Spent weekend in Fire Island birding from The Pines to Watch Hill. Counted
over 40 species. 9 Warbler species, the Black-throated Blue being the most
abundant. Large flocks of Red-breasted Nuthatches and Yellow-shafted Flickers.
No unusual gulls but lots of Royal Terns. Because of the
Since we didn't have a Hummingbird today, I suspect our last yard date for this
year was yesterday September 29, 2012. It was nectaring on Zinnias and
appeared to be a female, but the angle of observation could not confirm that.

Had my first gannet of the season today about 15 miles east of Fire Island
Inlet, perhaps 4 1/2 miles offshore. Really nice adult bird with bright white
plumage and contrasting black wing tips, that was a marked contrast to the

A young Connecticut warbler was seen briefly but well at the Floyd Bennett
Field community garden at about 11:30 this morning. Also there were two
Tennessee Warblers and a Northern Waterthrush. The bit was about 2/3 if the way
down towards the cricket field.

Currently looking at a White-faced Ibis on the South End of the East Pond at
Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.
Preening in an area where the Greater Yellowlegs tend to gather in the south
west corner. This would be looking north and in the corner as you enter the
east pond from the south end.

but regular waves of migrants passing overhead (through the audio feed coming
in through my Bill Evans-style rooftop-mounted microphone) I bolted alert after
hearing this much higher frequency and longer in duration
