[NTG-context] new context option

2024-02-22 Thread Hans Hagen

Hi,

As I needed to check some commands i added this:

   context --find="%\starttabulate"

which will (should) give a list of lines/files in the documentation
where this command is used.

[NTG-context] New upload doesn't work on macOS 10.13.6

2024-02-18 Thread Ralf Heinrich Arning
Hi list,

after having tried to update with the new upload, ConTEXt doesn't run anymore.

According to the output the new version requires a more recent system. I still
use macOS 10.13.6 (High Sierra).

This is what I get:

[NTG-context] new upload

2023-08-15 Thread Hans Hagen

Hi,

I uploaded a new lmtx (some new - experimental - things will be
explained after the ctx meeting), but there's one thing that is somewhat
important.

In addition to the built in units we can now have so called user units.
There is some more info about this in the lowlevel-registers manual. One
of the predefined units is 'uu' with an associated \ununit (dimension)
variable and it's is also interfaced to metafun. That means that when
you use uu in metapost graphics you have to make sure that you save the
meaning and/or numeric uu now.

The idea is that just as in mp one can say 20xx with xx being a (sort
of) unit, one can do the same in tex. Think of

\newdimension \MyUnitA  \MyUnitA 1.23pt

\pushoverloadmode % just in case
\newuserunit\MyUnitA ua % binds the unit to the variable
\popoverloadmode

x\hskip 10ua\relax x

The units starting with 'u' are considered user units but be carefulk
with other combinations as we have (and will have more) built into
context ones, like

pi : pi for Mikael
ft : foot for Alan
fs : (global body) font size
tw : (layout) text width
th : (layout) text height
hs : (current) hsize
vs : (current) vsize
cd : (when set) column distance
cw : (when set) column width
cx : combination cell width
uu : user unit (\METAFUN)

So Mikael can now have

  test \hskip 3pi\relax test

and Alan can have

  \setuplayout
[width=1ft]

to be consistent with inches.

The reason why we have this mechanism is that it provides a level of
abstraction. It might evolve over time but don't expect the 600+ units
possible to show up because one needs sensible shortcuts. Already built
in unit always win and you cna only bind to already defined quantities.

Here's one for those who want to go beyond the normal:

\newdimension \FooA   \FooA 1.23pt
\newdimen \FooB   \FooB 12.3pt
\protected\def\FooC   {\the\dimexpr\FooA +\FooB\relax}

So you can now figure how 'cx' is defined in a dynamic way.

[NTG-context] new upload

2023-07-18 Thread Hans Hagen

Hi,

In todays upload there is a follow up on a new feature that is already
present in the previous upload (but that was not yet advertised):

  context --parallel test1.tex test2.tex test3.tex

  context --parallel --pattern=test*.tex

  context --parallellist myfile.cmd (filters context processing lines)

  context --parallel test1.tex test2.tex test3.tex --terminal

The --parellel feature will run in parallel, By default upto 8 jobs but
you can specify less or more depending on your hardware but on my
machine this is reasonable.

See workflows-parrallel at the end for more info. That one also mentions
the new --forceinput flag which makes that when these

  context foo-1.tex --mode=m-1 --forceinput=whatever.tex
  context foo-3.tex --mode=m-3 --forceinput=whatever.tex

are run in parallel there is no clash in tuc/pdf. Of course not all
scenarios might work out well. Commandline arguments given are passed on
to the different jobs but it's good enough for the purpose I have in mind.

fwiw: a single pass teststuite run (some 1950 files) goes down from 1350
to 700 seconds but another run with 1200 complex xml documents goes 4
times faster. In the end this is way cheaper than updating a 5 year old
dev machine (a new one would run about twice as fast which would bring
about the same gain).

Hans

ps. Because tex is a memory intense application it doesn't scale with
the number of cores unless one has the latest greatest fast memory as
well as generous cpu caches. There's only so much one can do in the code
base about it.

[NTG-context] new upload

2023-07-09 Thread Hans Hagen via ntg-context

Hi,

No functional changes this time:

- some more consistent usage of new primitives instead of helper macros,
also a bit of a look and feel related effort as well as getting even
less tracing clutter (the kind of changes for Wolfgang to check -)

- as aside effect there is some performance gain (there is not that much
more to gain now unless we go ugly); this all depends on usage of course

- at some point some of the more obscure middle level helpers (dating
from mkii) might move to a module as i don't think anyone uses them in lmtx

There are quite some files affected (all is tripple checked but who
knows). If there are issues, they should be easy to fix.

