Our Speaker will be Nancy Clum Ph.D,
Curator of Ornithology for the Wildlife Conservation Society at the Bronx Zoo.

PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION:

New York City Parks represent the major green spaces available for bird life in the greater metropolitan area. The Ornithology Department of the Wildlife Conservation Society, based at the Bronx Zoo, has been conducting work on migratory birds in the park since 2004 and has documented the value of the park for migrating birds, both in terms of use as a stopover sight and the ability of birds to refuel while in residence. Beginning in 2010, work was begun on a survey to document use of the park by breeding birds. Comparison with historical records shows that while the number of species supported is similar, species composition has changed significantly. The nature of the changes and the reasons behind them will be discussed.

BIOGRAPHY

Nancy Clum is involved in the management and propagation of captive populations of birds and also represents WCS on the boards of two Caribbean non-profits, the Bahamas National Trust and the Asa Wright Nature Center in Trinidad. She is involved with research on habitat use and long term patterns of reproductive success in Caribbean flamingos and coordinates the Grupo para la Conservación de Flamencos Caribeño, which sets regional research priorities for the species, and is leading a new WCS global initiative on flamingos. She also studies ospreys as part of the Glover’s Reef Living Landscape Program in Belize, coordinates WCS's contributions to Asian vulture conservation, and collaborates with Global Conservation on projects in Cuba, Guatemala, Cambodia, and Sulawesi. Research on captive populations includes fecal hormone analysis and reproductive behavior of lesser birds of paradise and Andean condors, gender-sorting of eggs, and use of playbacks to stimulate breeding behavior in colonial waterbirds. Local research examines use of the park by migratory and breeding birds. She received both her M.S. and Ph.D. from Cornell University.
