The x86_64-darwinlegacy from that download link version has fixed the problem
on the Mac. Thank-you all involved.

\startformula

Maybe. I picked up the binary, but testing it is not quite as easy as it might
be due to the MacOS security settings. I’ll see what I can do, but I know very
little about Unix/Darwin.

Since this appears to be an issue across multiple platforms, I’d welcome anyone

Re: [NTG-context] Spacing in \unit - SOLVED

2022-10-21 Thread Gavin via ntg-context
Hi Hans,

> I'll look into it (with Mikael as some relates to math) once you're done
> playing and provide suggestions and tests.

I’m done playing. Below are tests and suggestions. Sorry it has taken so long
for me to put this together.

Tests
I attached two test files. The first, units-spacing.tex, is for testing spacing
for \unit used in text, inline math, and display math. The second,
units-linebreaks.tex, tests line breaks when \unit. is used in text or in
inline math. Line breaks were not my primary interest, but Max and Alan were
quite interested. My proposed fixes for spacing also fix their concerns about
line breaks.I tried to make these tests match the style of the Test Suite. They
could be included there if they are useful.

Suggestions
I attached my my modified phys-dim.mkxl. All of my changes are commented and
signed with -GP to make them easy to find. Below are comments on the five
issues I addressed (not including line breaks). The first four of these are
fixes.I don’t think any of these fixes are controversial or require new
options. The fifth, regarding the space around the \times in scientific
notation, might be an appropriate option, rather than a universal fix.

1. The \cdot in units should not have space around it.
These lines produce the \cdot between units, one is for the default \cdot, the
other when the separator=cdot option is used. I’m not entirely sure why they
are separate. Now, in math mode, the \cdot is changed to an ord. (ll. 392-393)

\protected\def\phys_units_separator

{\ifcsname\??unitseparator\unitparameter\c!separator\endcsname\lastnamedcs\else\ifmmode\mathord\cdot\else\cdot\fi\fi}
% Made \cdot an "ord" in math mode -GP

\installunitsseparator\v!normal{\ifmmode\mathord\cdot\else\cdot\fi} % Made
\cdot an "ord" in math mode -GP

2. Space is needed between number and units
To get the thin space between the number and the units (ll.412-418)

\protected\def\phys_units_space
 {\ifmmode
\thinspace % let the atoms do the work. Right now atoms aren't doing the
work, so I put in a \thinspace -GP
  \else
\unskip % weird, why is unskip needed

\ifcsname\??unitspace\unitparameter\c!space\endcsname\lastnamedcs\else\unitsmediumspace\fi
  \fi}

3. Space is needed after the units, before the next relation, binary operator,
etc. Right now there seems to be no space added between the new dimension class
and the relation and binary operator class. Until the space around the
dimension class is fixed, The units should not be assigned to the dimension
class, which means removing the code that sets units to this class. (ll.
618-623)

\def\phys_units_start
 {\ifmmode
\dostarttagged\t!maction\t!unit
% \mathatom % I removed this because the correct spaces after dim haven't
been set (e.g. dimbin, dimrel) -GP
%\s!leftclass \mathdimensioncode
%\s!rightclass \mathdimensioncode
\bgroup
  \else
\dostarttagged\t!unit\empty
  \fi
  \let\phys_units_finish\phys_units_stop
  \let\phys_units_start\relax}

4. Remove hardcoded backspace before the solidus in units. (If this space
should be tighter, it probably should be dealt with for every solidus, not just
the solidus in \unit the unit command.) (ll.412-418)

\permanent\protected\def\unitsSOLIDUS
{%\ifnum\c_phys_units_state=\plusone % suffix % Removed three lines to
eliminate backspace before / -GP
  % \unitsbackspace
  %\fi
  {/}%
  }%\unitsbackspace}

5. I think the \times in scientific notation should not have extra space.
Everyone who commented on the mailing list agreed. However, I’m not sure that
this is a universal desire, so it might be good to add an options, like
scispace=normal for the usual binop space around the \times and scispace=tight
for no extra space around \times. The changed line in phys-dime.mkxl used to
add space around the \times in text. Now, instead, it removes the space around
the \times in math by making the \times an ord. (ll. 170-172)

\permanent\protected\def\digitstextbinop#1% assumes preceding
{\ifmmode\mathord#1\else\nobreak#1\fi} % Removed space around binop (\times or
\cdot) in \units -GP
 %{\ifmmode#1\else\fourperemspace\nobreak#1\fourperemspace\fi} % This is the
old line with spaces -GP

Those are my five suggestions. Thanks for looking at spacing in \units!

Gavin

That is a terrific solution that doesn’t require any messing with

Will 135\unit{℃} ever break between the digits 135 and the "unit"?
I agree that \unit should probably use an \mbox to prevent unwanted
breaks.

The other role of \unit, I understand, is to uniformize the
representation of numbers (digits).