We're now moving into page builder (another side effect of math tuneup)
mode and have some new features coming there.

Hans

[NTG-context] new version

2023-06-22 Thread Hans Hagen via ntg-context

Hi,

I uploaded a new lmtx version (so the next series will be luametatex
2.10.10). Although Mikael and I are still in improving math mode, we
side tracked a bit to the par builder (better breaking of math etc). In
the end some experiments there turned features.

(1) We already had a more granular par builder but that was never really
enabled. From now on you can do that with

\setupalign[granular]

After quite some tests and careful inspection of outcome we think that
the results look better, which is why if could become a default. The
main impact is a bit more even spacing between neighbouring lines,
because we operate in five instead of three ranges of primary badness now.

(2) As side effect of (3) initialization of expansion (as well as
compression and protrusion) is delayed till it kicks in. This means that

\definefontfeature[default][default][expansion=quality]

has become cheaper and might as well become the default.

(3) The biggest new feature (already known to some of you as we chat
about it) is that in addition to the (upto three) passes that create a
paragraph we can now have extra ones. This is discussed in
lowlevel-lines.pdf (preliminary). The second pass is the most important
one (it uses hyphenation but not yet emergency stretch) and, based on
criteria that can be set, between the second and third pass multiple
attempts can be triggered.

So, for instance one can start careful (pass one), less careful (pass
two), test all kind of variants (pass 2 subpasses) etc. These subpasses
can have different tolerances, demerits, expansion, etc and quit once
soem criteria are met.

The problem here is: what makes good defaults. Therefore we have some
tests definitions added (see spac-pas-tests) that we hope users will
test on realistic documents.

In case one wonders: performance is quite okay and you won't notice much
difference on a reasonable run. Also, when you normally use expansion
for a whole document, you can now let it kick in more selectively. As a
result a run can be faster and the resulting pdf file can be smaller.
This feature kind of assumes (1) above.

(4) There's also a new feature for optional content: you can have marked
sections in a paragraph that can be enabled or disabled in attempts to
get better output. Of course one can wonder it this is useful but it was
one of the older todo's. When it is considered usefull it can evolve.

(The lowlevel-lines manual is work in progress and in a few weeks we
will pick up on that.)

Please don't do this! I fear it will break my habit of keeping older versions
that worked for me. As a safeguard against things that are broken and will have
to wait when repaired!

Great!

For the moment I disable a few badly packages zips:

metaducks, sudoku, aquamints, simpleslides

as they put files in the root and their own directories and I am not
adding a zip-root remover and additional checkers.

I regard it good practice to have README, LICENSE and VERSION files in
the root. A public git repository without these is incomplete, and if we
use the zip/tgz packaging of platforms like github or gitea (codeberg),
we can’t exclude them.

The installer script could just ignore/delete them.
I currently wipe them but it's extra work and who knows what shows up in
the future.

But either the module scripts should re-pack tgz archives or the

There is code for unpacking gzip and tar but I don't think we should
start mixing formats and zip is kind of what we always did.

The modules are in the imp files (mentioned when loaded) but the urls
are sort of abstract (and resolved in the installer).

I've added an option to directly pass an url but I suppose that is only
for testing. After all, we expect some quality checks and thats what the
garden does.

but as said, it's only for testing (or for modules not yet mentioned in

[NTG-context] new module installer and .tar.gz compression

2023-05-08 Thread Pablo Rodriguez via ntg-context
Hans,

many thanks for the new script to install modules in LMTX.

I forced a new release of handlecsv
(https://modules.contextgarden.net/cgi-bin/module.cgi/action=view/id=86).

I provide the contents with a git address, so I cannot choose which kind
of compression the code will have.

Since imports from git use .tar.gz, these modules cannot be installed
with the script (which seems to expect .zip compression exclusively).

Sorry, but I don’t know how to force git urls to be added as zip
packages in https://modules.contextgarden.net.

Many thanks for your help,

Pablo

The moral of the story is that we all missed something by not attending
BachoTeX - as is the case every year. One should note Hans' reference
to the gala dinner, which is better characterized by an excess of
dishes of food than by an excess of alcohol.

We have an opportunity to make up for this missed occasion this year by
attending the annual ConTeXt meeting. Of course, these two meetings are
complementary and ideally one should aim at attending *both*.

As to the Dutch left and right thumbs, the French word is also "pouce"
for the length of an inchworm. My question is, what is the appropriate
unit for inching forward or inching along? Would this be one inch per
fortnight?

