries in ~/texmf/bin

but no programs should care where they are; this is my own use. In
fact, perhaps I should put the man pages where the man system can find
them. I'll leave this for another day.

NB: I have no idea whether I need the stuff in /current/base or
/current/misc, nor where in the texmf tree they would go.

No, you don't need that. You have it already.

 Now, concerning fonts [IMPORTANT]:
I would really really love to split them somehow since they're huge
(there's only TeX Gyre, LM, Antykwa some AMS, but they still take
quite some space), but I have no idea how. Hans has suggestes some
non-TDS compliant way. Any ideas wellcome.
The *important* warning means: things (locations) may change
 concerning fonts in the future.

The fonts are, like the binaries, in a
  /current/fonts/[group]/fonts/[format]/... tree, and the installed
system should have them in ~/texmf

 It doesn't quite work.

If you give a single argument to \defineconversion, it expects the
conversion to be a command that takes an argument. Since you haven't taken
an argument, the number gets typeset after the asterisk. Also, the
asterisk needs to be in math mode to get positioned correctly, I
think. Correcting for both of those gives this, which works:

  \def\gobble#1{}
  \defineconversion[starred][\mathematics{*}\gobble]
 \setupfootnotes[conversion=starred]

However, that's somewhat of a hack; better is to set up the footnotes to
reset the counter on each page, and then use one of ConTeXt's predefined
conversion sets that starts with an asterisk but follows it with other
symbols. That way, if one changes the file so that there end up being two
footnotes on the same page, they won't both get asterisks (which would be
 confusing).

That can be done quite simply, like so:

 \setupfootnotes[way=bypage,conversion=set 2]

Set 2 uses a \dag and then \ddag as the symbols after *, which is fairly
standard typographic practice. If you prefer to do a sequence of *, **,
***, and instead, try something like this:

  \defineconversion
[asterisks]
[\mathematics{*},
 \mathematics{**},
 \mathematics{***},
 \mathematics{},
 \mathematics{\dag},
 \mathematics{\ddag}]
 \setupfootnotes[way=bypage,conversion=asterisks]

1) Is there a way to do it with two files (one for langauge 1, another

or do I have to put all in one file?
2) Would it be easier to write two pdfs file and do a composition afterward?

Idris,
thank you very much for your explanations... they are very helpful.
regarding ttf translation, I have in my system (I guess it came with

unix ttf2pt1 -b fontname.ttf

which then I used with your cooking instructions for garamond...

= Original Message From [EMAIL PROTECTED], mailing list for ConTeXt users
 ntg-context@ntg.nl =
My problem goes beyond fonts. What I think I need is a simple explanation
of the TeX-like package system. For instance:

 I see tetex,pdftex,contex, latex,web2c,...and so on, but I don't understand
 their interrelation/dependency.

teTeX, fpTeX, gwTeX, and MiKTeX are os-dependent distrbutions.

LaTeX and ConTeXt are os-independent macropackages.

Web2C is the Pascal-to-C translator that allows compilation of TeX on Unix,
Windows, etc. /web2c is the directory that contains configuration files and
 os-dependent format files. But I don't know why it's called /web2c

Why the livetex tree is like it is? What is needed for a context user?

ConTeXt has become so detailed and powerful, and changes so fast, that the
os-dependent distrbutions can't keep up. I predict that one day ConTeXt will
be completely independent of TeXLive. Some of the problems many of us have
been facing ultimately boil down to the growing, but not yet complete,
independence of ConTeXt from TeXLive. Personally, I think this a good thing,
because ConTeXt is really a stand-alone system in the final analysis.
mswincontext.zip is _almost_ there; maybe Hans could use volunteers to build
and maintain independent Mac and Unix packages a la mswincontext.zip. Then we
could contribute to a test/torture suite to make sure that everything runs
identically on all os's. Each of us may have pet issues that concern us (I
have my aleph work for example, there are fonts, xml, etc).

What are the steps to upgrade context with a cont-tmf.zip and a texlive2004?
Would it be possible to create an shell script that automize all this?

I would get the tetex package from pragma, install it in its own tree, define
your path so that your ConTeXt bin is searched BEFORE TeXLive's, and have your
shell script initialize your tree (maybe there are instructions in the teTeX
package). I modified my setuptex.bat so that my ConTeXt tree would search my
TeXLive tree as well; I suppose you could do the same with setuptex.csh.

 Where are fonts registered/stored/mapped/encoded?

There is a document somewhere on the TeX Directory Structure (tds), I think.
 Look in /texmf/doc/tds

Most books on TeX,latex, etc, only explain how to use them, but not
the 'system administration' part, which must of us have to learn as well.

There is an old book, Making TeX Work, that aimed to do just this. But it's 11
years old and woefully out of date.

BTW, I used Idris instructions (without step4 because my texfont works)
and I have installed three different fonts so far. Actually, I
 converted TTF fonts
to pfb/afm, then used the Idris steps, and I am happy.

How did you convert ttfpfb? I did this once using FontLab and I lost all my
 macron accents:-(

But texfont and pdfetex work with ttf files so there is no need to convert:-)

Now I hace to learn how
to build typescript files, and learn where to put them,

What I did was just get one complete working typescript and model my other
typescripts on that one. If type-ugm is working for you, just study that one.
 Five steps:

 % raw fonts
 %Names
 %Synonyms
 %maps
 %typefaces

Note that you can mix and match fonts to create your own complete typefaces. I
am enclosing a typescript I did for Times New Roman and Arial (type-tnr.tex)
that I posted a few weeks ago.