So ℃ needs to be registered as a degree and prevent any spacing.

Why would one not want a (small) space before m/s in the above

Thank four your effort. I found out, that the following definition of a new

Maybe this can be used to solve it easier in the code. I will have a look at

According to “Scientific Style and Format: The CSE Manual for Authors, Editors,
and Publishers, 8th Ed.” by the Council of Science Editors:

> The symbol for degrees Celsius, ℃ (not simply C), is separated from the

As a recovering string theorist, I cannot help but speculate that this rule
extends to spherical coordinates in any number of dimensions. However, if you
don’t want the space, you can use 135\unit{℃}, which does not add a space.

> Also,
> \unit{135°C} drops the "C". Is this a parsing bug?

It is not a parsing bug; it is a limitation. In general, units must be spelled
out (newton, joule, etc.) which produces the correct SI symbol (N, J, etc.).
Some units are also recognized by their symbols (m, s, kg,…). Celsius is
recognized by the single character “℃” and by the name “celsius”, but not by
the two character combination “°C”. Probably, the parser could be expanded to
recognize the two character combination. That requires mucking around in
phys-dim.lua, which I’m not going to touch.

Use \unit{135 celsius} if you want the space, and 135\unit{celsius} if you
don’t. Or you can add your favorite abbreviations:

\registerunit[
  °C=°C,
  ]
\setupunittext[
  °C=℃,
  ]

Then use \unit{135°C} if you want the space and 135\unit{°C} if you don’t.

> Related,
> \unit{90°} does not seem to introduce a space, as indeed it should not.

Also related, using \unit for just the units, and not the number, is useful
when they follow something that is not a number, like a vector: $ \vec v =
(4.0, -3.2, 1.5)\unit{m/s} $. You frequently do not want a space in that
situation.

Now that I’ve had this success messing with other people’s code, I’ve got your
luagraph module on my mind.

I haven’t adjusted the space directly. I just changed the \times and \cdot from
class binom to class ord. I’m not going to tweak the space. I don’t even use
this font. With proportional numbers in Libertinus, I think the \times looks
great.

PastedGraphic-5.pdf

With tabular numbers, the \times looks a bit off center due to the extra space
around the following 1.

It was intentional. I didn’t add space. I removed a backspace in the \unit code.

Below I list all of my changes to the phys-dim.mkxl code, with some commentary.
I have added comments in the code everywhere I made a change, and I signed the
changes with -GP, so they are easy to find.

Thanks for your encouragement, because my high school physics students
certainly do not give a s#!t.

I hope some people find this useful!

This used to add space around the \times in text. Now, instead, it removes the
space around the \times in math by making the \times an ord. (ll. 170-172)

\permanent\protected\def\digitstextbinop#1% assumes preceding
  {\ifmmode\mathord#1\else\nobreak#1\fi} % Removed space around binop (\times
or \cdot) in \units -GP
  %{\ifmmode#1\else\fourperemspace\nobreak#1\fourperemspace\fi} % This is the
old line with spaces -GP

These lines produce the \cdot between units, one is for the default \cdot, the
other when the separator=cdot option is used. I’m not entirely sure why they
are separate. Now, in math mode, the \cdot is changed to an ord. (ll. 392-393

\protected\def\phys_units_separator

{\ifcsname\??unitseparator\unitparameter\c!separator\endcsname\lastnamedcs\else\ifmmode\mathord\cdot\else\cdot\fi\fi}
% Made \cdot an "ord" in math mode -GP

\installunitsseparator\v!normal{\ifmmode\mathord\cdot\else\cdot\fi} % Made

   \fi}

This had a hardcoded backspace before the solidus. I think it looks better
without. Even if this space should be tighter, it probably should be dealt with
for every solidus, not just the solidus in \unit the unit command. (ll.412-418)

Finally, until the space around the dimension class is fixed, I’m just removing
the code that sets units to this class. (ll. 618-623)

Re: [NTG-context] Spacing in \unit - degrees

2022-10-12 Thread Alan Braslau via ntg-context
Further \unit question(s):

\unit{135℃} adds a space after the digits 135.
I do not believe that this is correct
(for ℃ is *not* a "real" unit, unlike \unit{408.15 K} which *is* a real
unit).

Also,
\unit{135°C} drops the "C". Is this a parsing bug?

Related,
\unit{90°} does not seem to introduce a space, as indeed it should not.

This new output looks *much* better than the old one, thanks!

My only comment is that the spacing around the multiplication sign looks
a little too tight to me. The original spacing was probably too large,
but I think that a little more space than you currently have would be
better.

This new spacing looks much more even to me, especially around the

Gavin (and the mailing list),

I would very strongly argue that the space between the number and the
following units be UNBREAKABLE. Perhaps a thin space (preference), but
most certainly non-breakable.

Similarly around the times in scientific notation.

I further cannot imagine that a line break be acceptable around a \cdot
in composite units.

