There is also a typo in section 8.4.14 Contexts, in the lua code:
name = "ytest", should be: name = "ctest",

Works at the moment only when the fonts in a place where ConTeXt can

Re: [NTG-context] Fonts from various .otf to work with \bold, \emph, \bf, \bfa ...

2020-02-06 Thread context

Hello Pablo,

thank you for showing the way; unfortunately, still something is
missing:

- the resulting file uses LMRoman instead of WorkSans,

- the log confirms:

"selectfont > The requested font 'WorkSans' has no files for the
'tf' alternative, Latin Modern is used instead".

- Note that all WorkSans files:

  work-sans.bold.otf
  work-sans.bold-italic.otf
  work-sans.light.otf
  work-sans.light-italic.otf

are placed in the same directory as the main source file. (I can zip
them and upload somewhere for testing purposes.)

- In your code bellow, I cann't see any link to any work-sans .otf file
name.

  - Does it mean that that ConTeXt browses its database of "known"
fonts, searches for all fonts which contain "identification" as
"WorkSans" (given from your \definefontfamily...[WorkSans])?

- Also, I see assignments [tf={style:light},it={style:lightitalic}]:

  - Should also an assignment for "bf=[style:...]" be provided?

  - How ConTeXt gets to know from "it={style:lightitalic}" that file
"work-sans.light-italic.otf" should be used?

Sorry for elementary questions, I'm still "in captivity" of swtching
fonts, their styles and font sizes by clicking a combo in Word toolbar
(although I quit using Word about 15 ys ago). And although I'm aware of
different dealing with fonts in TeX (and in professional typesetting in
general), it's often difficult for me to imagine how exactly TeX
switchches fonts, what is the relationship between (and how the comands
cooperate) \definefontfamily, \setupbodyfontenvironment, \setupbodyfont,
\definefontsynonym, \definefont, typescripts, simplefonts module and
also what is the relations among parameters to the-above commands.

So any practical samples (e.g. here discussed) helps me much.

Best regards,

Lukas

Hi Lukas,

[NTG-context] Fonts from various .otf to work with \bold, \emph, \bf, \bfa ...

2020-02-06 Thread context

Hello,

although font switching used to be discussed here and I studied wiki
about font changing, I don't switch fonts in ConTeXt very often and my
"maximum" font change was provided by \setupbodyfont[(e.g. termes)].

Now I am in the situation that I need to use fonts defined in:

  work-sans.bold.otf
  work-sans.bold-italic.otf
  work-sans.light.otf
  work-sans.light-italic.otf

(all from https://www.1001fonts.com/work-sans-font.html)

so that:

- normal text and math (nothing special - just subscripts) would be
typeset with work-sans.light.otf

- \bold (\bf) would use work-sans.bold.otf,
- \emph (\em and \it) would use work-sans.light-italic.otf,
- \bi would use work-sans.bold-italic.otf
- also commands \bfa, \bfc, ... would use work-sans.bold.otf scaled
somehow (probably by multiples of 1.2).

Some help setting it up and making it work would be appreciated...

Best regards,

Lukas

Beautiful, indeed!

Btw, I was thinking whether Fonts in ConTeXt book is still relevant (from the
ToC I conclude it deals with MkIV) aand/or provides enough info so that in case
I buy some 3prd party fonts (I am considering something from
https://mbtype.com/) I'll be able to configure ConTeXt to use them?

Similar concern in regard to layouts and the other book...but, I believe that
both are very useful in any case and ordering them is a small appreciation for
the work done for ConTeXt.

Hello,

I'm putting all my 'eggs' into ConTeXt basket and would like to learn it as
thoroughly as possible.

Considering that I always prefer physical books over starring at my computer
screen, I wonder if the books from the subject are still relevant for learning
about creating layouts and configuring additional (bought extra) fonts in
today's ConText?

Re: [NTG-context] Fonts and equations

2018-05-18 Thread Lance Larsen
Henri,

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried to add the additional fonts, but this
did not seem to make a difference. The math equations render fine, but a
search performed for terms in an equation still does not work when I
specify the font. When I remove the font specification, it works fine.
There must be some difference in the font that is used even if I don't
specify a math font. Any other thoughts about why the math font changes or
how to get a math font that is searchable, or get back to the default math
font?

-Lance

\setupbodyfont [arial,rm,10pt]

$z_1 = x_1 + y_1$

$a = b + c$

I have a context document with several equations. One really nice feature
with equations is that by default you can search for variable names in

Ahoi,

while I found a workaround for my problem, I still don’t understand the cause:

– I defined a family of Gentium and Delicious in a typescript file (as attached
in my previous post),
– If I load this in a minimal example, as above, all is well.
– If I load this in an environment, the fonts are ignored. There are no error
messages.
– If I change the font size from 9.5pt to any integer size, it works!

Does this ring any bells? What’s wrong with decimal font sizes, and why only in
a project setup?

[NTG-context] fonts

2016-10-06 Thread Hans Hagen

Hi,

At the last context meeting it was decided that he groups will support
the upcoming stages of the tex gyre font project. The work is done by
the polish font gurus and so far they have been funded by the user
groups. However, this time not all groups join in, while still
substantial funding is needed for this stage that will run for several
years.

For a while there is already an entry for the project on:

https://www.tug.org/donate/dev.html

If you use the free math fonts you might consider donating there. After
all, we depend on these fonts and there is still work to do: adding
symbols to text fonts, a bold (heavy) companion for titling, a sans for
titling, a monospaced math font for editing and manuals, completion,
etc. The font folks have always delivered so donations will be well
spent. ConTeXt has always been the first to use these fonts and I sort
of assume that we will get these additions done as well, as it will make
our live so much easier.

The simplefonts module (which has been replaced by the \definefontfamily
command)
can only use fonts which are indexed by ConTeXt, to use fonts in the
same directory
as your document you need a typescript which loads the file with the
filename method.

[NTG-context] Fonts inside eqno{}

2016-04-29 Thread Freddy Omar López Quintero
Hello all!

I'm interested in change the natural numbering of one equation with \eqno{}
but it does not follow the main font selected.

A minimal example:

%%
\usemodule[simplefonts]
\setmainfont[Linux Biolinum O]
\setmathfont[Linux Biolinum O]

\starttext

I have the following expression

\placeformula
\startformula
y = Z \beta_1 + Y \beta_2 + u
\stopformula

that changes to

% \placeformula
\startformula
y = Z \beta_1 + Y \beta_2 + W_1\tau + u \eqno{ (1')}
\stopformula

\stoptext
%%

I would like the (1') keep the same kind of font than (1).

Any hint will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Actually it seems the issue is with kpsepath not searching fonts files
recursively. I tried to set OSFONTDIR="/usr/share/fonts//" (with two
trailing slashes — I even tried more…) but it didn't help, though
kpsewhich --var-value=OSFONTDIR gives the expected path.

I've ended linking all fonts directly in $HOME/.fonts/, but of course a
cleaner solution would still be welcome.

hm mkiv doesn't use kpsepath.

Assuming that you are in yor context tree
(/opt/contex, if I read correctly)
make a symlink of /usr/share/fonts/liberation
under tex/texmf-local
so that
tex/texmf-local/liberation
has the ttf fonts.

Then, to be sure,
$ mtxrun --generate

compile this file test.tex

\usetypescript[liberation]
\setupbodyfont[liberation,12pt]
\starttext
Test text
\stoptext

$ context test.tex

and check it with

In tex/context/base
there are several typescript files
type-imp*mkiv
you can have a look at them.

This is my way to use system font: just copy them into context.
A symlink or a true copy both have pros & cons, but I tend to prefer true
copy
(really, I try to avoid system fonts at all).

[NTG-context] Fonts... bold smallcaps

2015-10-08 Thread Willi Egger
Hi all,

sorry for bothering you with this.

I have a font Seravek-Regular.otf and Seravek-Bold.otf. It is actually my
company font.

Now I needed to use bold-smallcaps. But I can not get it working, though
otfinfo tells, that in the bold font there are smallcaps

In my typescript file I have the following two lines, from which the Regular
variant works perfectly well.

 \definefontsynonym [SansCaps] [Seravek-Regular]
[features=smallcaps]
 \definefontsynonym [SansBoldCaps] [Seravek-Bold]
[features=smallcaps]

I tried to get bold smallcaps with \bf\sc but without success.

Can anyone point me what to do?

Kind regards

Willi

SansBoldCaps does not have a ‘short form’, afaik.

>> Can anyone point me what to do?
> \bf\setsmallcaps

(or \let\sc\setsmallcaps, somewhere in the setup section, which is what I
usually do).

Note that this method does not need nor use the SansCaps and SansBoldCaps
synonyms in the typescript, and that it only works for well-behaved opentype
fonts. Oh, and it may give you italic smallcaps, something the old ’SansCaps’
based method never did.

Best wishes,
Taco

It works perfectly fine. The font was an improved conversion from a

 Improved in which way?

Wolfgang,

at least, I added the space character (which is missing in the original
font). I don’t remember if I included other improvements.

The attached newotf-error.log contains the error message.

