*** THE LINNAEAN SOCIETY OF NEW YORK - MEETING PROGRAM - AMERICAN MUSEUM OF
NATURAL HISTORY, NEW YORK CITY ***

This coming Tuesday (13 Jan 2015) our evening double-header will begin with
several short multimedia presentations from LSNY members covering a number
of topics and be followed by a full talk on winter pelagic birding. Please
join us.

*6:00 pm – The Linnaean Society of New York: Who We Are and What We Do*

The early program will focus on the rich history of the Linnaean Society of
New York. Andrew Rubenfeld will talk about the conservation crisis of 1955,
Patrick Baglee will share his research into a very interesting past
president, and Jill Hamilton will give us a look at some of the earliest
documents in the Society’s archives. We will also show a collection of
Patrick Baglee's videos featuring some of the top birds in the NYC area
from 2014.

*7:30 pm – Winter Pelagics in the Mid-Atlantic: Putting the “Birrr” in
Birding, Paul Guris *

The idea of venturing out on the ocean in winter is a daunting prospect for
many birders, Paul Guris notes, but this can be one of the most rewarding
times to look for seabirds and other marine life. Dovekies, puffins,
murres, razorbills, gannets, kittiwakes, loons, cormorants, ducks, and
gulls can all be found quite regularly. Some of these species are much more
common in our area than people realize — and new ways are being discovered
to help find these birds more reliably. He offers an introduction to what
one could expect on such a mid-Atlantic winter trip: what birds are
searched for and what is interesting about them. Guris, who operates See
Life Paulagics, has been birding in the Delaware Valley for over 40 years,
and has been involved with both the New Jersey and Pennsylvania state
records committees. Those participating in Freeport pelagic tomorrow will
enjoy this as a recap and as another opportunity to learn from Paul’s
considerable experience in local waters. [Thick mitts and down coats not
needed]

*WHERE & WHEN*

Both programs are open to the public FREE OF CHARGE and will be held in the
Linder Theater of the AMNH. Enter the museum from the 77th Street entrance,
where the route to the auditorium will be sign posted. The first program
will last approximately one hour with time before the second program to
talk to the speakers, and mingle with LSNY officers and council members,
who can provide information on becoming a part of this thriving and
historic natural history society.
