There has been an Empidonax Flycatcher in Central Park since at least Wednesday. I had good looks at the bird this evening, thanks to Fritz Muller, although it was late and in poor light. The eye-ring is large, white and with the characteristic teardrop shape of a Western- type Empidonax; unlike that of any eastern Empid I've ever seen. It is constantly flicking it wings and long tail. I couldn't see the yellowish wash that others have reported due to the poor light. But the wings appear to be very gray with prominent white wing-bars. The lower mandible is pale. The bird has a tuft on it's head that apparently is due to some missing feathers.
Sharron Crocker got some photos which, hopefully, she will post on her website. It's an interesting bird that others may want to look for. It was hanging around near the Oven in the same area as the Red-headed Woodpecker. For those not familiar with the area, follow the path north of the Boathouse around The Lake to the area just west of The Point..
