Does anyone have an idea as to the cause for the different coloration in the
legs. Could it be diet related?

show an even darker mantled individual.

Both of our common large gull species, Herring and Great Black-backed,
occasionally deviate from their usual dull pink legs to more or less yellow
legs. Some examples of this phenomenon can be seen starting here:
Thanks for sharing. We haven't had any gull ID discussions on this list in
quite a while. I think it's worth pointing out that herring gull-like birds
showing yellow or yellowish legs are reported from our area from time to
time and recall one that was discussed on this list from the Howard Beach
FYI... The back on this gull looks too pale for Yellow Legged Gull but I
thought I would share.
