FYI: I have had similar problems with the grid. I set a portion of my book in a different typeface to simulate a hand-written letter. With the grid on, the lines in the alternate typeface are spaced quite widely ("double space?"). It seems to be related to the size or x-height of the alternate font. If different than the size of the body font, things go awry.