Since both font files were generated with FontForge, I would like to
know what they are missing to report upstream to the FontForge developers.

there seems to be a cid entry operator seen when populating a private
dictionary in the cff section

you can add this in line 552 of font-cff:

cid   = {
-- actually an error
},

and the font will probably load then, unless there is a fundamental flaw
(i don't know where to get that font)

2014-06-10 Thread Flavien Lambert
Hi all, following the subject of my previous messages, I was wondering what
is the paremeter that governs the parentheses, brackets and so on.
The following command does change the sum sign for example but not the rest:

\definefallbackfamily [mainface] [math] [Latin Modern Math]
[preset=math:mathematicaloperators,tf=name:latinmodernsans,scale=1.2]

The help text mentions this, but somewhat cryptically --- it's not
quite clear that --all requires --list. Maybe mention that, like so?

--list --name list installed fonts, filter by name [--pattern]
--list --spec list installed fonts, filter by spec [--filter]
--list --file list installed fonts, filter by file [--pattern]

--pattern=str filter files using pattern
--filter=list key-value pairs
- --all show all found instances
+ --all show all found instances (combine with --list)
--infogive more details
--track=list enable trackers
--statistics some info about the database

Cheers,

mtx-context | current version: 2011.05.18 18:04

Uh...well the situation is the following
1) I'm using ubuntu 12.04 lts 32 bit
2) I don't use tex* from ubuntu
3) I manually install the latest mkiv in /opt/luatex/context-standalone
(for mkii and mkiv only )
4) I manually install texlive under /opt/luatex/texlive/2012 (for latex
only)

You have a more-than-a-month-old mkiv, which currently means unsupported.

Hi Hans,

If I understand it correctly, with the \setupbodyfontenvironment one can define
various sizes and then apply them to various styles such as \it, \bf, etc. This
is indeed great!
But in your example the math fonts disappear: is this intended?

Best regards: OK

Re: [NTG-context] Fonts in Mk IV -- \definefontalternative documentation?

2011-11-11 Thread Christian
Hello and welcome to the world of ConTeXt!

I was in you place about one year ago :)

The best way to get started with fonts is probably the simplefonts module. I
haven't used anything since I started and was able to do everything I wished
for, so far.

Installation:
Run
first-setup.sh --modules=t-simplefonts
if you use Context standalone (if not, refer to
http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Modules for installation and download links).

Then this file should get you started:

%%% BEGIN
\usemodule[simplefonts]
\definefontfeature[default][default][mode=node,script=latn,kern=yes,palt=yes,tlig=yes,trep=yes,init=yes,size=yes]
 %some default features
\definefontfeature[frac][default][frac=yes] % opentype 'frac' feature for nice
fractions
\definefontfeature[sups][default][sups=yes]
\definefontfeature[onum][default][onum=yes] % old-style figures
\definefontfeature[lnum][default][lnum=yes]
\setupsimplefonts[expansion=quality, protrusion=quality] % sort of microtype
thing. makes things look better =)
\setmainfont[Myriad Pro] % set Myriad as main font
\definesimplefonttypeface[sb][Myriad Pro][regularfont=myriadprosemibold,
italicfont=myriadprosemiboldit] % define a second font called 'sb' for semibold

\starttext

Test normal\\
{\sb Test semibold}\\
{\sb \it Test semibold}\\
{\bf Test bold}\\

Opentype font feature demonstration:\\
{\addff{onum} 1234} 1234\\
{\addff{frac} 1/17}
\stoptext
%%% END

Hello, I am coming to ConTeXt from LaTeX and have a typescript question. I
was searching for information on the mailing list about defining semibold and
other font variants, and found the following. Can you tell me if further
information is only available in the book context mkiv -- Fonts or can I
 find it
somewhere else? I have searched through the revised Fonts chapter of the
ConTeXt manual but the \definefontalternative macro and the approach
described here are not documented there.

The approach below works for me if I adapt it to Adobe Garamond Premier
Pro, but I am attempting to build a typescript for that handles optical
 weights,
small caps, etc and I have not been able to make it work yet.

Before I try posting a minimal example, I would like to be sure that I am
looking at the right documentation. I have looked at the Fonts in LuaTeX
page on Contextgarden as well, but I don't think I have a full understanding
of typescripts using OSFONTDIR fonts yet. If there is something I am missing
 please let me know.

 Thanks,

Huh, he wrote it works for GaramondPremPro and in his code he's using MyriadPro
-- which, to my knowledge, does not come in optical sizes.

I thought he is struggling with the remaining weights besides regular and bold
(light, semibold, black) for Myriad, so I posted a simplefonts solution to that.
Can't help with typescripts, though.

