Under MacTex or TexLive, not sure which one, on my 10.4.11 system, my setup

 that dir to  ~/context/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/user

I'm not trying to answer your question, but that is a bad idea since
your files will get overwritten the first time when you synchronize
with --delete (which might even be the default switch).

You should better put your files to
~/context/tex/texmf-local/tex/context/user

The texmf.cnf files now includes
 TEXMFHOME = $HOME/texmf
but maybe we could add $HOME/Library/texmf to the list as well. Any
objections to that? (I just need to figure out how to properly nest
the braces.)

I would prefer $HOME/Library/texmf.

otr texmf-project if it's a project tree

only mac i assume

i wonder what happens if someone has another tex installed then so maybe
make it an option somehow .. of just considere it not-done for

the minimals

True, but it should be harmless if the folder doesn't exist on some other OS.

TeX is supposed to be installed somewhere else (by default), not in
$HOME/texmf. People who do have those folders present usually know
what they are doing. Not all of them, but some random newbie would not
create a folder there.

There have been several complaints about missing TEXMFHOME and no
complaints about its presence since the time when we have added it
(must be a few months at least).

Did you run mktexlsr (for MkII) or luatools --generate (for MkIV)?

Thank you, after running luatools --generate, the files are found. The
command context (i.e. MkIV) is now finding errors with my setup files
which were created, and have always been used, under MkII - I get !
Undefined control sequence at \definelogo plus other errors.

After mktexlsr, MkII works as expected.

Is there a reference for commands/definitions which work in MkII but not in
MkIV?

Thanks again for your help,

Paul

In general, it is not a good idea to place your files in texmf-context
tree. They will get deleted when you update context-minimals. You can
create a folder ~/context/tex/texmf-local and store your own files in a
tex/context/anything subdirectory there.
