This is because it's a greek sigma and I'm pretty sure that e.g. Thomas 
would be surprised to see a math symbol showing up in his greek.


You need to use another one:

$$\sum\frac{1}{\frac{1}{\frac{1}{\frac{1}{2$$

$$∑\frac{1}{\frac{1}{\frac{1}{\frac{1}{2$$

is no longer stretched/scaling regardless of the sub/superscripts
