Update: the Slaty-back is currently preening on the ice sheet at the north end
of the Reservoir. Well visible from the northeast shoreline. An Iceland Gull is
presently right next to it, and there have been three individual Lesser
Black-backs around the area today as well.
Cheers!

After nearly 17 hours of search time over the course of my 7 attempts,
including 6 hours today, the Slaty-backed Gull is on the Reservoir now, bathing
near the western shore. We are watching it in nice light at a distance from the
northeast shoreline.
Cheers!

Late this afternoon, Garth Riley refound the SLATY-BACKED GULL on the rocks
a little ways above the falls on the Niagara River. Several of us made it to
Garth's location opposite the barge on the Canadian side and looked
downriver at the bird. Eventually it woke up, stretched a wing, and then

We have a report to eBird of a SLATY-BACKED GULL with convincing
photographs from Wallkill, Ulster County, NY. The bird has been seen right
on state prison property so the ability to stop and get decent looks, or
especially photos, is limited.

Anya Auerbach, Billy Kaselow, my father and I made the drive up to Buffalo

After about two hours of scanning, we found the bird (my 600th!) on the spit

A group of nine birders from Ontario and NY found a SLATY-BACKED GULL just
before noon today. We had a lengthy study of it perched and doing short
flights, seeing all of the field marks. It was too distant for flight shots
but we got some digiscoped images of it while perched. It appears to be a
Just to add to Andrew's message. Spent a fair amount of time looking for
the gull today before calling at quits at 4pm. Searched extensively along
the Newburgh waterfront and checked the Beacon Gull flock several times
during the day (the flock ebbed and flowed several times during the day).

The previously reported Slaty-backed Gull in Beacon of course wasn't there
while I was there from 2:30 to 4:30pm, but did see a nice adult Lesser
Black-backed Gull and juvenile Iceland Gull. Also missed the three eagles that
were there before I got there.

Many birders held vigil for the Slaty-backed Gull this afternoon.
Unfortunately, the gull didn't show. I think it is a real possibility that
the gull will return. Previous SBGU's in the Hudson Valley have remained for
extended periods. If this is true and the gulls routine can be determi
Just to clarify my previous post, Curt positively identified the gull, I was

I have posted a few of Curt McDermott's photos of an adult Slaty-backed Gull at
the Beacon Train Station on the Hudson River. Upon reviewing the many photos
Curt took of the bird I have concluded it is none other than a Slaty-backed

I looked in the field that had the Slaty-backed Gull yesterday but there

only had one dark-mantled gull - an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED.

For the second straight day, I checked fields along Youngstown-Wilson Road