About placing type-* files: You can put them anywhere in your TeX path; I put
mine, along with some other private configuration files, in
/texmf-local/tex/generic/private, but you can put them anywhere you like under
 your TeX path.

 and the mapping/encoding
 business.

I think you don't have to worry about this too much, except that texfont
defaults to texnansi, while the fonts that come with TeXLive are mostly ec. So
you should avoid use of \char as much as possible in your macros, and stick to
 character control sequences like \circumflex.

(untested, but hopefully you get the idea...)

 adam

unfortunately, I have a mental mess with the font business in tex.
How can one keep track with so many directories, encodings, file types,
maps, etc... I am tired of trying to undestand. Manuals are useless
because they are outdated, trees are changed and need texhash, plus,
on top, one needs to learn the syntax for Context to use fonts.
I've been spending days trying to install a verdana font, and no
matter what I do,
it doesnt' work, and I think the same is happening with the garamond.
I have no lesss than 3000 font files in my computer, but so far, only a handful
are available in context. At this point,
I really wish I had a graphical tool to install and use a font,
without going through
all the --always changing-- steps...
I guess, some day, someone will clear this up for once...

Thank you Patrick...

I am my distributor maintainer.
I installed linux in my pc box less than a year ago,
and I see font files everywhere (X directory fonts,
TeX directory fonts, TrueType, OpenType, Type1,
etc...)
but don't know if they are accessible from Context.
what is the local guide you refer to?

Wouldn't it be nice to have a command in Context like:

\listavailablefonts [type1 | truetype | ... | all]

or

\listavailablefamilyfonts [] ...

and another to check whether a font is properly
installed (that is, whether it has \bf, \it,
\sc, math, etc), like:

\checkfont [fontname]

Luigi, thank you. I've read the outdated documents
you suggested, but still ...

Another question, this one is for Hans:
I tried your file from feb 27:

I typed texexec --pdf supp-fu3.tex

Where could be the problem? I see the definition of

[NTG-context] lack of hyphenation

2005-02-26 Thread Ciro A. Soto
The knowlegeable John Culleton said in one of the
lists that he could recognize if a book was typeset
with
MS-word by looking at the rivers and the lack of
hyphenation. I then checked my 310-page book I am
typesetting with context and not a single line had a
hyphenated word at the end.

So, my question is: Is it okay? or do I need to set
any parameter to allow hyphenation?
I do have
\tolerance=1, because I don't like lines longer
than the rest, but I thought I could still get some
hyphenated words. Am I right?

[NTG-context] 4UP with no table of content - bug?

I have this 310-page book with a table of content

When I switch to
\setuparranging [2UP,rotated,doublesided]

if I rerun the job for a second time using

Is it a bug or do I need to do something special?

[NTG-context] looking for a grammar checker in linux/tex/context - or alternative

2005-02-18 Thread Ciro A. Soto
Some time ago I asked for a speller in linux.
I found that aspell does a good job. Now I want
one step up: a grammar checker. Since there is
no such thing in linux (AFAIK), then
my question is:
Is there any
way to ask context to output the file in a format
importable by MS Office? (sorry, I don't like this
solution, but if you have one within the realm of
linux/gnu licenses, let me know). May be plain 'text'
format, or rtf? So I can use the grammar in MS.

I listen to any other idea...

[NTG-context] texsync - help

2005-02-15 Thread Ciro A. Soto
I just discover the existance of texsync by browsing
the manuals.
I tried to update the manuals and it worked fine in a
$HOME/tmp directory.

I am kind of skeptical in updating the whole context
installation because I don't know the proper
destination option.

I installed tex using texlive2004, and it created a
directory /usr/local/texlive2004/ in my Fedora3

I wonder if the following command would do
the job wihout harm:

texsync --full --update --force

and what else should I do afterward.

 Hello all,

I am reading a beautifully designed book called
'Boodbye Gutenberg, and it gave me inspiration to
change the design of my self-published novel.
 However,
I wonder if with my limited knowledge in Contet I
 can
make it happen. Here it is:

Version 1: The text is standard, justified both
 sides.

When the reader opens the book I want him/her to see
 a
background light-gray picture centered in the spine
 of
the book from the top of the page to the bottom.
 (The
picture is a guitar with the strings along the
 spine),
I would like half of the guitar in the left page,
 and
half in the other page. In other words,
there would be a bleeding picture to the right of
 the
left page, and a bleeding picture to the left of the
right page. The text would be black, and the guitar
would be seen as background. I know it is difficult
 to
follow my explanation, but I hope you understand.

Version 2: The text is wrapped around the figure,
 that
is, each line in the left page is left justified,
 but
ends at the border of the picture. And each line in
the right page is right justified, but begins at the
 border of the picture.

I am hoping to get the version 1. The other version
is like an exercise for me, to see how it would be
 done.

I have tried with layers for the background picture,
and it works, but I don't know how to tell Context
 to
use alternative pictures, one for the left pages,
another for the right pages. My apologies for the
 length ...

fontdemo.sh

-

find `kpsewhich -expand-var='$TEXMFMAIN'`/fonts/tfm -name '*.tfm' -print

	xargs sh -c 'for i in $@; do (echo $i; echo \\\sample\\\bye) | \

It gives you one dvi-file per installed font in your TeX-System - that
is usually a lot.