This can possibly lead to overfill and underfill, something that I find
*infinitely* more acceptable then breaking numbers and units.

I too would prefer less space around the times e.g. \starttext 3.00×10\high{8}
\stoptext is fine (except for the 8 which is nicer in \unit).

maybe we also need to add units (are there new ones anyway?)

The dot between “kg” and “m” has different spacing depending on whether the

Finally, \unit does not play nicely with surrounding spaces. For example:

Re: [NTG-context] Spacing issue in itemize

2022-01-14 Thread Gavin via ntg-context
Hi Hans, Aditya, and all,

Let me add another case to this discussion. For multiple choice questions, it
is nice to have the columns option. However, this produces somewhat
inconsistent results. In the code below, without Aditya's tweak, there is space
before the choices in the first two cases, which use columns, but not the last.
Aditya’s tweak makes them more consistent.

Adding [columns, one] to the last \startchoices makes the results consistent.
When doing that, I noticed that the spacing between column rows is slightly
larger than the spacing between items without columns. So, I am happy using
[columns, one] as a solution for multiple choice problems, just somewhat
surprised by the difference.

Note that in the first case, the inbetween does not get inserted at the start
of the nested itemization (because, ConTeXt doesn't think that they are nested
as the names are different). But the before key of the nested itemization
doesn't get inserted in both cases because ConTeXt thinks that the itemization
is nested!

You can change this behavior by using:

\unprotect
\c_strc_itemgroups_spacing_mode\plusone
\protect

in which case both outputs are similar.

@Hans: Does it make sense to add a setups key to \setupitemize to keep such
changes local?

% 0 = before/after
% 1 = between unless before
% 2 = between

\c_strc_itemgroups_spacing_mode\plustwo

The question then is: "what key" (we have c!inherit available) and "what

Thank you again, Aditya!

I changed my documents so I use three levels of question, which solved the
problem.

My code might be more readable if the different levels had different names
(question, part, subpart), rather than nested questions in questions. This was
my original intention. I was certainly surprised by the result.

Now I’m moving on to the problem set's diagrams with MetaFun.

Thanks again David! IIRC, I did find one solution this way. I think the
biggest challenge with this approach is, as you mention, learning the best
search keywords. I think that should improve over time.

Thanks David!

I don't think I've ever been quite so frustrated at trying to

ago). But I'm slogging away and it's gradually coming together
(I think). I spent my whole day yesterday figuring out how to
do some very basic formatting/layout that would have taken 5-10

And thanks David for this explanation of the situation.

You may already be doing what I'm about to suggest. If so, please
disregard.

One source that has helped me a lot is the archive of this mailing
list, where I've searched for any messages that mention whatever
it is that I'm looking for. Of course such a search is slower than
scrolling through the index of a manual, and sometimes it's hard
to figure out "What keyword do I search on? If I knew the correct
keyword, I'd be done this already!" - but quite often I've "hit
the jackpot" and found exactly what I needed, or close enough that
I only had to change some details.

You will soon notice that there are some people on the list who
consistently see through the problems that are presented, and who
say something like "I think you probably want something like
this:" - followed by a solution that makes you say confidently
"A-ha! So THAT'S how that's done!".

The really good problem-solving sessions on the list, both the
elegant answers and the questions that precede them, could form a
pretty good start on a manual. Of course such a method is
hit-or-miss, but in this case there are quite a few hits. Just
watch out (in much older messages) that you're not fully relying
on an answer based on ConTeXt Mk II, because many of those
solutions no longer work in the newer versions.

... which has accidentally led me to another documentation
comment. Hans's programming philosophy is not something I'm an
expert on, but it seems clear that he values "usability, good
function, and getting the job done well" much higher than he
values "backward compatibility forever". In other words, if
something is broken or not good enough, he doesn't hesitate to fix
it or improve it in the best way he can see. This is good for the
software in that it is constantly improving in every direction,
but it does also make it a bit more of a challenge to document,
and a bit more of a challenge to find someone who *wants* to
document it - "How ConTeXt Used To Work Last Year" is clearly not
going to be a top-selling title. :) But despite that, the majority
of what you want to know has not changed in quite some time, and
usually only *very* old solutions will fail completely.

I want to finish this message by saying: When you read through
"SomeFile.tex" that you've created, every switch and command in it
should make sense to you. In the beginning that might not always
be the case, but it's easier for you to get there than it might
sound, and you'll see that all the best solutions you get from
others share that quality of "Ah, I see, that makes sense, I get
how this works". Most of the time, a solution that doesn't give
you that feeling is not quite the right way to do it. Of course a
poor solution is better than nothing, but please don't stay
satisfied with hairy-looking clusters of commands that sort of
work but no one knows why. (I've written lots of those, that's why
I say this.) :) Simple and direct writing means the mistakes will
soon become obvious; the worst thing to do in ConTeXt is to make a
complicated mysterious mistake that you can't even find.

