[nysbirds-l] Here today - gone tomorrow !
We spent all of Saturday, and most of Sunday up west. In the A.M. we watched our #3 grandson, Brendan, play for the Chaminade J.V. Football Team, which beat a good Cardinal Hayes squad, and qualified for the CHSAA championship against Iona Prep next Saturday...Go Flyers ! In the P.M., I went down to Jones Beach in search of the Gray Kingbird, without success. The west end was quiet, although I did have a total of 8 Lesser Black-backed Gulls in West End Field 2 (7 in the west parking lot, with an additional bird in the eastern p/lot. I then went as far east as the Gilgo Marina Community, which was equally as quiet - I did, however, see single Cooper's Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk and Merlin ! After sleeping over at our daughter's in Rockville Centre, on Sunday afternoon we routed ourselves through Jones Beach, which was even quieter than the day before. Nary a single Lesser Black-backed Gull was found at WEJB2, with a perched Merlin in the east lot the only bird of note. Another resting Merlin, was the only notable bird seen along the entire length of the Ocean Parkway ! [nysbirds-l] Rufous Hummingbird - Columbia County (in rehab)
An immature female RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD was picked up, on Friday, Nov.9th, in a torpid state in Columbia County. She was turned over to the care of a licensed rehabilitator. The bird was emaciated with zero fat reserves. The hummingbird has been resuscitated and now doing well and feeding actively. A NYSARC report with photos and measurements will be filed. [nysbirds-l] Long Island barrier beaches - Evening Grosbeak, Red Crossbill, goshawk, etc - 11/11
Hello, There were lots of birds moving on today's nice NW winds. This is a moderately quick synopsis: After a brief dawn check of Jones Beach for the Gray Kingbird, which was not reported today (nor the Point Lookout Scissor-tailed Flycatcher), I joined a visible migration vigil at Robert Moses. Thousands of finches were moving east. Most of them were goldfinches, but there were well over a thousand *Pine Siskins* over a few hours. There was a single, calling female *Evening Grosbeak, *one small group of *Red Crossbills, *some Rusty Blackbirds, pipits, and other expected species for this time of year flying by. There were also tons of gannets visible over the ocean. At Tobay Beach in Nassau, there weren't any interesting passerines, but while walking along the edge of the giant parking lot I looked up to see an accipiter passing right over me. Photos confirmed it as a *Northern Goshawk*. It continued east into Suffolk until I lost it in the heat shimmer. Jones Beach West End had nothing too unusual except one (1) of the continuing *Marbled Godwits*. *Lesser Black-backed Gulls* have been reliable in the West End 2 lot lately, through today. The Norman Levy Preserve had a nice number of gulls, the best being merely a Laughing Gull. Also fun was a group of 21 parakeets feeding on the nearby ballfield. Lastly there was nothing too notable at Cow Meadow except two Fox Sparrows, some late Great Egrets and a Yellow-crowned Night-Heron. Berries are abundant along the trail to the observation platform, and a variety of regular frugivorous species were present. It is probably worth checking for Evening Grosbeak and stuff. [nysbirds-l] Fort Tilden morning flight and Northern Shrike now
There is currently an excellent westbound morning flight underway at Fort Tilden in Queens including an Evening Grosbeak, and many Rusty Blackbirds and small finches.