Re: [NTG-context] fonts

2011-08-26 Thread Hans van der Meer
Still a mystery to me. In your logfile I see the line
used files 16: filename=AntykwaTorunska-Regular | filetype=otf |
format=otf |
foundname=R:/tex/texmf/fonts/opentype/public/antt/AntykwaTorunska-Regular.otf |
usedmethod=database
I therefore concluse in your system ConTeXt has found the reference for
\setupbodyfont[antykwa].

In my setup I have linked /Users/hans/TeX/context/tex/texmf-fonts to
/usr/local/texlive/2011/texmf-dist/fonts. The are all sorts of otf files
including those in public/antt.
On building with mtxrun --script fonts --reload I see in the log:
fonts | names | scanning /Users/hans/TeX/context/tex/texmf-fonts for
otf files
fonts | names | 47688 entries found, 528 otf files checked, 528 okay
My conclusion: these file should be in the database now.
Corroborated by mtxrun --script fonts --list --name antykwa -
antykwatorunskaregular antykwatorunskaregular AntykwaTorunska-Regular.otf

Still context run has in the log:
(/Users/hans/TeX/context/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/type-siz.mkiv)
(/Users/hans/TeX/context/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/type-otf.mkiv)
filesreadfile asked name: 'loc', not found
filesreadfile asked name: 'antykwa', not found
fontspreloading latin modern fonts (third stage)
{/Users/hans/TeX/context/tex/texmf/fonts/map/dvips/lm/lm-math.map}{/Users/hans/TeX/context/tex/texmf/fonts/map/dvips/lm/lm-rm.map}{/Users/hans/TeX/context/tex/texmf-context/fonts/map/pdftex/context/mkiv-base.map}
fontsvirtual math unable to resolve name mapsfromchar
fontsfallback modern rm 12pt is loaded

The latter shows that antykwa is not found in the context run but mtxrun did! I
am completely baffled.

My environment variables regarding TeX are:
export TEXLIVE=/usr/local/texlive/2011
export TEXMFHOME=$HOME/TeX/texmf
export CONTEXTROOT=$HOME/TeX/context/tex

Not booth are looking for the same thing: context looks for a typescript
definition, mtxrun for a font. I suspect your problem is not that the font is
not found, but that you are inadvertedly mixing the standalone context macros

Try removing the symlink in texmf-fonts, rerun mtxrun --script fonts --reload,

Which is already wrong, afaik. It should *not* be looking for a
typescript file, because the typescript 'antykwa' has already been set

up in type-otf.mkiv (it *did* load that file, I trust?).

You said: (all needed files are in the standalone distribution). But is it

Sure. As I wrote above, there should not *be* any typescript file, and
the actual fonts are named *antt*, not '*antykwa*'

And finally, the unexplained cambria crash?

Not looked at that yet, and it is usually unwise to attempt to fix two
problems at the same time, but my first guess in that case is simply
that you have not installed the font. I get:

$ mtxrun --script fonts --list --name cambria\* --all

cambria cambria cambria.ttc index: 1
cambriamath cambriamath cambria.ttc index: 0
cambriamathnormal cambriamath cambria.ttc index: 0
cambrianormal cambria cambria.ttc index: 1

$ luatools cambria.ttc
/home/taco/texmf/fonts/truetype/cambria.ttc

For the sake of completeness

Have you posted a full log yet? If not, perhaps that is wise (otherwise
I missed it).

I saw from your terminal output that your context version is from july and a

But why, isn't it in the distribution?

Because Microsoft is not in the habit of giving stuff away for free. As
with all commercial fonts, there is a simple rule: do not use the

I saw from your terminal output that your context version is from july and a

 \usetypescript[antykwa-torunska]
 \setupbodyfont[antykwa]

O, how wonderful is the internet-community. Indeed, that \usetypescript does
the trick. Thanks, one problem less here!
I guess from Wolfgang's comment that newer vrsions of ConTeXt can do without
the \usetypescript?

As for the cambria, I now see its name is has been typeset in boldface in the
font book. And that solves that problem also, because the font is not here.

no, it depends, as it's part of a fallback sequence:

(1) manually defined typeface - \usetypescript for relevant cases
(2) predefined typeface - automatically chosen
(3) when no typescript - loading type-typeface

etc

Is this book going to be available in the U.S.? If so, where can I find it?
If not, may I suggest that you upload your PDFs to CreateSpace.com and have
it made available to buyers through Amazon.com. I normally don't like
limiting a book's availability to a single reseller, but for a niche book it
makes sense. There is no cost to upload the book but an optional $39 fee
that reduces print costs dramatically. There is no inventory cost as books
are printed only when customers order copies. If multiple titles are to be
published, using Lightning Source may make more sense for serving the U.S.
market.