Hi Hraban,

Attached a picture of the edithorial which is now in posession of the

famous, this one will put the (engineering) university of Lund on the

another one of Willis masterpieces of woodwork and packaging.

If Alan had been present we might have gone for measuring toes intead of

discrete we also made sure thet people with different left and right

that was demood live on camera. It's in de details.

During the meeting (aka conference) and in preparation Mikael and I were
on 0% alcohol beers, so effectively that unit would then be a multiplier
of zero, but I'm sure you can find a usage for that.

I forgot to check what the pct was of the wine at the (as usual) huge

Actually we were talking of some 'eps' and interval based comparison in

You know a subset:

Edith Sundqvist : on-site research, presentation
Mikael Sundqvist : scientific supervisor, calibration, article
Willi Egger : quality assurance, edithorial device
Karl Berry : peer review, tugboat
Hans Hagen   : implementation, article

It was a three person presentation on multiple laptops and phones, so
very serious indeed. It would not work for a large audience with a
distance of more than 100 es (20 theodores) distance to the audience as
the audience was also participating.

The problem with introducing the theodore is that it introduces another
'male name' unit while actually the new ones got 'female names' in order
to counter the didot and cicero (and dk although we considere that a
neutral unit), which was one of the projects objectives.

Okay, we can from now on assume the 'mm' to be the Mojca which is also
more officient: 4 mojcas instead of 4 millimeters. It's a downward
compatible change (only in the documentation). Then we can introduce the
tr as precisely 5 es, a kind of snaposhot unit, whgich makes me wonder,
as the theodore eventually will come close to a foot we might have a
\thfactor then that starts out at 5. We can decide at the ctx meeting.

(In case one wonders: because internally tex works with fractions mm/cm
and ts/es (/tr) make sense.)

(As explained during the presentation, adding units to luametatex is not
really putting a (performance) burden on this engine. In pdftex and
luatex it would have an impact, although in luatex somewhat less because
we prioritize our favourite units anyway.)

That is incorrect. Feet is an establish and proper unit of measurement, which
consists of 12 inches. It is used by, at least, several hundred million
people. It can be said that the ability to grok and manipulate fractions has
many benefits, which the metric system sorely lacks.
Sure, but it's not a unit in tex like 10ft so reporting 19 feet looks a
bit odd for the (majority) texusers who dont'use feet. (we have mm and
cm but not in and ft). I suppose yards could also have been used but
probably points out more prominently the limitation.

https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voet_(lengtemaat)

An amsterdam voet being somewhat smaller actually would have made 20
which is a nicer number and also fits the base 20 inuit system discussed
a few weeks ago.

Honestly, I don't know how Knuth resisted putting this in plain TeX.

Plain TeX is a format so ther it would be easy, just define

\newdimen\potrzebie  \potrzebie = 422042sp

but for a real unit you need to adapt the original engine and that will
not happen because it's in bug fix only mode.

Anyway, you can try it in lmtx:

\startTEXpage[offset=1dk]
\number\dimexpr1dk
\stopTEXpage

As introduced in:

https://www.tug.org/TUGboat/tb42-3/tb132hagen-dk.pdf

Like the ts is makes a nice offset.

The inch is properly defined as *exactly* 2.54cm.
So the foot is a proper unit defined as 12*2.54cm.

Manipulating fractions, I stated, is the entire point of Imperial
measurements.

Now go figure: Physical Review Letters once objected to my publishing a
graph without units on the abscissa. I satisfied the editor by adding
$[m\times m^{-1}]$ (my graph was in radians).

[NTG-context] new units

2023-05-04 Thread Hans Hagen via ntg-context

Hi,

We now officially have three new units. These were officially introducd
at the 2023 BachoTeX meeting in a presentation where the chair of the
four person strong team also did the final live callibration (using the
edithorial callibration instrument made for that purpose). An upcoming
article in TB will explain the details of the process and also a careful
mathematical annalysis of how we reached the right value with a high
precission. The actual implementation is the most boring part.

\starttext

\startTEXpage[offset=1ts]
Hello World!

\the\dimexpr 1ts

\the\dimexpr 1es

\the\dimexpr 1eu

\eufactor20

\the\dimexpr 1eu
\stopTEXpage

\stoptext

The es (Edith) unit replaces the inch, and the ts (Tove) is one tenths
of than (just like we have cm and mm). The eu (European Unit) is an
adaptive one that defaults to 10 ts == 1es and can be multiplied by
setting the \eufactor (default 10) which makes it possible to define
layouts that easilly scale to different output media (important for the
mobile phone / table generation).

