[nysbirds-l] Steve N.Howell's "What exactly is a field notebook"

2022-11-10 Thread Juan Salas
Hello, I hope this is an acceptable message for this forum.
I am trying to find Steve N.Howell's 5 part series "What exactly is a field
notebook", published in the ABA's Eyrie in 2015, starting on July 26. When
I try to open the links mentioned in the review here:
https://blog.aba.org/2015/08/howell-on-field-notebooks-at-the-eyrie.html

the pages can't be found. I have written to the ABA's webmaster without
any luck.
Would someone have a copy of the entries?

Thank you.

[nysbirds-l] N.Y. County, NYC - plus a note on the **N.J. Eurasian Marsh-Harrier** to 11/9

2022-11-10 Thread Tom Fiore
The ***Eurasian Marsh-Harrier*** that has been noted from Morris County, **NEW
JERSEY** has been observed and photo’d. by many, including numbers of NY
state-resident birders, esp. by Wednesday, Nov. 9th. It is believed this is
the bird which was seen and well-reported in mid-coast Maine (U.S.A.) earlier
*this year* (in late August) and then “disappeared” (to reporting), for some
months. (Might be worthwhile for anyone with photos from any place between
Maine and New Jersey, who suspects a raptor they got photos of to be - “odd” -
to triple-check those pictures…) So did this marsh-harrier fly through any
portion of N.Y. State? Who’s to say, but again, photographs?[!]

- - - -
New York County, N.Y. City - (including Manhattan, Randall’s Island, and
Governors Island and skies above, waters-adjacent;
on recent days to Wed., November 9th.

The documented icteridae ("new world blackbird" species) -that we know of- for
New York County on Tuesday, 11/8 included:

Yellow-headed Blackbird (male) - as noted to NYS Birds, a great pick-up by 3
keen watchers-seekers, plus their eBird / Macaulay Library archived reports.
Eastern Meadowlark (2 or more, including stop-overs at Inwood Hill Park’s
Dyckman [St.] ball fields)
Baltimore Oriole (one well seen by many at Central Park; a ‘few’ others also as
fly-thru on the day)
Red-winged Blackbird (approx. 5,500 to 6,000+++ fly-overs for the day)
Brown-headed Cowbird (many hundreds, poss. 1,000+++ for day)
Rusty Blackbird (multiple, including some lingering and at-least small no’s. as
fly-overs)
Common Grackle (approx. 7,500 to 8,000+++ fly-thrus for the day)

… That Yellow-headed Blackbird a long-expected additional, and almost ‘overdue’
modern-record for N.Y. County, as a county which had already recorded Brewer’s
Blackbird! Incidentally on the day (on 11/8), on some all-day watches of the
broader region, as many as 50,000 icterids, or more, were tallied - especially,
at some of those watch-sites, for vast nunbers of Common Grackles - not at all
unusual for the time of the year or certain flight-pathways.

A phenomenal for the county (and great for the region in such numbers, esp. on
the lower Hudson) - Bonaparte’s Gull (MANY, *up to* about 200 were noted by
some of the keen observers - on the Hudson River, north of the G.W. Bridge) on
Monday, 11/7 …. the number also posted in eBird from the other-side - Bergen
County, New Jersey - of the Hudson, was 155 birds at one time… also, as noted
as well by other observers, the Bonaparte’s were in varying stages of
“age”-plumages. Thanks got to really all who participated in the sightings of
these, and *some* of them include D. Karlson, D. Hannay, and J. Suzuki all of
Manhattan, as well as C. Takacs of New Jersey - & multiple others, also! These
gulls were seen ON the water as well as in-flight. There are various photos in
some eBird checklists and thus in the Macaulay Library archive of these gulls.

At least one Cattle Egret came thru N.Y. County air-space for a bit, on Wed.
11/9, as noted from Governors Island (D. Gochfeld), on a day when others of
that species may have been moving in the region, some over prior recent days
also. Also moving for Governors Island (same day, and obs.) were no’s. of E.
Bluebirds and American Pipits, the former passerine sp. also found in a few
other locations on the day. Other species still showing in good to increasing
numbers in the county are the Tufted Titmice, with lately more Black-capped
Chickadees, and an up-tick of American Goldfinch, plus ongoing Purple Finch
movement, as well as a number of other various migrators or
potentially-irruptive species (in the region, as well).

12 Long-tailed Ducks, flyovers at and around the Dyckman Street pier +
ballfield area (to n. side of Dyckman), along the Hudson River, the park-sector
a part of the western edge of Inwood Hill Park in northern Manhattan, on Tues.,
11/8; a bit after initial sightings, ten or eleven were variously seen of the
original dozen, were still seen by at least 4 more observers, but they
eventually seemed to clear out, possibly all to the north of Manhattan. A nice
photo of the dozen-ducks from one of the earlier-in-day obs. is here:
https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/501962491

A Hooded Merganser was reported for Inwood Hill Park on 11/8, as well. More
Monk Parakeets for Manhattan - latest report, of two, from the n. area of
Manhattan, where they’ve been seen over recent years, fairly often in some
neighborhoods. In addition to the 2 ‘regulars’ of Randall’s Island-Bronx Kill
area, 3 Mute Swans were noted from the Dyckman St. pier area on 11/7, a sector
of the county where that species seems to be occasional, as well.

A Nashville Warbler for Swindler Cove Park, in northern Manhattan, on 11/7;
other warblers also have again been seen, and some of those may be detailed in
a future report. Vesper Sparrow was seen
