Subject: [Mearnsbirdclub] Orange County Shorebirds!

In response to Ken McDermott's post from last night, I headed to the Black Dirt
Region of Orange County this morning. I found an abundance of shorebirds on
Missionland Road in Pine Island. Keeping track of numbers for my ebird report,
I found the following numbers of birds which Ken had reported yesterday:

American Golden Plover - 1
Semipalmated Plover - 4
Killdeer - approx. 200
Spotted Sandpiper - 3
Lesser Yellowlegs - 25
Stilt Sandpiper - 2
Semipalmated Sandpiper - 25
Least Sandpiper - 35
White-rumped Sandpiper - 2 (one each in two fields)
Baird's Sandpiper - 1
Pectoral Sandpiper - 15

Then as I scanned a flock, I found 3 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS! I was able to
reach Rob Stone, and he came over and got to see the birds, including the
buffies.

Later, after I had returned to Sullivan County, I received another call from
Ken who informed me he had found seven SANDERLING on Turtle Bay Road. I was
able to zoom down and find them still there. Other shorebirds at this spot
were:

Killdeer - 9
Semipalmated Plover - 4
Lesser Yellowlegs - 6
Stilt Sandpiper - 1
Least Sandpiper - 3

I posted a somewhat distant shot on my blog at

Great birding! Thanks Ken! John Haas
