 After an update about one hour ago, I just had the same error with a
 cite command inside a footnote. Removing the command to put it in the
 text has the error vanish.  

That shouldn't happen. But no example, no cure.

Awfully right!
I tried a minimal example, no more error, then I tried again on my whole
file, no more error!
(some mystery remains anyway in my mind...)

I am trying ConTeXt with XeTeX and after processing the file I got  
this message:
