Encouraged by Derek Rodgers' report yesterday of sighting both Red-necked Grebe
and Glaucous Gull under/near the Jessup La. Bridge, Westhampton Beach (coupled
with my ongoing "Hunt for Red Crossbill") at ~ 2PM, I headed down to Dune Rd.
Neither of Derek's birds were still there, but my memory of 3/25/01 was. This
date, or on 3/24/01, was the day Andy Murphy found a Thick-billed Murre at that
very spot. I saw the bird on the 25th, along with 5 other MBAS (our club's
original name) members, including Andy, but not counting Steve Biasetti's young
son Thomas, who was asleep in the car. My notes indicate that Andy's original
sighting might have been on the day before, hence the question.
Heading west, in the hope that today would be RC (and I'm not talking "Cola"
here) Day, the only birds of note were the 4 N.Gannets found during a short
sea-watch at Cupsogue Co.Pk. I then took Dune Rd. east to Shinnicock Inlet,
without connecting with a RC, but I did find a mixed flock of (~25) A.Robins
and (9) Cedar Waxwings feeding, bathing and preening in glorious sunlight, as
well as an A.Bittern, motionless, on the bay side just past Docker's Res't.,
until I started to exit the car to get a better picture !
Cheers'Bob
