NY-birders,
I walked around the protected flats of Moriches Inlet/ Cupsogue today (17
August 2009) at low tide looking at shorebirds and terns. A Western
Sandpiper (basic plumage, not aged) and 7+ Black Terns were the only
standouts, though many birds were around and close - noteworthy were the
nice comparisons of both Willet subspecies. Hope Batcheller was also
covering the area today and might have more to add. Many Seaside Sparrows
in heavy molt were present in the saltmarsh and were easily coaxed out with
a bit of pishing. I also saw a lone Northern Bobwhite along Dune Rd. on the
way out to Cupsogue.
Several photos of the adult Buff-breasted Sandpiper from East Hampton
(yesterday) are here: http://www.flickr.com/bonxie88/
Cheers,
Tom
