Living less than a mile from the Cohalan Courthouse complex in Central
Islip, I had no excuse to not go see the nesting Peregrines covered in
the Newsday articles this past week. I did so this afternoon on my way home
from birding Cupsogue County Park, Pike's Beach, and the Gabreskie Airport
area.
Seeing Joe DiCostanzo's posting about a female Summer Tanager made me wonder
whether perhaps I'd lost my female, but I think both birds are still there.
I can certainly add some late June NYS records for the species.
Saw the male Summer Tanager in the front yard on Friday evening (24th) -
Unfortunately, the Hooded Crow did NOT appear for me from 1:30 PM thru 5:00
PM today. (However, I did add 21 species to my Richmond County list.) At
least 5 juvenile BONAPARTE'S GULLS were present on the beach and 4 ROYAL
TERNS flew by at one point. I found it interesting that a FIELD SPARROW
