Around 8:00 this morning Betsy and I were separated in the yard but both of us identified the call of a PINE GROSBEAK - "peew peew peew", or something like that. We came together in the area the call was coming from and I finally spotted the bird but, of course, it chose that moment to fly before I could get my bins on it. Fortunately, it only went two neighbor yards away and we got a decent look at it. It appeared to be a female rather than a young male.
While watching the lake this morning, I had a female RED CROSSBILL land in a bare tree right in front of me while I heard another. I ran and got Betsy, we came back, and were treated to extended views of 22 individuals, feeding mainly on Norway spruce, occasionally on Red Pine. They were here off and on all morning. We both managed to get some decent audio. Good birding!
