Myself and Anthony Graves observed a female wood duck and I believe 5 newly
hatched chicks swimming in the east pond of Wading River Ponds (located on
the border of Brookhaven Town and Riverhead Town (north country road - near
the former Nuclear Power Plant). There is a wood duck box in the nearby

show mottled/streaked underwing coverts and barred tail feathers, making it a
subadult. A full adult would have unmarked gray coverts and solid black tail
feathers.

The highlights of a quick birding trip this morning before the rain were a
single BLACK TERN still hanging around Oneida Lake near the Common Tern colony
on the islands visible from Mill St in Constantia, and a singing PRAIRIE
WARBLER at the power line cut on Churchill Rd in Happy Valley WMA in
The previously reported MISSISSIPPI KITE continues as of 8:20AM at the Cemetery
of the Resurrection near the town of Pleasant Plains on the south shore or
Staten Island (Richmond Co.).
If you are coming via Brooklyn, take the S.I. Expressway to the West Shore
Expressway South (440) and get off
For those who don't know, this cemetery is on Staten Island. It is the place
that had all the cave swallows last fall.
