[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End

2010-10-20 Thread Sy Schiff
Jones Beach West End 20 October

Land birding was slow except for the always present Yellow-rumped Warblers..
The interest, for me, was on the bar in front of the marina. Here there were
some hundreds of shorebirds to look through:--~125 Black-bellied Plover; 1
Golden Plover, several passes before I found it; ~20 American Oystercatchers;
~40 Red Knot; a dozen Sanderling; 150 Dunlin; a dozen Short-billed Dowitchers,
can't rule out a Long-billed as many had their heads tucked and offered
unfavorable views.

The eastern end of West End #2 lot had a small rain puddle which attracted
gulls including a full plumaged adult Lesser Black-backed Gull with bright
yellow legs.

At the turnaround, a short flurry of raptors included a Northern Harrier,
several Sharp-shinned Hawks including one that made a pass a larger Cooper's
Hawk. As my grandson used to say, "COOL". Close-up comparisons are always neat.

[nysbirds-l] West End/Jones Beach Birds (Nassau Co.)

2010-10-20 Thread Ken Feustel
At WE this morning there was an American Golden Plover on the sandbar in the
WE2 Marina along with three Western Willets and twenty-five Red Knots. On the
ocean south of the swale the calm winds resulted in excellent viewing
conditions. We observed a single Parasitic Jaeger harassing Laughing Gulls and
Forster's Terns. Two Royal Terns passed by the beach heading west. In the swale
itself we observed two flyby calling Lapland Longspurs, while two additional
Lapland Longspurs were feeding along the trail that borders the west side of
the swale. One bird was a particularly colorful male.

A flock of some 3,000 Tree Swallows were hawking insects and landing to rest on
the beach south of the swale. Flyby passerines observed and/or heard from the
median included two American Pipits, twelve Pine Siskins, and half a dozen
Purple Finch.

On Monday afternoon there was female Blue Grosbeak feeding along the north side
of Robert Moses State Park Field 2 west of the main entrance.
