[NTG-context] minimals

2014-01-01 Thread Hans Hagen

Hi,

The current windows version on the garden is broken, so don't update for
a few days. The binaries will be fixed asap (but these are not the
easiest days for this kind of things).

Re: [NTG-context] minimals

2012-09-29 Thread Johan Sandblom
It is indeed somewhat complicated. Changes are needed in first-setup.sh
as well as in mtx-update.lua. To complicate matters, one of the first
things that happens in first-setup.sh is to retrieve a fresh and
unaltered mtx-update.lua. My naïve recipe follows:

1. change contextgarden.net to metatex.org on line 99 of first-setup.sh
2. run once, which fails, but updates mtx-update.lua
3. comment out line 99 of first-setup.sh, to prevent further updates of
scripts
4. change line 534 of mtx-update.lua to contain metatex.org instead of
contextgarden.net

run first-update.sh again, this time hopfully with success.

May I suggest that the version of mtx-update.lua that can be retrieved
from metatex.org contains references to that server and not
contextgarden.net. I realize that then it is no longer a mirror, but on
the other hand it may be useful when contextgarden is down.

One of these days the minimals repository will be moved to the machine
that runs the garden. After that we will change the scripts to find an
active mirror. (if you do have the basic bin dir alrwady you can use
another mirror with --server=...)

We have the binaries now (kindly contributed by Boris Veytsman). My
only question remains: how badly do you need ConTeXt to work *now*?

Until I set everything up, you have the following options:

1.) The binaries at http://www.tug.org/texlive/files/armel-linux-tl11/
should suffice to make a single-user installation of TeX Live 2011
which has a reasonable version of ConTeXt (not the latest one, but
it's a tested/patched release from early 2011). Karl says that
something like install-tl -custom-bin=whatever should work, but I
have never tested that.

2.) Adam Reviczky is maintaining some repositories at
https://code.launchpad.net/~reviczky/ (but it is not a single user
thing)

3.) You can copy a ConTeXt installation from whatever other platform
and just add the binaries from the link above. Some minor changes are
needed, but I speculate that if you set the path right, everything
should work out-of-the-box.

I'm asking about how badly because there will be a major
restructuring of everything sometime soon and I would not like to
spend too much time fixing the old infrastructure.

If I can accomplish this task, I would be glad to contribute to it.
For a long time I took advantage from other people in the open source
community. But what are the requirements?

1. You need to be able to compile TeX Live sources (now and preferably
at least once (or twice in case of problems) per year):
http://www.tug.org/texlive/build.html

2. You need to compile luatex and metapost:

- svn co http://svn.contextgarden.net/suite/build-binaries
- edit platform.sh (in case of problems or questions, please ask)
- run ./bin_update_src.sh, go to src/metapost and src/luatex and try
to build the two with ./build.sh

3. If you are able to accomplish both, our requirement/request would
be that you would be ready to keep building luatex and metapost on
regular basis. A while ago that meant twice per month. (At the moment
there has been no new release since July.) This means that whenever a
new version comes out, you are ready compile a new binary within a few
days.

I'm also CC-ing Boris Veytsman who used to be interested in compiling
TeX Live for arm.

Thank you very much for this report.

Just out of curiosity: how common are these processors? You are the
first one who asked and TeX Live doesn't ship the binaries for this
platform (http://tug.org/svn/texlive/trunk/Master/bin/).

If we want to support the architecture, we need somebody to build the
binaries on regular basis. And since you seem to be the first and

(I'm not sure if it is possible, but in case it is, another option is

Thank you, Wolfgang. Your table is most helpful. This can probably be found
in the documentation but not where I looked. This probably relates to the
recent discussion regarding manuals for novices.

My observation is that \completecontent and \completeindex are treated like
chapter starts in that 'Contents' and 'Index' are formatted as if they were
chapter titles.

Minimals don't contain *any* latex-related stuff (in ConTeXt you
cannot get rid of some plain TeX/LaTeX packages in any way), many
binaries are missing, minimals don't install modules by default, ...
But I still think that you can get a smaller installation than 660 MB
with TeX Live if you try hard enough.

On the other hand there are also some fonts that are missing in
ConTeXt distribution.

My PATH env var. has not a TeXLive or minimals path by default.
Every time I need a TeXLive or minimals, I open a shell and setup the its path

In this way I can work with different TeXLive and different minimals

[NTG-context] Minimals installation problem

2011-03-12 Thread Tom
After installing Minimals apparently successfully on a Windows Vista system,
I got the following messages when executing context hello:

MTXrun | resolvers: remembering file 'mtx-context.lua'
MTXrun | resolvers: using suffix based filetype 'lua'
MTXrun | unknown script 'context.lua' or 'mtx-context.lua'

The directory name, Context, is not longer than eight characters and has no
embedded spaces, so that should not be a problem. Executing texexec hello
works fine. However, I want to use MKIV not MKII. BTW, I chose the current
option to get a stable version.

What could be the problem?

tbibtex - /usr/local/texlive/2010/bin/x86_64-linux/bibtex

I guess that `luatex' is a problem.

Maybe the minimals could evolve slightly so that there be *no*
name conflicts with texlive except for ConTeXt itself, of course?
(It appears that pdfcrop gets broken through a confusion over luatex,
perhaps other texlive programs as well.)

The easiest thing for setuptex is to either rename the file (so that

set the path to binaries). However I'm aware that it already crashes

1.) Do you have any idea if there is some way to figure out that your

Did you modify setuptex to set the correct value for $TEXMFOS and $PATH.
This is what I do in the PKGBUILD for arch linux

 echo TEXMFOS=${_dest}/texmf-${_platform}$srcdir/tex/setuptex
 echo export TEXMFOS$srcdir/tex/setuptex
 echo $srcdir/tex/setuptex
 echo TEXMFCACHE=\$HOME/texmf-cache $srcdir/tex/setuptex
 echo export TEXMFCACHE $srcdir/tex/setuptex
 echo $srcdir/tex/setuptex

 echo $srcdir/tex/setuptex
 echo PATH=\$TEXMFOS/bin:\$PATH $srcdir/tex/setuptex
 echo export PATH $srcdir/tex/setuptex
 echo $srcdir/tex/setuptex
 echo OSFONTDIR=\$_userfontdir;$_osfontdir;\ \
 $srcdir/tex/setuptex
 echo export OSFONTDIR $srcdir/tex/setuptex

Here $_platform is either linux or linux-64, and $_dest is the
installation location, and (by default) $_userfontdir=\$HOME/.fonts and
$_osfontdir=/usr/share/fonts.

[NTG-context] Minimals/MTXrun: 32-bit system with 64-bit kernel: `MTXrun | no 'texmf-linux-64'`

2011-01-23 Thread Paul Menzel
Dear ConTeXt folks,

I am running a 32-bit system with a 64-bit kernel. So relying on

uname -m

to determine the architecture leads to problems [1].

So I do `cpu = i686` manually in `first-setup.sh` but I still do get
the the following error message.

When you want to use context, you need to initialize the tree by typing:

`first-setup.sh` executes the following command

# download or update the distribution
# you may remove the --context=beta switch if you want to use current
mtxrun --verbose --script ./bin/mtx-update.lua --update --make --force
--engine=all --context=beta --platform=$platform --texroot=$PWD/tex $@

but `mtxrun` or `mtx-update.lua` does not seem to honor the option `--platform`
all the way.

I tried to even hardcode `platform` to `linux` in `mtxrun` but it does not
help.¹

elseif name == linux then

  function os.resolvers.platform(t,k)
-- we sometims have HOSTTYPE set so let's check that first
  local platform, architecture = , os.getenv(HOSTTYPE)
or os.resultof(uname -m) or
  if find(architecture,x86_64) then
  platform = linux-64
  elseif find(architecture,ppc) then
  platform = linux-ppc
  else
  platform = linux
  end
  os.setenv(MTX_PLATFORM,platform)
  os.platform = platform
→ return linux
  end

Could you please tell me, where the path for the `texmf` directory is
determined and how I can force that to a certain platform.

