A question; please pardon my ignorance, I do not have access to a printer, nor
do I have any printed material showing spring migration arrival dates to NJ or
NY. I am hoping a wise birder can tell me 'normal' spring arrival dates for
Snowy egrets and or a link I can visit to gain this
Because this field trip was posted in the January 2011 “New York Birder,” and
had to be cancelled on the original date of February 19th because of weather, I
am posting this notice about its re-scheduling by the field trip leader Carl
Starace.

Jamaica Bay Wildlife refuge 3 Mar
Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) started on the West Pond where we found all 3
species of Merganser in the pond (nice) in addition to a the usual puddle
ducks. On the far side the "Common" Teal was actively feeding with a group of
Green-winged Teal. No evidence
After a good 30-45 minutes of searching, I found the Central Park
RED-HEADED WOODPECKER in the first tree on the edge of the Sheep
Meadow where the walkway leading north from the carousel (that takes
one over the overpass) intersects with the east-west walkway leading
to 65th St. (specifically,
On a site visit to Four Sparrow Marsh in Brooklyn this morning I had my
first American Woodcock of the year.

Yesterday, after I left Rob Stone and Bob Cotter, Rob found EIGHT Greater
White-fronted Geese at the Camel Farm just off lower road near Pine Island. He
shortly found a ninth GWFG at the Turf Nursery. (a definate record!) I couldn't
go back, but went down first thing this morning. There were
1 Pileated woodpecker,(PIWP)male,flying over I-87N, flying east
to west. 11:40AM. 3/3/11. Near Tuxedo Park. I have seen 1 in that
locale for the past 6 months! 1