Well. THAT turned out longer than I intended. :)

Even if I did plan an English version, I don’t think it will happen... First I
need to complete the German version.

It’s easier in Word (or LibreOffice) than in InDesign, true.
Never tried to make an index in LO/Word.

But ToCs in word processors tend to get messed up, as other stuff like image
placement.

It’s at least possible to make it efficient.

I never use XML input but mostly convert DOCX to ConTeXt and work in that.

My main job ATM is with technical documentation on a specialized LaTeX3 system:
several similar machines, several translations, i.e. modularity pays off.

At a former job (newspaper prepress admin) I prepared training material on
Acrobat Pro using ConTeXt; presentations and handouts in the same documents,
using modes.

All the best,

Yes, this has been kind of frustrating too. It's certainly challenged my

Yes, this is exactly what I've found in just about everything labeled
"beginner" or "basic" for ConTeXt documentation. Maybe it would be "beginner"
for someone who already knows some other typesetting code... The best beginner
thing I found was Willi Egger's "ConTeXt for Beginners" (TUGboat, Volume 38
(2017), No. 3). Only it's too short! And I think my own background in
HTML/CSS made it easier than it would be for someone who comes from an
average-Word-user background.

Yes, that at least is a consolation!

Haha! I now work with Jan Willem Flamma (who is on this list) in the training
industry. He tells me that using ConTeXt with XML will give us a modularity to
our training content such that a modification in one place is more or less
automatically taken care of for every course manual that uses that content.
(At least that's my current understanding.) So I've been trying to learn
ConTeXt and now slowly chipping away at coding one of our smaller homework
chapters.

Oh interesting! I've always found it very helpful. Probably, I haven't
attempted the more advanced features/coding. ??

Most of you know I’m writing at this German ConTeXt book since years...
I use the incomplete version myself a lot, and I very much hope that at least
every second German TeX user will buy it ;)

And of course it’s a lot of work – while Hans, Wolfgang and Taco (and a few
otehrs) know their code, I must look up every option, try to find a short
description or come up with a test case, so that I understand what’s going on
to write it down for others. (Often parallelly for the book in Germand and for
the wiki in English.)
And far too often I give up because I can’t make something work – mostly
because I didn’t understand some fundamental concept (expansion...), but
sometimes features just don’t work as advertised/documented (like columnsets).

Googling is necessary and helpful for LaTeX, but there aren’t so many blog or
forum entries about ConTeXt.

I think it doesn’t make a lot of sense to try to understand the whole thing at
once.
You need to start small with a project and some basic structuring, then add
your style requirements one after the other.

If you come from a layout background like me, some “advanced“ stuff is really
easy in ConTeXt, while seemingly basic stuff is very hard.
The mindset of a command-based typesetting system is fundamentally different
from that of a layout program or word processor – even if you can do a lot of
the same tasks with each.

A typesetting system like ConTeXt is as much a tool for professionals as a
layout program like InDesign. And even a word processor is better used by
professionals who understand what they’re doing.

Each system is also usable by beginners (TeX not so much) – but they can’t
expect to get professional results immediately.

With TeX, footnotes, ToCs and indexes are beginner stuff, while they’re quite
advanced with InDesign or Word. Styling your work is much easier in a visual
programm – while you do it manually.

For ConTeXt you need on one hand the mindset of a programmer, on the other hand
that of a media designer.
Using LaTeX you can choose a readymade style (class), but with ConTeXt you
define your own – it’s easier, but still challenging.

I think ConTeXt has a similar problem as Objective C: It might be superior to
C++, but every introduction into ObjC assumes you are familiar with ANSI C or
C++. But if ObjC is so great, why should I bother learning the other?
Most ConTeXt users used LaTeX or plain TeX before. They have to re-learn a lot,
but they know a bit about how TeX thinks and works, and they know the
limitations of LaTeX.
There is more beginner level documentation for ConTeXt than for ObjC, but we
still assume a basic familiarity with TeX and principles of design and
typography.

With my book I’m trying to start without prior knowledge, even if I know most
of my readers will come from LaTeX.
But I still include sections about working on the command line or choosing a
text editor and a lot of basic design/typography knowledge. I want it to really
enable someone with usual office experience to start with ConTeXt. On the other
hand I’d like to show what’s possible and what I find interesting.

And that leads to:

I started out maybe a little bit hodge-podge, looking through some
documentation recommended to me. The basic concept is very straightforward.
No problem. But implementation has been extremely challenging (but it's
probably just me!). Then I was pointed to Henri Menke's "Definitive Guide"
post. I read the entire Excursion (though I confess I did not *practice* as I
went along (partly because SciTe was such a pain)). The Excursion is not for
(true) beginners. And, no offense, but I thought it was poorly typeset as
well...

