The pond on Cold Spring Road between Middle and Quarry Rds in the Town of

Is it any better when a birder flushes a bird for something even more
ephemeral as a slightly better look.
Lets all be thankful that birding has evolved from the days of Audubon,
when it was done through the barrel of a shotgun rather than the lenses
of cameras or binos.

With the cluster of rare waterfowl being seen in this location, and the
indication that at least the Pochard is an escapee it would be good to know
what other birds, if any, the owner of the Pochard might have lost. In my
mind, the cluster of rare and attractive waterfowl with a known escapee

He was probably trying to fill his tags since yesterday was opening day of
moron season and he heard that was a good spot to go after photographers
harrassing birds.
Seriously though, you really should not be insulting the very group of people
who have historically provided the vast majority

If there were strong storms in the area it is more likely that the birds were
caught in a strong downdraft (microburst?) and knocked out of the air and
killed by impact with the ground. This has been recorded to have wiped out
flocks of ducks in the past.

Just keep in mind that if you are stopped by a NYS Environmental Conservation
Officer or USFWS agent while in possession of a protected bird, bird carcass or
parts of a carcass, you will be in violation of the laws and could be arrested
no matter how good your intent. That is the message that
There is no open season on idiots, so he must have been poaching idiots.
Seriously though, he was most assuredly a bow hunter and will have as little or
less disturbance to the birds than the birders do, and his license fees help
pay for the management site that is available for all the public