Thanks,

Paul

OK. If I'm the only user it's not that important to make it run just for me.

It means no extra work for us as long as someone is using it and as
long as someone keeps compiling LuaTeX when a new version comes out,
else ConTeXt stops working.

That someone could theoretically be me, but if my binaries don't work
on other machines, it makes no sense for me to compile the binaries,
so that someone would probably have to be you.

The question is: is these because there's LuaTeX beta-0.61.0 instead
of the latest LuaTeX available or is it because my virtual machine

Can you please send me the binaries (or at least the LuaTeX one)
off-list (or if you could upload it to some place, so that I could
download it from there), so that I can test if your binaries work on
my virtual machine? If nothing else out of pure curiosity.

After having a look at the
first-setup.sh script I performed the mtxrun ... line. As expected it failed

Just a remark: the way to install minimals is soon going to change a
bit (I won't delete the old scripts straight away, but I will try to
change a few aspects of installation).

 - To update the system I can use the following command, right?
mtxrun --verbose --script ./bin/mtx-update.lua --force --engine=luatex
  --texroot=$PWD/tex --extras=all

 use of all the options.

That is fine. But as long as the old luatex resides on computer, you
should better not use the --make switch

How can I check the luatex version used in the minimals?

It's 0.61. At the moment you can see
http://minimals.contextgarden.net/current/bin/solaris-intel/luatex/
but that might change.

Btw.: does TeX Live 2010 work OK on your server? (It would be helpful
to know. ConTeXt should work OK there.)

 Maybe it is saved
in some text file. Background: If the luatex version changes my script needs
to fetch the new trunk, compile and replace the »buggy or incompatible«
binary. Simply getting the binary and execute --version triggers the error
 mentioned before.

We should just get a working version to the server and then you would
not need any special hacks.

Thanks for your help. If I can do anything (send binaries, etc.) let me know.

I would be grateful for the binaries and specification of your server.

i've been using this for a quite some time now:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/console/

it is much faster in scrolling the log; it captures the output and
flushes periodically contrary to the normal console which flushes each
char and as tex often writes char by char ...; other os's use delays in
the refresh in consoles so there it's less noticeable

Hans, for LaTeX and plain TeX we use hyph-grc.tex for XeTeX/LuaTeX and

one needs a special conversion; you probably had some conversion for

The fastest quick-and-dirty fix is to replace the contents of

cp lang-us.pat lang-agr.pat
and then manually rebuild the patterns with
texexec --make en

Hi all,

I can confirm the same issue here: actually after the update, mkiv works fine
and reports the following versions:
LuaTeX version 61, LuaTeX revision 0, (LuaTeX date stamp 2010072817),
ConTeXt version 2010.08.02 18:58.

However mkii is broken: the command

It seems to have been fixed in the meantime. I just tried it again and
rsync worked fine. The crash still happened, so I deleted the texmf-mswin
directory and let rsync refetch it, and now that works too. So it seems my
context on win64 runs fine again. No idea what caused the problem, but at
least it works now :)

Thanks for taking a look!

Andreas.

[NTG-context] Minimals without rsync - again?

2010-07-28 Thread Richard Stephens
Hi all,

On the wiki at http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_Minimals/FAQ is says:

Blocked Firewall port
You are most probably behind a firewall. Make sure that port 873 is
open. If you cannot make any changes yourself and if your admin
objects, you probably won't be able to use rsync for the
distribution.

Yes, I am behind a firewall. No, port 873 is not open. No, I cannot
make any changes, and yes, my admin objects :-(
So what's the alternative to using rsync? I used to use the zip file
at http://www.pragma-ade.com/download-4.htm but that doesn't exist any
more!