Then I went through Aditya's "amazing tutorial" (mostly with a good bit of help

at the end I felt like it was mostly an exercise in "slow-motion copy/paste" (I
retyped all the code). Of course, when I got the code right, I got the
intended output. I did fiddle with options a little bit as I went. No doubt,
I should have done more. There was too much of what I had "successfully" done
that I still didn't really understand at the end of it.

This is more general than about "my specific problem". There have been a
number of different ones. They are all basic formatting/layout. I've resorted
to asking about a couple of them on the mailing list after no joy anywhere else.

Off the top of my head, I would suggest more explanation/description and
especially more examples of what each option/key/whatever does. I've always
found w3chools.com to be especially helpful with HTML/CSS because they give
plenty of examples and explanation.

I don't know if it's really feasible to do anything about it but another thing
is the jargon. I probably mainly think in terms of HTML/CSS lingo and then MS
Word. When I hunt through the wiki or the manuals or Google for solutions, I
naturally use the terms I know. But it seems that the things I've wanted are
referred to differently in ConTeXt. I spent *days* trying to figure out how to
add more whitespace around a floated graphic (the default is too cramped in my
opinion). I finally just threw up my hands and decided that no one else has
this opinion but me so nobody has ever "fixed" it and thus, no solution exists.

Mike, I know how you feel. The reasons that the documentation is
so sparse and difficult to find are the same reasons behind a lot
of things: time, money, and ability. Good documentation requires
all three of those things to be brought together at the same time.
Some people reading and responding here have two out of the three,
but it's rare to find someone who has all three at the same time.

On second thought, there are at least five things required: time,
money, ability, desire, and a workable plan. And with ConTeXt
being developed by a relatively tiny group, even if a brilliant
and kind organizer came along and said "I want excellent
documentation for ConTeXt, and I'll pay a fortune to the person
who knows how to write it - see, here's the money" - there's no
way of guaranteeing that someone would actually take the offer.

>> David

Indeed. It's all volunteer work that doesn't pay the bills. Sitting down
and starting to write a big manual simply doesn't pay off so it has to
happen in free time. And that being the case, it is more attactive to
work on some new challenge.

Concerning manuals: I sometimes wonder if they are really read. So, how
to set up one that works for all, build up explanations, etc ... isn't
it more about googling a solution nowadays (ok, not entirely true i
guess, as one then has to learn how to distinguish the wrong solutions
from the good, but i suppose one can just test it).

It has been said before: one can have manuals, wikis, mailing lists,
journals ... once they cross the beginners level they also become large
and hard to navigate. One can have 'beginners' and 'advanced' but who
wants to be a 'beginner' ... when is the line crossed. Maybe on the wiky
we should actually have that distinction.

Thanks David!

Let me challenge you: how would your solution translate to a wiki page
for a beginner with the sam eproblem to solve ... content but also the
'how to get there aspect'

And thanks David for this explanation of the situation.
There are a couple of things that you need to keep in mind when you
start with something like context:

- you often bring with your experience (and exposure) to different
systems and these don't translate; recently i was playing with some css
setup for a rather complex xml -> html mapping and things that would
have taken me 5 minutes in tex costs me plenty of time in css due to all
kind of interactions; just as with tex, one can end up with hacks found
on the web (it was hobyism of course)

- often one starts using something like tex in order to do something
that is not really 'beginners' stuff (cue: always test something new or
explore a command in a one page small test file!) .. the extremes are: i
do this complex book layout in 'indesign' (manual work) but how can i do
it (fully automatic) in tex (and i have to have it running next week)
and btw, i have xml inout that has flaws

- in typesetting all kind of mechanisms are involved, it's an ecosystem
and all can work with all and interfere with all ... comparing with
word/css is a bit tricky as tex systems are meant for automatic flows
(with of course local tuning but then we enter
what-you-program-is-what-you-get) and dtp is klick and point and choices
on the spot .. i think one can safely say that tex has a longer learning
curve but that gets compensated in the end (it compares to typing: who
takes a few week typing course in order to benefit later ... most start
with two fingers and do that their whole live) .. tex has been qualified
as a live-long toolkit: it takes a while but after that you use if your
whole live (which is posisble because it stays around)

- if one is happy with word and it does what it does better and faster
.. don't use tex; i admit that i never used word but then, i never had
to make documents of that kind (just like i alway suse metapost and
never used a drawing program as i never needed that kind of graphics)

- in context you need to think rather minimalistic: most styles can
actually be rather small once you realize that a lot of configuration
keys are similar (there is no need to document 'before' or 'style' with
each comand ... most beginners styles have too much code

- in addition to manuals (the ones

Your "answer" is pretty much coded code to me. I don't understand it and don't have the
first notion of how to implement it in my file. For one thing, I have no clue what
"ttbf" means. Can't find it on the wiki or in the manuals. Google says it's the Texas
Teen Book Festival but I'm guessing that ain't it. ???

My example shows which key is used for which space around each item.