This means that MWE that use inches will likely no longer be considered
valid and probably will be dealt with slower (or just ignored).

These units can be used in the current upload. In a next upload the "19
feet max" message that tex issues when reaching a maximum will be
adapted to a more realistic variant. (Actually, because tex has no foot
unit, we could as well replace that with a more impressive little feet
unit but we forgot to measure the smallest foot present which i guess
was about 3 es so the limit is then some 75 bare theodores.)

2022-12-28 Thread Zdeněk Svoboda via ntg-context

Hello Willi,

I'm glad that it "sorted itself out". I will look into the bugs with
Chrome later but it is weird indeed. I was developing the app mostly
using Firefox, so it should work fine there hopefully.

Thanks for the progress animation, but I will have to take it out
because I believe it is under copyright so there will be just a boring
spinning circle.

Sincerely,
Zdeněk

Am I correct? I will try to reproduce it taking your steps and will try to fix

And for the logout -- you did not manage to logout at all?

Thank you for the kind words. I'm hoping it will be a useful tool to promote

You can probably test with uploading a font the the work directory.

Hans,
thanks for the tip.

I uploaded a noto-cjk font file, NotoSerifCJKsc-Regular.otf, to the
root directory.
Also, my typography file, test.tex, is in the root directory, and it reads

```context
\definefont[myfont][file:NotoSerifCJKsc-Regular.otf*default at 12pt]
\starttext
{\myfont 我我}
\stoptext
```

Then I did not get the correct PDF file, i.e. the two Chinese
characters are not displayed on it. and the log shows:

```log
..
/home/admin/context/tex/texmf/fonts/data/gust/lm/lmroman10-regular.otf
52fonts > 2 U+06211 我
53fonts > stop missing characters
..
```

I processed on my Win10 PC, with the same font file, test.tex and the
same directory structure,
and got the correct PDF file and the log is as follows:

```log
..
fonts   > defining > source file
'c:/windows/fonts/NotoSerifCJKsc-Regular.otf' is not found
fonts   > defining > using source file
..
lmroman12-regular.otf, notoserifcjksc-regular.otf
..
```

Any further hints?

I am working on a MacBook Air, 10 year old, updated to the latest possible Os
version, which is Big Sur (11.7), in this case I used Google Chrome.

You are correct. I created a file with the provided interface and saved it
several times while building the test. During the building I uploaded two
pictures, which were present in the file-pane. After this experimenting with
the letter-eating bug the engine got in a endless loop which I had to terminate
by closing the browser. After reopening the web-site the three files were gone.

> And for the logout -- you did not manage to logout at all?

I was not at all able to logout.
Is it the normal behaviour of this site, that you are automatically logged in
again when starting?

Again thank you for your work. I am also impressed about the overall
performance of the tool!

I’m afraid I’m getting the same error with newer upload

Re: [NTG-context] New c-o-w: The XMas gift for ConTeXt users

2022-12-27 Thread Zdeněk Svoboda via ntg-context

Hi Willi,

Thank you for the feedback!

Strange bug being thrown out of the editor while not logged in -- I'll
have to look into that because I have not encountered it yet.

May I ask what browser and OS are you using? I'm unable to reproduce the
bug with the tab-key in tabulate.

I know about the letter-eating bug and apparently I haven't been
successful in fixing it yet.

As for the files lost:
  1. you created an account,
  2. uploaded some files and pictures,
  3. then tried to generate a PDF which got stuck,
  4. so you refreshed the page,
  5. and the files were lost?
Am I correct? I will try to reproduce it taking your steps and will try
to fix it.

And for the logout -- you did not manage to logout at all?

Thank you for the kind words. I'm hoping it will be a useful tool to
promote ConTeXt!

Sincerely,
Zdeněk Svoboda

Re: [NTG-context] New c-o-w: The XMas gift for ConTeXt users

2022-12-27 Thread Willi Egger via ntg-context
Hi Zdeněk!

Congratulation, the online version, the web-site looks very nice. you have
built in a lot of nice features!

I tried the interface for a short while. During testing I was thrown out each
time and you do not understand why. — Does this have to do with the fact that I
did not create a user-account?

While creating a tabulate I detected, that the use of the tab-key is only
possible at the beginning of the line. When using the tab-key inside a tabulate
line the whole line is indented for another tab.

