[nysbirds-l] Barnacle Goose - Eastport Lake, Suffolk

2012-01-07 Thread Derek Rogers
Here is a link to Peter Priolo's BARNACLE GOOSE photos:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/73827493@N07/

It appears as if the goose flock was much closer to Montauk Highway when
Peter viewed them around 3:00PM. When I arrived the flock was toward the
north end of the Lake. Hopefully the bird can be relocated and allow for
further study(leg bands, etc.). Peter will be checking the lake tomorrow
and will relay updates accordingly. Please do the same if you happen to see
the goose.

At 3:30 PM, I received a pix message from friend Peter Priolo. It was a
decent digiscope photograph of what appeared to be a BARNACLE GOOSE.

He viewed the goose on Eastport Lake in Eastport, NY. It was, as always,
associating with CAGO's, about 150 of them. Coordinates below.

I arrived on the scene at 4:10 PM. The flock was toward the far north end
of the lake and I decided to post up along Montauk Highway to take
advantage of the full lake view. As soon as I opened my tripod the flock
lifted and flew toward the far NW. It was disheartening.

I searched the northern sod and farm fields until dark and turned up
nothing.

Peter was able to take a few non-digiscope photos of which I have not yet
seen. As stated, the bird was in water and unfortunately was not revealing
its legs and feet. He is going to send me a link to share with List, so
stay tuned and be on the lookout for this bird.

[nysbirds-l] Purple Sandpipers

2012-01-07 Thread ROBERT ADAMO

Having some free time this afternoon, I tried for the Iceland (Kumlien's) Gull,
that has been reported a number of times from Iron Pier Town Beach, Jamesport,
by Paul Gillen. I found Steve Walter there, who had seen the bird before I
arrived, and also reported seeing Purple Sandpipers at Mattituck Inlet, earlier
in the day. Hightailing it there, I too had found the sandpipers (7, in total)
feeding on the rocks, at the end of the west jetty. These were my FOS, and as I
was leaving, they all took off, and then landed on the end of the east jetty.
Cheers, Bob

[nysbirds-l] Orange-Crowned Warblers & Belted Kingfisher (Swindler Cove Park) Dickcissel (Inwood Hill Park).

2012-01-07 Thread Felipe Pimentel
The two ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS are still at Swindler Cove Park (same location
indicated by Jacob Drucker) in addition to the Ruby-Crowned Kinglet, the 2
killdeer and the other birds mentioned by Jacob. Today my wife (Magali)i found
a new bird in the same area (fishing in the Sherman Creek) a female Belted
Kingfisher that was very active during the morning. The bird was fishing or
perching around the creek.

I have some pictures of both warblers (I could bot get one of the kingfisher).

http://www.pbase.com/fpimentel/image/140784328

After that we went to Onwood Hill Paerk and we saw the splendid Dickciseel. I
have seen thar bird before but this one is gorgeous. I have a couple of
pictures of the bird.

http://www.pbase.com/fpimentel/image/140784829

The Nasville warbler was seen before we arrived (around noon).

Good luck if you go to see these birds!

[nysbirds-l] Snowy Owl and Snow Goose - East End

2012-01-07 Thread Luke Ormand
This afternoon I visited Dune Rd. and along some other birders and
photographers easily spotted the lingering Snowy Owl on Warner's Island
best viewed from Road I on the North side of Dune Rd., just east of
Ponquogue Bridge.

The Shinnecock Inlet held a couple Common Loons and some seals but nothing
else of interest was found there or on the remainder of Dune Rd.

Quogue Wildlife refuge held a single Snow Goose hanging with mallards at
the main pond - the bird appeared to have a broken wing. For photos of
these birds please visit my blog here:

The Mountain Bluebird was still present at 2PM today, easily viewed on the
nearest fence on the north side of Rt 25A, just to the east of Hulse Landing
Road. Thanks to a fellow from Brooklyn for pointing it out!

Inside the old Grumman facility were 2-3 American Kestrels, 2 Red-tailed
Hawks, 1 Northern Harrier, 4-5 Eastern Bluebirds, and a single Yellow-Rumped
Warbler.

Also of note there, was a male Ring-necked Pheasant, crossing the road not
10 feet in front of my car. It appeared stupefied, almost as if someone had
just thrown it out of their window moments before and it couldn't figure out
where to go now.

[nysbirds-l] Bald Eagle in New Rochelle

2012-01-07 Thread Andrew Block
Had a Bald Eagle flying over where I work at 10 Commerce Rd. yesterday.  That
seems to be a popular area for raptors.  Since I started working there in
November I've had a redtail, two cooper's hawks, two peregrines, and the
eagle.  Go figure.  Also had the Hermit Thrush back at the birdbath today.

[nysbirds-l] Pine Warbler - 25a & Hulse Landing Rd

2012-01-07 Thread Derek Rogers
I found it very strange to see a PIWA associating with 4 EABL in that same
field where the mountain bluebird was discovered. The bird was working the snow
fence, following the lead of the EABL's. Not only is the time of year strange,
but so is the habitat.

Given all of the recent finds, I made sure to gather all of the pertinent field
marks of the PIWA.

It sure feels like spring but I was not expecting to see that today. The bird
was last seen toward the east end of the field near the yellow farm equipment.

[nysbirds-l] Bald Eagle in New Rochelle

2012-01-07 Thread Andrew Block
Had a Bald Eagle flying over where I work at 10 Commerce Rd. yesterday.  That
seems to be a popular area for raptors.  Since I started working there in
November I've had a redtail, two cooper's hawks, two peregrines, and the
eagle.  Go figure.  Also had the Hermit Thrush back at the birdbath today.

[nysbirds-l] Potential Barnacle Goose - Eastport Lake, Suffolk

2012-01-07 Thread Derek Rogers
At 3:30 PM, I received a pix message from friend Peter Priolo. It was a decent
digiscope photograph of what appeared to be a BARNACLE GOOSE.

He viewed the goose on Eastport Lake in Eastport, NY. It was, as always,
associating with CAGO's, about 150 of them. Coordinates below.

I arrived on the scene at 4:10 PM. The flock was toward the far north end of
the lake and I decided to post up along Montauk Highway to take advantage of
the full lake view. As soon as I opened my tripod the flock lifted and flew
toward the far NW. It was disheartening.

I searched the northern sod and farm fields until dark and turned up nothing.

Peter was able to take a few non-digiscope photos of which I have not yet seen.
As stated, the bird was in water and unfortunately was not revealing its legs
and feet. He is going to send me a link to share with List, so stay tuned and
be on the lookout for this bird.

Cheers, Bob

[nysbirds-l] Barnacle Goose - Eastport Lake, Suffolk

2012-01-07 Thread Derek Rogers
Here is a link to Peter Priolo's BARNACLE GOOSE photos:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/73827493@N07/

It appears as if the goose flock was much closer to Montauk Highway when
Peter viewed them around 3:00PM. When I arrived the flock was toward the
north end of the Lake. Hopefully the bird can be relocated and allow for
further study(leg bands, etc.). Peter will be checking the lake tomorrow
and will relay updates accordingly. Please do the same if you happen to see
the goose.
