The drake Barrows Goldeneye was present in waters a half mile or so west of Sands Point Preserve on the north shore of LI. I walked the beach around low tide at noon and found the bird among t he numerous Common Goldeneye. Easy to pick out with the scope. Jeff Ritter Sent from my Verizon

I led a winter bird walk for NYC Audubon in Central Park today. It was chilly and damp but we saw some nice stuff. Highlights included a stunning male Common Merganser in the reservoir (open water near the fountain at south end), along with 3 female Hooded Merganser, 2 Am. Coot, and numerous

Aidan and I were walking in Avalon Preserve today in Stony Brook, NY and came across two fresh holes in a dead tree. It really looks like something a Pileated Woodpecker would make. Does anyone have any thoughts on what this hole could be if not a Pileated? Below is a link to the picture on

Carrie Laben and I spent from early AM through 10:30 AM trying to find the Gyrfalcon with no luck. It apparently is most reliable in the afternoon. Only birds of note during our visit were two Rough-legged Hawks (one at Shawangunk, one along Hoagerburgh), 2 Bald Eagles at the spillway on the
