The pond on Cold Spring Road between Middle and Quarry Rds in the Town of Caledonia is roosting hundreds of ducks and geese, mostly mallards and Canadas, but also included at least 3 Greater White-fronted Geese and a few black ducks and my first Gadwall of the season. The geese were flying out

Is it any better when a birder flushes a bird for something even more ephemeral as a slightly better look. Lets all be thankful that birding has evolved from the days of Audubon, when it was done through the barrel of a shotgun rather than the lenses of cameras or binos. Michael R. Wasilco

If there were strong storms in the area it is more likely that the birds were caught in a strong downdraft (microburst?) and knocked out of the air and killed by impact with the ground. This has been recorded to have wiped out flocks of ducks in the past. Michael R. Wasilco Regional