I've now managed to screw up my MKIV installation somehow, so I
desperately need some way of getting the beta release re-installed
without rsync.

Help!!

There is also

Maybe it doesn't contain the latest ConTeXt, but at least it should
work (I can update it at any time, but I have a feeling that it now
contains the latest stable release).

An alternative is to use ssh port forwarding, but I'm not sure how
this can be done (there have already been some discussions about that,
so it must be somewhere in archives).

I used to update to the latest beta using download-2, but it doesn't
contain new binaries and dll's etc.

 There is also

Maybe it doesn't contain the latest ConTeXt, but at least it should
work (I can update it at any time, but I have a feeling that it now
 contains the latest stable release).

At the above address, there is a .zip file called mswin.zip which
appears to contain binaries etc (dated 28-May-2010). Plus another one
called mswincontext.zip which presumably contains everything else
(dated 17-April-2008). How would I make use of these to install the
full distribution?

What would be really nice is a .zip file containing EVERYTHING needed
to install ConTeXt for the latest stable release
AND another .zip (produced, say, once a month) with the changes since
the stable release!
Or failing that, just a big .zip file with everything in it once a month or so.
I can dream!

An alternative is to use ssh port forwarding, but I'm not sure how
this can be done (there have already been some discussions about that,

I've tried to understand all the ssh stuff in the mail archive and

mswincontext is not what it's supposed to be. One should install
justtex.zip and mswin.zip ... but something must be wrong since I see
now that justtex contains some windows binaries (which it shouldn't).

I've uploaded:

www.pragma-ade.com/context/install/minimals-snapshots-common.7z
www.pragma-ade.com/context/install/minimals-snapshots-mswin.7z
www.pragma-ade.com/context/install/minimals-snapshots-linux.7z
www.pragma-ade.com/context/install/minimals-snapshots-linux-64.7z
www.pragma-ade.com/context/install/minimals-snapshots-ox-intel.7z

making zips with changes is a no-go for several reasons

- it costs me too much time to do that while most users can use rsync
and the garden
- uploading from here should happen in reasonable time (a few minutes at
most)

so, i can upload occasionally those zips (and probably need to be
reminded every now and then) and it will be the latest then (it being
current of beta)

Re: [NTG-context] Minimals without rsync - again?

2010-07-28 Thread Martin Althoff
As I am working in China at the moment, rsync only works sporadically (super
slow, possibly not at all for a couple of days, then at high speed for a day or
two), kind of soft blocked. Having clobbered my installation of minimals (and
other things) because of it,

Not a solution, but a crutch: zip up the whole minimals folder before running
rsync. For me that's just under 130MB. Date the file, keep a few...

Maybe the now suggested solution will work for me sometime in the future.
Currently I am on holiday outside of China. rsync works like a charm in
Indonesia.

Easy fix: in mtx-update.lua, line 294 the current check is
if osplatform == windows or osplatform == mswin then
which should also check for mswin-64.

No, we don't have any special 64-bit binaries for windows. So it
should always unconditionally recognize windows as mswin, no matter
whether they are 32- or 64-bit.

But even after fixing that, mtxrun fails at several points, because it
tries to run further commands from tex/texmf-mswin-64.

Another easy fix: add a hardlink/junction for that directory.
But that only ended in the following error whenever I invoke mtxrun,
 texlua, etc.:

 texlua.exe - Application Error
The application was unable to start correctly (0xc022). click OK to
 close the application.

I don't know why that was changed, but afaik all 64bit versions of windows
support 32bit too so I would vote to leave it as it was before - just deal
with mswin-64 as if it was mswin.

The problem is that I'm not able to reproduce the problem you are
reporting. Did anyone else experience the same problem?

Hi Hans,

I just updated to the latest minimal, and everything works perfectly on my
MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.6.3.
I get:
LuaTeX version 60, LuaTeX revision 1, (LuaTeX date stamp 2010042810),
ConTeXt version 2010.06.15 17:06.