To insert vertical space you have to use the \blank command and set a
value in the optional argument, e.g. \blank[1cm].

To insert now a space of 1cm before the first item you need the "before"
key with \blank as argument:

  \setupitemgroup[mdshw][1][before={\blank[1cm]}]

OK. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to guess that. I am a rank beginner and
while there are breakthroughs now and then, frustration is still the main thing
I experience trying to learn/use ConTeXt...

In any case, my original question is still not solved. The before/inbetween
keys add space everywhere. I only want space between top-level items.

Here is something like what I need, with the spacing exaggerated:

1. Multi-line, involved question… Multi-line, involved question… Multi-line,

question… Multi-line, involved question… Multi-line, involved question…
What’s the answer?

a. An answer that may well wrap onto a second or even third line but is usually
half a line or less.
b. By the time the data has been accurately analyzed, critical failure has
already occurred.
c. Seven bands must be hired to adequately bring the funk.

Re: [NTG-context] spacing before items

2020-06-17 Thread Mike Cooper
Yes, I did try it. It put "[before]" (in ttbf (thanks for the hint!)) on the
previously blank line before the first top-level item. And it put
"[inbetween]" in the other previously blank lines between both level of items,
and "[after]" into the previously blank line after the last item.

Spacing was not affected at all, only mysterious words in square brackets
showed up in the output.

Is something like this what you want? (Play with the values [2cm])

\defineitemgroup[mdshw][levels=2]

\setupitemgroup[mdshw][1][n][before={\blank[2cm]},after={\blank[2cm]},inbetween={\blank[2cm]}]
\setupitemgroup[mdshw][2][a, packed, 1*broad][left=(, right=), stopper=]

Thanks Wolfgang. Sometimes what we think is intuitive (I had just
assumed that some sort of para indentation might do it) is not so! And
yes, I had already worked out the before and after keys.

Many thanks,

I presumed I would need to do something with \setuplist[section]. I

\setuplist[section][indenting=yes] and even indentation=yes in the

To change the vertical space between entries you use the before and
after keys (this does *not* change the interline space), e.g.

    \setuplist[...][before=\blank, after={\blank[2*line]}]

and to indent entries you use the margin key, e.g.

    \setuplist[...][margin=2em]

but this is unrelated to paragraph indentation.

Btw: The default setup seems to be two lines distance, is that a

It’s only a single line but the rule itself adds additional vertical

Hi Huseyin,

it isn’t clear (at least, to me) what you mean with the footnote line
(there is a rule for all footnotes).

I think that the "before" key from \setupnote does exactly what you say
you want: specify the distance between the rule and the main text.

You might use the "before" key in \setupnotation, but that will alter
the space before in all footnotes.

Maybe you might check the i-context.pdf document (on pages 233 and 234)
to check the options for both the \setupnotation (the individual note)
and \setupnote (the notes group). (It comes with the ConTeXt Suite
distribution, tex/texmf-context/tex/context/interface/mkiv/i-context.pdf)

Just in case it might help,

A big difference between the old columns environment and the new mixed
columns code is that the new environment uses grid snapping by default
which can result in blank lines in the output.

Below is a simplified version of Henning problems which produces an
blank line when you use bold text.

\showboxes

\starttext

\startcolumns[balance=no]

\snaptogrid[]\hbox{\setstrut\begstrut Ward\endstrut}

\samplefile{ward}

\snaptogrid[]\hbox{\bf\setstrut\begstrut Ward\endstrut}

\samplefile{ward}

\stopcolumns

\stoptext

Two simple ways to get rid of the blank line are

1. to disable the strut for the section or

2. to disable the grid snapping for the section.

\showboxes

\setuphead[section][before=,after=]
\setuphead[section][style=bold]

\define[1]\Sample
  {\begingroup
 \setuphead[section][#1]
 \section{Ward \doifsomething{#1}{\tttf [#1]}}
 \samplefile{ward}\par
   \endgroup}

\starttext

\startcolumns[balance=no]

\Sample{}

\Sample{style=}

\Sample{strut=no}

\Sample{grid=no}

\stopcolumns

\stoptext

It seems to me that the replacement of the column layout code was premature,
when it breaks heading setup, frame handling and can’t handle columns that

- the new mixed column code has been around for even longer (and always

both old mechanism were only partially adapted to mkiv and i bet that
there were side effects

- the new page columns mode is the way to go for columns with floats etc

so we have three mkiv column models and two old ones available as

If it may be useful: I keep a very short-term backup so that when
things "break" or change, I can easily backtrack to a working copy.
I update using the following shell script:

#!/bin/sh
CONTEXTHOME=${HOME}/context
if [ ! -d ${CONTEXTHOME}/beta ] ; then
mkdir -p ${CONTEXTHOME}/beta
fi
if [ ! -d ${CONTEXTHOME}/previous ] ; then
mkdir -p ${CONTEXTHOME}/previous

cd ${CONTEXTHOME}/beta
echo "*** move current to previous ***"
rsync -av --delete --progress . ../previous
echo "*** update beta ***"
rsync -ptv --progress rsync://contextgarden.net/minimals/setup/first-setup.sh .
2>&1 | tee first-setup.log

./first-setup.sh --modules=all --fonts=all --engine=luatex 2>&1 | tee -a
first-setup.log

This will not help against any undetected changes that may go unnoticed
for a while between different projects, but does protect me against
immediate "bugs".

