Excellent question I've noticed a decline as well. I am no expert but have
tagged monarchs as a citizen scientist for the past 3 years on the south shore
of Long Island as part of the U of Kansas monarch watch project. Two years ago
there were enough monarchs flying east to west along the dunes
Finally got out to do a bit of birding, thinking today might be a fine day
for raptors along the barrier beach. As always, the company was delightful,
but the birds were few, at least during the time I spent there ( ~ 0915 to
~ 1415). I did, however, see FOS Peregrine Falcon ( 2 adults on the F.I.

Dear NY'ers,
With permission from the listowner I am cross posting this message from the
NJ list. The Raptor Trust is located in the Great Swamp in NJ. Many of us
have been there. They run educational exhibits and most importantly, a
field hospital for injured raptors. The photos on there

I should have checked all of the emails before posting my last message (see
below)! Since the bird was seen flying upriver, it may have gone to rest on
one of the piers of the international railroad bridge.
Good luck!

At Steve Taylor's prompting I will try to clarify what some of the landmarks
are that have been mentioned in the various posts and text messages that
have been sent about the Brown Booby.
The tower - this is the tower at Erie Basin Marina where birders have seen
the booby from most frequently.
Hi, does anyone know if there are still skimmers hanging around Nickerson or
Lido? Volunteers for Wildlife has a juvenile that was rescued and is now ready
for release. They would prefer to release him in the area where he was found.
Please email me off-list.
Thanks,
Stella Miller
Although the Park has apparently been sold today by Bloomberg for a private

Hi All,
Today in the Turtle Cove section of Pelham Bay Park, Jack Rothman and I had 2
RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS; a juvenile was in the area between the driving range
and the Cove, while an adult was seen northwest of the range near the end of
the wood chip path. Other highlights from the area