I haven't noticed any kerning problems with the usual fonts I use, and the
issue reported by Thomas S. doesn't show up for me.

However, I notice that the version I have runs much faster than the previous
ones, especially in mkii mode: is this because you have done something magic,
or am I being too tired and slow minded? :-)

In any case, many many thanks…

Best regards: OK

No, because Debian has Debian-specific dependencies.

But Alan already compiled the binaries and sent the link to TL

TL team whether they will add the platform or not.

[NTG-context] minimals: kfreebsd-i686 (debian)

2010-01-26 Thread Alan BRASLAU
Hello,

I just installed kfreebsd-i686 Debian/GNU. It is now officially supported as
core architecture by Debian as an alternative to the linux kernel, but is not
yet supported by the ConTeXt minimals.

luatex 0.50.0-1 is available as a standard debian package on this
architecture.

I downloaded luatex/trunk from svn and it compiles and runs correctly:
$ build/texk/web2c/luatex --version
This is LuaTeX, Version beta-0.50.0-2010012620

Who should I contact (or will contact me) to see about adding this
architecture to the minimals distribution?

Alan

Me, but I won't be online until Thursday and even then I'll be 100%

Try to do
   svn co http://svn.contextgarden.net/minimals-src/build-binaries
try to fix platform.sh and then run do_all.sh (but before that comment
out the line that tries to commit the binaries). Once you do that,
you'll be able to commit the binaries after I adapt code at a few
places. Also, we need to agree on platform name.

[NTG-context] Minimals installation problem OS X 10.6.2

2010-01-16 Thread paul morgan
Hi,

On a new Snow Leopard machine, I ran ./first-setup.sh in ~/context.

As instructed at the end of the ./first-setup.sh run, I then
added /Users/pm/context/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin to my .zshenv, and % echo $PATH
shows correct path when I source, logout, restart, etc.

I ran:

p% texexec example.tex
MTXrun | kpse fallback with progname 'context' initialized in 0.001019
seconds

I then tried

p% luatex sample.tex
This is LuaTeX, Version beta-0.50.0-2009122423
 \write18 enabled.

kpathsea: Running mktexfmt luatex.fmt
mktexfmt: No such file or directory
I can't find the format file `luatex.fmt'!

Any suggestions on what I should do?

Also, first-setup.sh creates the dir ...tex/texmf-osx-64/bin, but,

p% uname -m
i386

Thank you very much for any help you can offer.

Minimals doesn't ship with plain format, only context. If you want
ConTeXt MkIV then run 'context file.tex' (which can process plain tex
files as well, but I don't know how far compatible is it).

AFAIK, you actually need to add

source /Users/pm/context/tex/setuptex

to your .zshrc file rather than adding the path. (The path might also
work, but I have never tried it. I use source setuptex in my setup.)

[NTG-context] Minimals and XeTeX

2010-01-11 Thread Vedran Miletić
Hi,

I'm a new user of ConTeXt and minimals distribution and first I would
like to say to thank everyone involved in it. Like most LaTeX users, I
found something that was very hard to do in LaTeX to be fairly trivial
in ConTeXt, and gave it a shot.

Nevertheless, there is an issue with missing files that might be
relevant and worth noting here. When compiling with --xtx, texexec (or
xdvipdfmx) warns about missing dvipdfmx.cfg (that should, according to
TeX Live structure, be in texmf/dvipdfmx/dvipdfmx.cfg), and once you
manually add that, about missing cid-x.map
(texmf/fonts/map/dvipdfmx/cid-x.map). After adding both files, there
are no more complains.

Can those files be added to minimals distribution?

I can add two empty files if that will make people happier. It's a
useless warning that makes no difference for ConTeXt.

If you can connect to a machine on the outside world

 Alan,

thanks a lot for figuring that out. This should be documented on Wiki

Just a question: what kind of server exactly does that proxyhost need to
 be?

The proxyhost can be any machine outside of the ssh firewall that
1) has nc (netcat)
2) allows a connection to port 873 (rsync)