While it is nice to see all the available command-choices it is rather less
intuitive, that always the brackets are placed. Specially while editing \bTABLE
… \eTABLE and the commands belonging to this table-type it could be good to
have the right arrow key to have the command placed with brackets and with the
down-arrow-key the command being placed without brackets (?) — I think, that
the source should not be cluttered with empty brackets all over the place.

When you start the editor from the website you have no idea, what the layout of
the page will be. While being somewhere in the edited text I switched to the
layout-wizzard. Strange enough it is A4 on A3-Paper, I think for a normal user
it should be A4 on A4 paper. The default layout dimension is in pt. — I doubt
whether this is the best for a newcomer. May be mm would be better? — After
returning to the editor I detected, that the new layout is placed at the
cursor's position. Might it be a good idea, to place this at the top of the
document or probably to ask the user whether the layout change should be placed
at the cursor’s place?

In the meantime I also created an account. — Strange that I have to confirm the
account to an e-mail, which does not make any reference to what account this
confirmation is asked for.

Nice is that now I was not kicked out of the editor anymore!

While testing further I experienced, that the system is eating up a letter:
\blank[small] —> caused a sequence undefined error: in the log there was
\blank[smal … Hereafter I put a space after small and it worked correctly.
Then I withdrew the space, saved the file and started generation of PDF. — got
a hanger… After restarting everything it appeared, that my test file was not
listed in the editor’s left pane and also not the two uploaded picture-files. —
I tried to logout. Logout does not seem to work.

Not withstanding all my comments, I am impressed how your system works. Once it
will be stable I am convinced, that it can be a useful tool to promote the use
of ConTeXt. Thank you for all the work performed so far!

Kind regards

Willi

[NTG-context] new upload

This permits top and bottom alignments of text blobs without interrow
spacing being disturbed.

A bit more weird addition is the new \TM (move) option:

\starttext

\defineorientation[test][orientation=down,vertical=top]

\TM[b] \NC \darkgreen cell four  \NC \darkblue cell four  \NC \NR
\stoptabulate
\stopbuffer

\start \showmakeup[line] \showstruts \ruledvbox{\getbuffer[b]} \stop
\start   \showstruts \ruledvbox{\getbuffer[b]} \stop
\start   \ruledvbox{\getbuffer[b]} \stop

\startbuffer[b]
\definetabulatemove[a][xoffset=20pt]

\starttabulate[|p|p|]
\TM[a] \NC \darkred   \samplefile{tufte} \NC \darkgray \samplefile{ward}
\NC \NR
   \NC \darkgreen \samplefile{tufte} \NC \darkblue

\samplefile{ward} \NC \NR

\stoptabulate
\stopbuffer

\start \small \small \showmakeup[line] \showstruts \getbuffer[b] \stop

\stoptext

This uses some new low level alignment options that operate on rows as a
whole. As usual, I have no clue what users will come up with but the
idea is that these 'moves' are independent of the alignment so the in
this case shifted columns actually keeps their alignment. (It is mostly
about consistent support luametatex engine features but it might come in
handy.)

Some other 'new' things are too obscure to mention now,

It's a matter of choice. It's not so much about 'support'because these
fonts work ok, but more about what is a reasonable subset of fonts for
cjk (covering all of chinese, japanese, korean).

You can probably test with uploading a font the the work directory.

[NTG-context] New c-o-w: The XMas gift for ConTeXt users

2022-12-26 Thread Zdeněk Svoboda via ntg-context

Hello ConTeXt community!

I'm Zdeněk Svoboda, a master degree student at Mendel university in
Brno. I've been using ConTeXt for a while now and have always been
impressed by its capabilities and the helpfulness of this community.

For my thesis project with Tomáš Hála as the supervisor, I've developed
an online application for working with ConTeXt. The main goal was to
create an application capable of compiling ConTeXt source right from the
browser but I thought that it's not enough and added a few features or
tools on top of that. Functions of the application include:

    - User accounts to save files and access them from other computers.
    - Editor with syntax highlighting and autocompletion for ConTeXt
command.

    - Generating PDF document and previewing it directly from the browser.
    - Layout designer to customize the layout of their documents with a
variety of options and mouse resizability of each layout element.
    - Table designer for creating and customize tables with alignment
and border settings, colors, merging and splitting cells eg.

