thanks you for the solution to my font problem. I appreciate it.
I'm trying to understand the definefont command you used and it seems that the
arguments 'sa 1' in the macro is a size indication somewhat similar to 'at
10pt' but uses a relative size parameter as opposed to the absolute pt value.
That the numeric argument after 'sa' is a multiple of the current font size.

[NTG-context] Font problems.
On the same source file Texlive 2004 context (mkiv) can find files that a more recent stand alone version of context can't. I need to set something somewhere so that the stand alone version can find files in /usr/share/fonts/OTF. I call the stand alone version from a script called Context in /usr/local/bin: . /home/safe/context/tex/setuptex context $1 - /home/safe is my home directory. Stand alone context is in /home/safe/context. This morning, I played around with the minimals on my linux eeepc (had always used TeXLive, but saving some space seemed like a good idea) and got exactly the same problem: instead of bold, I get bold italic. If I typeset the same file with my TeXLive installation, I get proper bold. So Vasile is on to something here... As for the missing bold, it seems there's a bug in the naming scheme:
Ii the bold italic file gets read from the disk before the bold, then
you don't get the right entries. It so happens that most of the fonts
in that dir had bold before bold italic, e.g.

Before I get anymore strawman arguments, here's the definitive experiment: $ ls -U1 /usr/share/fonts/vista/ | grep erda Verdanai.ttf Verdana.ttf Verdanaz.ttf Verdanab.ttf $ ls -U1 /xp/wtf/ Verdana.ttf Verdanab.ttf Verdanai.ttf Verdanaz.ttf Notice that the directory order is different, bold comes before bold italic in wtf. I actually had to copy the files to a non-ext3 partition (NTFS actually) to get the order to change. Why? Because with ext3 htree you have *no* control over the order in which the directory is laid out, because it's not a linear list anymore. XeTeX solves this problem by using *only* the ID 16 and ID 17 OpenType values to create a unique name for system fonts. If you still haven't figured out how to reproduce it, apply the patched I've attached. It will force the hash entries to be added in sorted order. With the patch applied, if you have some fonts called Calibri Bold Italic.otf Calibri Bold.otf Calibri Italic.otf Calibri.otf the order of hash insertions will always exactly as above, regardless of disk order, e.g.: filename | 49 - /usr/share/fonts/vista/C-series/Calibri Bold Italic.otf filename | 50 - /usr/share/fonts/vista/C-series/Calibri Bold.otf filename | 51 - /usr/share/fonts/vista/C-series/Calibri Italic.otf filename | 52 - /usr/share/fonts/vista/C-series/Calibri.otf So, you'll get bold italic instead of bold in the PDF. Feel free to fiddle with the sort function if you name fonts differently, but you need to make sure that bold italic gets loaded before bold for the bug to occur. with Gerben Wierda's i-installer).
normally things should work ok when one generates the metrics with texfont (or
installs the font metrtics zip); problems can be anything, from a missing tfm,
to a missing (or differently named type1) or a messed up map file, or an old
pdftex ...

I updated ConTeXt to the latest version available in i-Installer and
the error dissapeared. Although, another thing started to mess upp. I
write my documents in UTF-8 and was before upgrading using the
\enableregime[utf] commande which worked perfect. After upgrading
though, I only get blanks instead of special characters. Has the
command changed?

NOW `sin' IS, sqrt NEVER IS \crlf

The second line doesn't show the sin in bold as contrasted with the
special remark in the manual. I does show in bold with \mf however.
Has the math behaviour changed meanwhile? Or does it point to still
another flaw in my setup?
The following fonts appear in the pdf (as seen in Adobe Reader):
CMMI12, CMSY10, LMRoman12-Bold (and 9), LMRoman12-Regular (and 9).
this behaviour is ok; \bf switches the text font (using families) and
that's just of of the 16 possible math fonts then; the problem with math
and fonts is that (1) we don't have enough families and (2) using tricks
to bypass that do not help because math fonts come into play at the
second parsing of the math list, when tex knows what it's dealing with;
by then only fam numbers are uses intermediate changing of font
assignments to them has been lost (the last family assignment counts)
in comparison, the following LaTeX example has the right behaviour:

I used to work with the TeX i-Package install. But every once in a while tex has to be updated. Then I was confronted with fairly hefty downloads for my humble isdn-telephone connection (not everyone has adsl). That's the reason I switched over to installing teTeX and ConTeXy directly. Not much of a pain with an installer shell script and a fast machine. But thanks for your interest anyway. A newer ConTeXt assumes the newer Latin Modern afaik. The ConTeXt updater i-Package will get you the latest ConTeXt in texmf.local. If such an install still does not get you a working ConTeXt, I'd be interested to find out why (and we can help each other) because it is my goal that you have a working ConTeXt after such an install).
