The Captree CBC (southwestern Suffolk County, LI) was conducted today under
conditions considerably more benign than those experienced on yesterday’s Long
Island counts. Even so, many species seemed very sparse (Bonaparte’s Gull was
missed!). The preliminary species tally was 122 (this includes
The Queens County Christmas Bird Count was held today and our 48 observers
totaled 119 species on count day (assuming that nothing new comes in on a
couple of outstanding checklists).
Highlights included:

The Northern Nassau Christmas Count was held yesterday, Saturday, December 19th.
The preliminary results are 104 species and about 19,000 individuals. The
number of species is really just about average but the total individuals is
far, far below all the averages (5/10/20 year).

A thorough hike through black rock forest yielded a great 3 saw whet owls all
showing evidence of having been present for well over a week. I make this
judgement based on the amount of pellets and wash under the birds. Also present
was a high flying golden eagle, barred owl and red tailed hawk.
Bird is currently being seen at Fort pond cemetery, northwest area, in
sunny area at edge of thicket.