    - Lists designer with a simple interface to customize lists.
    - Help function for ConTeXt commands (hidden under the "?" button)

Developing this application was a great learning experience for me, and
I faced a number of technical challenges along the way. For example,
having to dig through the XML document to extract all the information
needed for the "?" help function.

I'm excited to share my project with the ConTeXt community and hope that
it will be a useful resource for someone. If you're interested in trying
it out, you can find it at https://www.context-on-web.eu/. I'd love to
hear any feedback or suggestions you have. If you find a bug or
encounter an error while using the application, please let me know (and
cc: th...@mendelu.cz) the steps you took that caused it.

Known bugs:
    - Generated code from table designer needs better formatting
    - Duplicated color definitions in table designer
    - Layout designer -- numbers are not rounded

Best regards,
Zdeněk Svoboda

[NTG-context] new upload

2022-11-14 Thread Hans Hagen via ntg-context

Hi,

I uploaded a new version. New is that we can apply hz to math, although
currently we have configured it as experiment.

\setupbodyfont[pagella]

% \startluacode
% fonts.expansions.vectors.math = {
% [0x002B] = { 4, 0 }, -- +
% [0x2212] = { 4, 0 }, -- -
% [0x003C] = { 8, 0 }, -- <
% [0x003D] = { 8, 0 }, -- =
% [0x003E] = { 8, 0 }, -- >
% [0x002F] = { 2, 0 }, -- /
% [0x0028] = { 2, 0 }, -- (
% [0x0029] = { 2, 0 }, -- )
% [0x005B] = { 2, 0 }, -- [
% [0x005D] = { 2, 0 }, -- ]
% }
% \stopluacode

\setupmathematics[hz=yes]

\startbuffer \showglyphs
\dorecurse{20}{\strut test $x + y/2 - w = 10$ }\unskip
\stopbuffer

\definecolor[tgreen][g=1,t=.5,a=1]
\definecolor[tred]  [r=1,t=.5,a=1]

\startTEXpage[offset=5dk]
\startoverlay
  {\ruledvbox to 5cm{\setupalign
[tolerant,stretch]\tgreen\getbuffer\vss}}
  {\ruledvbox to
5cm{\setupalign[hz,tolerant,stretch]\tred\getbuffer\vss}}

\stopoverlay
\stopTEXpage

\stoptext

Normally an expansion factor is small and used for both stretch and
shrink, but we can have them independendent. So, here we stretch rather
extreme but don't shrink.

\setupmathematics[hz=yes]

only kicks in when we have hz enabled as alignment option. We can of
course configure more 'stretchable symbols' but first we want to know if
it makes sense at all. We can also imagine to disable it in specific cases.

Denis,

Thanks for the feedback.

No, you are not missing anything. The ConTeXt command list comes from a
file that Hans & Hraban maintain - to create the PDF version of the ConTeXt
commands guide that is available with the distribution -
https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Documentation (we convert that file into a
Typescript object and then use it in the Language Server).

Yes, this is an obvious improvement point that you have highlighted - I
will work with Hans & Hraban to improve it.

Best,

Many thanks for your reply, Hans.

A complete install has revealed the real cause of the slow download: the
antivirus software (that works like crap).

The time that I thought it was downloading each single file, it was
really analyzing it.

Even worse, when the AV software didn’t like the contents of the file,
it saved an empty file (I have seen it with text and PDF documents).

I had a backup copy, so it updated it (manually) with what a new install
for Win64 (which I got in Linux64).

curl is installed in both Linux and Windows (and there was no secure
install on any of them).

And according to lines 634-640 from mtx-install.lua, if curl isn’t
installed, the installation script should quit:

  if environment.argument("secure") then
usecurl = checkcurl()
if not usecurl then
  report("no curl installed, quitting")
  os.exit()
end
  end

Or what am I missing here?

Many thanks for your suggestion, since it helped to discover the real
cause of the non-working update.

Hi Hans,

I have tried updating ConTeXt in Windows this morning and I’m afraid it
hasn't worked.

Until I can manage this, I think I will download (to the extend that is
possible [and if this works at all]) a Win64 distribution using Linux64
with "--platform=win64".

The problem is clearly not the speed of the internet connection. I use
internet with the standard speed.

There are two things that strike me as possible causes.

1. Depending of which update is pending, the script announces a
different number of files to be downloaded.

The problem is that each individual file download seems to require a
complete connection.

I mean, it takes about ten seconds to establish a connection for each
file. It is irrelevant how big the file actually is.

