with that ancient version you can try your luck with
\protectbufferstrue in cont-sys.tex (copy it from cont-sys.rme if it
doesn't exist yet).

Same here (at least while generating pdf): I only see the left
side of the bottom serif of the T, because that is the only thing
that will fit on the page.
It is quite possible that your resulting characters exceed
some size limit in DVI mode. Try \setupoutput[pdftex]

in

Now I see in output of pdfeTeX:

Don't know. Metapost seems to be complaining about something
that is part of extra_endfig, but neither trees.mp nor mp-text.mp
do anything with that, so it may be completely unrelated ?

If you can create a minimal file that shows the same problem and 
post/e-mail that, I may be able to help further.
