Hi that's interesting I'm running mint 13 Maya currently and I can confirm that
nuke runs on it perfectly - the latest updates give you 4 usable nvidia
drivers
I tried fedora and got nowhere _ as a Linux beginner like I am - I would highly
recommend mint or ubuntuu

Unfortunately because of linux politics, many distributions like fedora
don't make it easy to install the hardware opengl drivers because they are
in binary form(ubuntu/linux mint have made this extremely simple).
here is a tutorial on installing them:
Oh, I forgot to mention that tutorial is for nvidia only. It will be a
different process with a different video card.

I have they ever which way to get these install, so many option as to how to
achieve this, all seem to break the install.
I think its time to try a different disto.
I have to install the driver with x11 not running I do this with reinit 3 then
it asks me to turn off the default drivers I do
I should say telinit 3