After that, it isn’t much harder to download the LMTX binary than a tiny
text file.

so then just do a complete install

For most files, they aren’t downloaded in the first connection (they may
require more than three downloads). It doesn’t seem to depend on size.

This is what makes it hard to reach even 10% in the download.

And even if some files may have been downloaded, once the script quits,
the already downloaded files need to be downloaded again (since the main
download process wasn’t completed).

2. The whole download is http instead of https.

sure, but if you have the curl(lib) installed in principle one could do
a secure install (I didn't really test it but it's in there)

Sorry, but this may be causing the delay in the connections (because
they may be being filtered by the company proxy [and I don’t want to ask]).

https://lmtx.pragma-ade.nl seems to be the only source used (in Windows)
and its certificate is only valid for lmtx.pragma-ade.com (according to
Firefox).

hm, you can change the url in the install script (maybe i can set up the
server differently but not now)

Even using "./install.sh --secure --platform=win64" (I’m on Linux now,
no Windows here), I get:

mtx-install | instance : install-lmtx
mtx-install | platform : windows
mtx-install | system   : unix
mtx-install | fetching
'http://lmtx.pragma-ade.com/install-lmtx//texmf.zip'
  […]
mtx-install | fetching
'http://lmtx.pragma-ade.com/install-lmtx//texmf-context.zip'

I don’t know whether this is a bug or it is intended.

BTW, "local function checkurl()" on line 52 of mtx-install.lua ends with:

   and find(s,"rotocols")

not important (p P)

I think it might read (although this doesn’t seem to change anything in
my case):

   and find(s,"protocols")

Is there anything that I could to to improve the download process?
If per-file is slow at you end you can try to just install the whole lot
(just delete the tex tree or at least the tma file that stores the
hashes) because then the zip is downloaded and installed (one fetch).

the math goodie files (work in progress, we will clean them up later) as
part of improving the rendering of math.

Something is wrong with the placement of limits around an integral with
NeoEuler:

\usetypescriptfile[euler]

\definetypeface[mainfont][rm][specserif][CharisSil][default]
\definetypeface[mainfont][mm][math] [eulernova][default]
\definetypeface[mainfont][tt][mono] [dejavu][default] [rscale=0.8,

\setupbodyfont[mainfont,10pt]

\starttext
\startTEXpage[offset=1mm]
   $\displaystyle \int_{0}^{1} f(x) dx$
\stopTEXpage
\stoptext

gives the attached result.

This is because the integral "sits wrong" in its boundingbox. Almost
all fonts have the glyph centered around the math axis, but there are
a few that doesn't. In euler-math.lfg, add the tweak

{
tweak = "fixoldschool",
},

This fixes the issue with eulernova, but not with pagellaovereuler.
pagellaovereuler uses euler-with-pagella-math as a goodie file, but that is
missing from the distribution. (I simply copied euler-math.lfg for my use case).

With tweak=fixoldschool, \startcases doesn't work correctly (see attached):

\usetypescriptfile[euler]

\definetypeface[mainfont][rm][specserif][CharisSil][default]
\definetypeface[mainfont][mm][math] [eulernova][default]
\definetypeface[mainfont][tt][mono] [dejavu][default] [rscale=0.8,
features=none]
\setupbodyfont[mainfont,10pt]

\starttext
\startTEXpage[offset=1mm]
   \startformula
 \startcases
   \NC A \NC B \NR
   \NC C \NC D \NR
 \stopcases
   \stopformula
\stopTEXpage
\stoptext

Looks like some older experimental value is wrong:

   parameters = {
-- DelimiterPercent=  901,
DelimiterShortfall  =  500,
},

(that whole lfg is a todo)

I think there is some free upgrade policy. In general the old font
should work ok given that one can live with the (current) inaccuracies
(ance it's done there will be an article about the improvemnets that
clarifies things).

We already concluded long ago that the suite of math fonts is somewhat
inconsistent (between and within fonts). We try to deal with that as
good as possible and believe that we have found the right mixed
approach. If needed we can catch averythign in the goodie files but we
try to minimize it so once this is all settled down, we can improve
specific font related issues based on {\em realistic} user mwe's as we go.

Concerning large operators .. it worked before so ... the main reason
why in e.g. euler it failed was a configuration option (euler fonts will
be fixed too) which is a side effect of more advanced script anchoring
in lmtx.