Hans has suggested keeping a ConTeXt standalone copy in each separate
project file, as it is small enough that such duplication does not take
up too much space. (As we strip-down the distribution and as storage

Re: [NTG-context] spacing

2018-11-09 Thread Tomas Hala
Hi,

I solve the same problem for ages... I decided for fixed time points related
with new edition of TeXlive.

Advantages:

TeXlive versions (from my point of view) are most stable.
You really can compile your files repeatedly getting the same result.

Disadvantages:

You have to store all TeXlive editions.
All TeXlive editions are space demanding.
You have make notes on your files/projects which version was used.
You cannot use new features if you are going to refresh the project.

This is my way but maybe there is something better.
[I work ConTeXt since 2010 and only with MkIV.]

Best wishes,

Tomas

It’s really annoying if ConTeXt proves unreliable time and again.
I’m trying to replace InDesign in my workflows as often as possible, but if I

The columns environment uses now the newer mixedcolumns mechanism which
is the reason for the differences in your document.

To use the older columns mechanism add \usemodule[old-multicolumns] to
your document.

In the last days I recognized that some of my ConTeXt projects behave
differently WRT spacing, not only with \framed, but also with heads -
everywhere there’s more space induced than before.
The attached screenshot shows an example of before and after.

The headings are set up like

\setuphead[section,subject][page=no,
before={\testpage[7]\blank},after=,
previousnumber=no, sectionsegments=section]
\setuphead[subsection,subsubject][style={\bf},
before={\testpage[7]\blank[small]},after=,
sectionsegments=section:subsection]

"1 Aufnahme" is a section, "1.1" is a subsection; I always use the start/stop
version.

To get back to the old behaviour, I need to replace the \blank commands with a
negative vskip of font size!
And then there’s still space inserted if the heading starts at the top of a
column.

I tried to come up with a MWE – headingspacetest.tex shows at least that
there’s always space inserted before section headers.

It might be related to some font handling, since the spacing changes affect different
"things" in different projects – frames with my label stickers and on my
magazine covers, headings like here. Or maybe the changes are unrelated.

This change happened between ConTeXt versions 2018.07.27 and 2018.09.01. I
didn’t change my code.

Unfortunately there are no older versions of ConTeXt to go back to any more.

Dear list,

I have this sample:

\showframe
\setuppapersize[A7]
\setupnotation[footnote][width=broad]
\starttext
\footnote{\input zapf}
\stoptext

I need better spacing in footnotes (to avoid horizontal overflows).

I thought "width=broad" would improve the situation, but it didn’t
change anything.

What am I doing wrong here?
You have to change the alignment values. Instead of "stretch" which
allows ConTeXt

to put larger spaces between word you can use font expansion.

\setupnotation[footnote][align={verytolerant,stretch}]

The in-between key controls the vertical space between the enumeration title
and text when the title appears on top (alternative=top) of the enumeration
content.

Hi Thangalin!

thank you for your reply. It does what I was looking for. I had already
inbetween= in my definition, which I thought would be to adjust the spacing
inside a row of enumeration-items… But the before and after commands do the
trick. Even the width is great, I adjusted the value a little bit and now the
enumerations look precisely as I had it in mind.

Thank you very much.

Is there going to be a solution considering the spacing problems with the use
of units (native mkiv command) in near future (within 2-3 weeks)? If there is
none and I am not doing something wrong, I'll add a local work around every
time I use units. As this is much work, I'd appreciate if someone told me if
this is something that might be fixed soon. If not I'm good - I just need to
know.

Explanation of my problem: Maybe I am doing something wrong, but in the
resulting document the spacing is bigger in math mode then in the text mode in
case I use \units{...}. In particular, the distance for the decimal separator
is as if I would type $1,2$ instead of $1{,}2$ (example: $\units{1,2}$)..

can you try

\appendtoks
\disablemathpunctuation
\to \everyunits

Thanks.

Cheers,
Andreas

Hi,

I still do have problems with a wrong spacing between number and unit in math

$\alpha = $ \unit{1,2 meter}

but I think this is likely to result in problems with the look of the result in
case this is close to a line break.

\starttext

Re: [NTG-context] Spacing and font problem with \chemical inside display math

2012-12-13 Thread Alan BRASLAU
We are currently in the process of a complete re-write of the chemical macros.
In fact, we are almost finished and Hans is including the new macros in the
beta (as fast as he can keep up with my changes...).

