I birded a few spots in western Suffolk and eastern Nassau from late this
morning through mid afternoon, starting at Capri Lake in West Islip. There
the highlights were 48 REDHEAD and 2 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS. Then it was
on to Massapequa Preserve where I spent 2.5 hours covering from the first
pond north of Pittsburgh Ave. up to N. Linden Blvd. Standout birds included
the continuing male EURASIAN WIGEON and male AMERICAN X EURASIAN WIGEON,
both found feeding on the creek just upstream of the second pond north of
Pittsburgh Ave.; and 2 WILSON'S SNIPE, one on the east side of the marsh
north of the ballfields accessed via Walker Street, and the second just
upstream of the marsh. Lastly, at St. Charles Cemetery, around 3:00 I found
the BARNACLE GOOSE and a SNOW GOOSE among ~280 Canada Geese. The flock was
feeding just west of the northernmost compost piles.