The issue I observed with the new upload of 2022.10.15 is that the
presentations I typeset with the simpleslides module are broken after three
pages, but could not set up a minimal working example to send to the list.
Those presentations are typeset correctly with previous versions.
Has Metapost changed some crucial settings ?
some mp->tex interfacing macros were upgraded but that should not really
matter much so i need an example of what goes wrong (quite some month
ago we fixed some left/right page related interfacing but that should
not affect single sided documents)

In Lucida the integrals have almost been at the right place. See the
attached screenshot. To the left, the unfixed Lucida (first aligned at
the base line, and then centered around the math axis). To the right,
the same with fixed Lucida.

In the eulernova example that Aditya shows, the difference is much
bigger. The fixoldschool tweak fixes it, but it is of course better if
it gets fixed in the font.

Regarding the Lucida fonts: When you bought them you should have got
some login information. That should still work, and you should be able
to upgrade your fonts when released. I don't know how they (TUG) do
releases, though, if they send out information to all people who
bought the font. Hans and I are only involved in the fixing.

/Mikael

PS There are some other glyphs in Lucida that will be fixed. The <, >,
\oiint and \oiiint (displayed versions of the integrals). If you add
them (and, say also a = close to the < and >) to a document, and use
\showglyphs you will see why.

This fixes the issue with eulernova, but not with pagellaovereuler.
pagellaovereuler uses euler-with-pagella-math as a goodie file, but that is
missing from the distribution. (I simply copied euler-math.lfg for my use
case).

With tweak=fixoldschool, \startcases doesn't work correctly (see attached):

In fact, we have not updated the euler goodie file for a while it
seems. I think there are more things that can be improved. Hopefully
before next release.

It can also be mentioned that some fonts (Daniel Flipo was quick to
fix concrete, erewhon and kpfonts) was fixed recently regarding this,
and it is reported on and fixed in development of Lucida.

Something is wrong with the placement of limits around an integral with
NeoEuler:

\usetypescriptfile[euler]

\definetypeface[mainfont][rm][specserif][CharisSil][default]
\definetypeface[mainfont][mm][math] [eulernova][default]
\definetypeface[mainfont][tt][mono] [dejavu][default] [rscale=0.8,
features=none]
\setupbodyfont[mainfont,10pt]

\starttext
\startTEXpage[offset=1mm]
  $\displaystyle \int_{0}^{1} f(x) dx$
\stopTEXpage
\stoptext

gives the attached result.

Thanks,
Aditya

the idea is to provide the user with all he needs as archive so no

I asked to make this optional not to avoid having the source, but to be

Subsequent installs should only download source files that have been
changed, so the download should be faster (also for the font files :-)

I applaud the inclusion, by default, of the luametatex source files.

Thank you everyone who has contributed to this.

Many thanks for the new version, Hans.

I have discovered that it includes in
tex/texmf-context/source/luametatex what should be the LMTX source
(about 11MB).

I wonder whether this could be made optional. Internet speed is not
constant where I live and it was impossible for me to update at work
(after many attempts to download the newer version).

Just in case it would be possible, modules (also as an option) would be
more useful for many of us.

Many thanks for your excellet work,

Argh, how could I have forgotten about that. Yes, that makes complete
sense.

Ok good, that's what I was expecting. I've unfortunately used some
programs that even fairly recently depended on the system code page, so
I'm always a little cautious.

Yes, Hans confirmed that that is correct.

I'm not too sure what you're asking here, but Notepad was somewhat-
recently updated to handle both CRLF and LF line endings:

Also, you should probably check to make sure that the results of the
file don't depend on the current code page on Windows. Try writing out a
buffer from ConTeXt with the following contents:

АБВГДЕЖЗИЙКЛМНОПРСТУФХЦЧШЩЪЫЬЭЮЯабвгдежзийклмнопрстуфхцчшщъыьэюя

First, run "chcp 65001" before running "context" and record the size of the
file written. Then, run "chcp 1251" and run "context" again. Hopefully the
file size doesn't change; but if it does, then that means that the binary
content of any file written will depend on the system's default code page,
which would complicate making reproducible hashes.

For more than two decades, all my TeX sources are written in UTF-8.

I thought that ConTeXt would output the same character encoding as in
the source file when saving a buffer.

I haven’t found this issue and I’d say that all my saved buffers are
UTF-8 encoded.

the magic is in

savedata(name,replacenewlines(content),"\n",option == v_append)

because tex reads in and then lost what it saw (cr lf crlf) we use the
line endings of the operating system (good old typewriters and windows
use cr+lf and old macs uses cr while linux uses lf)
