[nysbirds-l] Westchester Co., Blue Mt. Reservation Fri. 1-Jul-2011

2011-07-04 Thread Ben Cacace
Date: Friday, 1 July 2011 (3:10p-6:30p)
Location: Westchester County - Blue Mountain Reservation
Reported by: Ben Cacace

All 27 species seen are considered 'Common' on the Westchester checklist
compiled by Michael Bochnik. Ninty-three species are listed as 'Common' for
'Summer' on this checklist. A visit to a few spots should net a good many
species on a summer outing.

When comparing the birds seen with the Breeding Bird Atlas I noticed that
Mallard was not reported for this block (5856B) in the 2nd Atlas. This block
contains almost all of Blue Mountain Reservation including many water
bodies. The 1st Atlas does show Mallard as a confirmed breeder in this
block.

Here's a detailed view of the Westchester County birding map showing icons
for the Metro North Peeksill station and one for the park. Relevant links
were added to each of the icans < http://goo.gl/5ZR9H >.

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-crowned Night Herons at Sammy's Beach, East Hampton

2011-07-04 Thread Anthony Collerton
Flushed 2 Yellow-crowned Night Herons from the bushes along the "saltmarsh"
trail at Sammy's Beach yesterday (not too common East of the Canal).

Other "garden" birds up here in NorthWest this weekend included Yellow-billed
Cuckoo, Eastern Phoebe, Turkey Vulture (scarce here) and a Wood Thrush singing
on Saturday evening (they've been conspicuous by their absence this year).

Scarlet and Summer Tanagers continue (saw the male Summer Tanager on Friday,
Saturday and Monday but did not see the female).

"Bird" of the weekend for me was an Eastern Milk Snake in the yard. New for
the yard list.