[NTG-context] Fonts in ConTeXt is now available from boekplan.com

2011-02-28 Thread Taco Hoekwater

After some delays, thankfully the book Fonts in ConTeXt is now
finally available for immediate ordering.

Fonts in ConTeXt describes how to define and use fonts in ConTeXt
MkIV. In this book, for the first time all existing documentation
related to fonts has been combined into a single document. In 128
pages, the reader is guided through everything there is to know about
fonts in ConTeXt MkIV. The earlier chapters deal with the theory behind
the font subsystem of ConTeXt and explain how to use the font switching
macros. The later chapters deal with defining fonts, for both single
(symbolic) fonts and complete typescripts for font families. Finally,
there are chapters on extending the ConTeXT font system and font
installation.

Fonts in ConTeXt costs 19 euro + pp, and can be ordered from

  http://www.boekplan.com/

Hans and I have decided that there will not be a free PDF version;
ordering a hardcopy is the only way to get this book. Please note
that besides receiving a useful book, you will also be sponsoring
ConTeXt development by doing so!

yes, but in this way less people will be interested, so less moneys
for developers, so less books,
so your collection will be small and with less value...

[NTG-context] Fonts in MKII

2010-12-12 Thread Tom
I am confused about using fonts in MKII. Which documentation provides the
best explanation and most accurate of how to use fonts in MKII. I am
particularly interested in using fonts that are bundled in Tex-Live. I will
leave bringing in other fonts till later when I understand the basics.

Here is the base problem. All other publishing related programs on my
 system will
  a) look in /usr/share/fonts and
 b) list the fonts fond there in a window when selecting fonts.

Laying aside b) for the moment it would be nice if some form of TeX
(preferably not LaTeX) would join the party and find Type1, TTF and OTF
fonts in the system standard location. Gimp does this, Scribus does
this, Inkscape does this, Open Office Writer does this and so on.
Luatex supposedly does this.  But getting Luatex to work on a new
standard distro , texlive 2010, seems to be a game of whackamole.
I tried comp.text.tex but when no one there seemed to have the right
answers and many of the names mentioned in the documentation were
gurus here I thought I would ask how to get the luatex business set
 up.

My goal is to use the stuff myself of course but also to describe how
to do it in a book I am writing on Free Publishing Software.  It does
not appear that Luatex is suitable for a newbie to set up. Remember,
the competition consists of programs where you download and install
the program and font finding is automatic. I write for an impatient
audience who want to have it all just work without a lot of
experimentation and fuss and feathers. There does not yet seem to be a
reliable single set of instructions for installing Luatex and setting
it up properly.  When there is I will revisit the program.

Thanks for helping and sorry to have wasted your time.
A bit off topic:
you can consider minimals  metatex.tex with mkiv (hence not texlive);
it should build a (sort of) plain tex with luatex .

See
tex/context/base/metatex.tex
but a bit of experience is required, I believe.

If you all what you want is plain TeX, then why you are looking for
ConTeXt solutions, I mean you don't need ConTeXt nor ConTeXt file
locating system (which does not use kpathsea) to use plain format.

The issue you have is because your ConTeXt MkIV is not properly
setup yet (true for fresh TeXLive 2010 installs). You need to run
`luatools -generate` to generate the file database (used to
locating files, similar to running texhash and likes, but TeXLive
scripts does not run it by default). Then you need to set your
system font paths, by setting OSFONTDIR, and ConTeXt will then be
 able find system fonts.

However, you don't need any of then to use system fonts with plain,
there are already packages for this (based on dome of ConTeXt code,
but adapted to be self contained and ConTeXt independent).

A small test file would be:

\input luaotfload.sty % works for plain despite the .sty
 \font\pagella={name:TeX Gyre Pagella:script=latn;+onum} at 10pt
 \font\termes={file:texgyretermes-regular.otf:script=latn} at 10pt
 \pagella some text 12345\par
 \termes other text
 \bye

This should work out of box on texlive (at first run it will take
some time building font database). If it does not work, it is a
 bug.

For LaTeX, just check fontspec documentation, and there is a
lualatex-dev list on CTAN, and luatex list for general, non-ConTeXt
 questions.

By default on Linux it will attempt to read /etc/fonts/fonts.conf and
detect system font directories, so /usr/share/fonts (and ~/.fonts)
should work, you can override this by explicitly setting OSFONTDIR, in
this case it will only search the specified directories (it is a
regular kpathsea variable).
