A second round on the east pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, timed with the
rising tide did not produce yesterday's 2 Hudsonian Godwits.
However, there were some new birds indicating a turnover, albeit a small one
based on numbers. A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER topped the newbies, in addition
Today I had the pleasure of taking my 17 year old nephew Neal Vita birding -
this being only his 2nd time in the field, and 1st time looking for shorebirds.
We saw a total of 39 species, with 30 of them being new to Neal. He was
thrilled...as was I !

This evening, while biking around Meadow Lake in Flushing Meadow - Corona Park
in Queens County, I went to a large, shallow wet area which had held a high
number of shorebirds last Friday evening. ("Large" number meaning 30-40, which
is the highest count I have seen in this park in over 15
Tonight at about 8:30 there were two, possibly three common nighthawks
flying over and back at the soccer field through the mist and clouds. Each
year for the past several, I have seen nighthawks at this location between

Made a quick stop at Forest Lawn before work. Not a lot of activity,
but I am pretty sure there were at least 2 additional warblers that I
could not view well enough to ID. I also may have seen a Common
Nighthawk - but I only saw it for a second and at a great distance.

bellied Plovers. It's possible they could return later today.

Previously reported Buff-breasted Sandpiper is currently being seen in the
north west quadrant of the field north of Head of the Neck Rd.and west of
Eastport Manor Rd. Actively feeding, flushed a couple of times, but has stayed
in the general area. Best viewing spot is Eastport Manor Rd, by
Both the AMERICAN AVOCET and the AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN continue on the East
Pond. The AWPE is sleeping on the spit immediately after Dead Man's Cove and
the American Avocet is near the north eastern most corner of the East Pond. No
sign of the HUGOs.