In your example, I see the spacing problem in display math but do not see the
font problem. Maybe Hans can fix this extra spacing problem.

Rather than display math (as was suggested with ppchTeX), we have now introduced
\startchemicalformula
\stopchemicalformula
in order to "display" a chemical formula.

Also, I'm not sure why you might want to put \chemical{} within a \text
command; may I suggest either \type{\chemical{CO_2}} or {\tt typewriter
\chemical{CO_2}}, depending upon what you want to achieve.

Re: [NTG-context] Spacing around integrals

2012-11-07 Thread Hans Hagen

On 11/6/2012 5:22 PM, Otared Kavian wrote:

Dear Dalyoung,

I can confirm that there is still a serious issue with the way mkiv handles the
bounds of integral signs, and this has been reported several times by Aditya,
myself and others.
In particular the latest beta (version 2012.11.06 09:56) handles the bounds
somwhat inconsistently, depending on the fonts used:
• with the default LM fonts, the bounds of the integral sign are
correct in displayed maths, but are too close whith inline maths;
• with the default xits fonts, the bounds of the integral sign are too
far away in displayed maths, but are a little bit far whith inline maths.

Here are the source file for my testing and the resulting PDF file. PLease
typeset the file both with mkii and mkiv to see the differences.
Hans did some changes recently, which resulted in a better behaviour of the
bug, but still the problem is not completely solved.

The problem with integrals is that we need to support new fonts as well
as old ones. One issue is that the width of an integral sign is not the
real with but has some interference with italic corrections. Also, older
versions of luatex has issues with this and for that context has some
mechanisms that could deal with it. The current version of luatex has
improved math so those hacks can go away. Also, math fonts have been
adapted to the latest interpretations of the open type math
specification (and those that don't ... well, lets forget about using
them). In due time all math fonts will be real otf fonts, but I like to
keep the virtual variant(s) around (as I've too much time invested in
it, they server as example of defining virtual fonts, and as benchmark
for traditional fonts).

At the same time we need to deal with italic corrections, in text, where
open type does not have such a property, as well as in math, where fonts
can have italic corrections but (as with more cases) the implementation
of them can be limited.

Anyhow, I now trust luatex do some of that better than before (let's
assume recent engines and fonts). However, some automagic italic
correction between italic shapes and non italic shapes as well as math /
text boundaries are still dealt with.

Yet another issue is that we have double and triple integrals so from
now on that's also done differently for the virtual fonts (read: more
mkiv like) as we had already the mechanisms for that in place.

So ... another attempt.

Hans

It was a bit buzzling, but I think I found it, it seems the lines:

italics = {
["xits-math"] = italics,
},

in xits-math.lfg (`mtxrun --find-file` to locate it), prevents the
application of italic correction for some reason, removing it resolves
the issue. I didn't experience it because I had a different
xits-math.lfg in my ~/texmf tree.

Hans, what those lines are supposed to do?

 Khaled

Re: [NTG-context] Spacing for {\cal P} in XITS

2012-05-29 Thread Andy Thomas
Hello,

it looks off on my computer (Mac 10.6 with preview and acrobat) and with the
context-standalone (from 1 hour ago). However, it does work with TL2011 (not
12).

Then, I copied (overwrote) the fonts from TL into the standalone (from
/Library/TeX/Root/texmf-dist/fonts/opentype/public/xits/ to
~/context/tex/texmf/fonts/opentype/public/xits/) and deleted the cache. But
that did not help, the context standalone still produces the 'too-close P'. I
also tried the newest font files from yesterday, but still no luck. Hope that
help finding the bug.

Andy

P.S. Is there more to be considered than only the font files (the .otf s)?

Looks fine here (in my eyes at least), can you attach the resulting PDF?

Re: [NTG-context] spacing between floating figure caption and surrounding text

2009-11-17 Thread Vyatcheslav Yatskovsky

Hello Hans,

sidespacebefore
sidespaceafter

Yes, I played with them, but did not understand their logic.
Is 'high' equals to sidespacebefore=0
'low' -- to sidespaceafter=0?

In other words, how to duplicate the effect of 'low' using sidespace
options?

Hello,

Another question about figures. How to get rid of big spacing between
floating figure caption and surrounding text?

In the following example, I want the spacing between "Figure 1" and the
text below to be twice less.

Normally, you would do \setupfloat[figure][after=] but that does not
seem to work very well for side floats, sorry.

sidespacebefore
sidespaceafter

Hello Taco

Normally, you would do \setupfloat[figure][after=] but that does not
seem to work very well for side floats, sorry.

Thanks for trying to help! :)

Actually, I discovered from "It's in details" that

\placefigure[inner, low]{ }

is ok for my situation.

Another questions is: how to setup "low" parameter for all figures globally?

Well, the problem seems to have gone away (after updating my local
minimals). Thanks for the help!
