It will be easier to read the source of l-.lua and luat-XXX.lua in tex/context/base, these are included in cont-en.lua, luatools.lua, and mtxrun.lua. The l-.lua modules are intended to be "pure" lua: you are able to use these in texlua(c) scripts.
