[nysbirds-l] Suffolk Co., LI Highlights: White-eyed Vireo, Iceland Gull, etc

2012-03-31 Thread Michael McBrien
Today, I birded various locations in central Suffolk, mainly in search
of early spring migrants.

The highlight of the day was an early White-eyed Vireo at Quogue
Wildlife Refuge. I first found the bird near the trailhead, just past
the animal enclosures. The vireo was loosely associating with a
feeding group of kinglets, chickadees, and titmice as it moved north
in the thickets along the west side of this trail. Unfortunately, it
was fairly uncooperative and silent, providing brief, and often
obscured, views. We eventually lost the vireo near where the wooden
fenceline begins. Also present at the refuge were multiple Wood
Ducks, a Gray Catbird, and several singing Pine Warblers.

A single Raven was present on the Hampton Bays Water Tower, sitting
atop the nest.

A ride along Dune Road produced a single 1st year Iceland Gull (just
east of Tiana Beach) and 6 Great Egrets. Approximately 40 Common
Eiders remain inside the inlet as well as a single Great Cormorant.

Pictures of some of the highlights can be seen at: https://picasaweb.google.com/117391989476777248424/NewYorkBirds2012

[nysbirds-l] Midtown Birding

2012-03-31 Thread Alan Drogin
Two weeks ago the new lawn was laid down in Bryant Park and the daffodils were
in full bloom. By the time the lilacs and tulips joined in the cold weather
returned and caused everything to droop like a bed of rag dolls. Could the
Catbird in the northwest corner been the same one that survived the winter? It
sat out in the open on the curb watching the return of the crowds as if to brag
of its survival. Meanwhile, only a handful of White-Throated Sparrows are
left and I've not seen the variety of sparrows recently arrived to Central
Park, yet. What is now abundant are Song Sparrows, more than two dozen of
them, flitting about the new lawn still off limits to pedestrians. Among them,
a lone Junco. I thought I saw a Savannah a couple of weeks ago at the garden
house on 40th street, but it could have been a small Song - but then i saw it
again this Friday by a statue on 6th Avenue. It lacked a yellow eyebrow (an
Ipswich) but it was finely streaked, the tail forked, and it was kicking up
dirt with its pink legs. Looking forward to also seeing the return of the
urban birdwatchers at Gabriel Willow's Bryant Park walks April 9th. Variety
starts small, then blooms.

Happy Birding from Bryant Park,
Alan Drogin

[nysbirds-l] Niagra Falls-23 Great Egrets,2 Harlequin Ducks, young Bald Eagles

2012-03-31 Thread WilliamWatsonSr
March 31 - Looking from Goat Island at Niagara Fall at the small islands
above the Horseshoe (Canadian) Falls at the former Black-crown Night-Heron
Colony there were:
23 Great Egrets - five were sitting on nests (probably too early for
incubation since one stood up to copulate) possible just guarding their
property.
52 Black-crowned Night-Herons
74 Double-crested Cormorant - about 20 on nests
2 Harlequin Ducks with 3 Gadwalls were about a km upstream from the colony
by the island with two trees on it.
3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls - one adult and two second cycle
Of possible interest on Goat Island was a flock of 8 Golden-crowned
Kinglets, 2 Tufted Titmice, and a very early migrant Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.
Traveling about 6 km south on the Robert Moses Parkway and stopping at the
water intake to check the Navy Island Bald Eagle nest I saw both Bald Eagle
adults and at least two very very early NESTLINGS on the nest !! The
early nestling record for New York is April 11. I suspect it is even later
for Ontario.

Best Wishes for Great Birding,
Bill Watson

[nysbirds-l] Alley Pond Park - Spring Migrant

2012-03-31 Thread Jeffrey Ritter

Despite the dreary weather, a few hours in Alley Pond Park in Queens
this afternoon produced a nice variety of birds. The hot spot was the
area around Turtle, Decadon and Lilly Pad Ponds. Most of the
following were observed in that area of the park:

Pine Warbler (numerous)
Eastern Phoebe (numerous)
Palm Warbler (1)
Hermit Thrush (1)
Brown Creeper (1)
Golden-crowned Kinglet (several)
Blue Gray Gnatcatcher
American Goldfinch (small flock)
Rusty Blackbird (1 or 2)
Field Sparrow (1)

I also stopped at the Alley Pond Environmental Center (APEC) on
Northern Blvd to check for a Louisiana Waterthrush reported by Andrew
Baksh this afternoon. Although I observed this bird yesterday evening
after Eric Miller mentioned that he had found it at the pond a short
distance west of APEC, I was unable to find it again at 4:30 PM. The
bird may still be around though. I did see a second Palm Warbler at
the pond and two Kildeer at the APEC parking lot.

[nysbirds-l] Shawangunk Grasslands NWR

2012-03-31 Thread Bruce Horwith
Yesterday, I birded this refuge for the first time and it was well worth
the visit, even though I was too late to pick up some of the wintering
birds such as short-eared owl that commonly occur there.

Best birds were:
10-20 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS
1 EASTERN PHOEBE
1 BLACK VULTURE among 10-20 TVs
a pair of HARRIERS
a pair of BLUEBIRDS
a pair of KESTRELS
1 BARN SWALLOW among dozens of TREE SWALLOWS

For those unfamiliar with the site, be sure to spend most of your time
viewing the refuge from the north from the Town Park located on Long Lane.

Another bonus were the 20+ GREEN-WINGED TEAL seen at 6 1/2 Mile Station
Sanctuary, owned by Orange County Audubon.

[nysbirds-l] Sullivan County Waterfowl

2012-03-31 Thread flybynight9
I had a fabulous morning of birding this morning in northern Sullivan County.
Last nights weather event produced a significant fallout of waterfowl in the
county. Even small bodies of water seemed to hold at least a few birds. My list
of sightings is as follows:

Kiamesha Lake:

1 - Pied-billed Grebe
3 - Horned Grebe
1 - Red-necked Grebe
52- Bufflehead
9 - Ring-necked Duck
12- Long-tailed Duck
3 - Lesser Scaup (John Haas reported 8 later in the morning)

Morningside Lake:

18- Horned Grebe
2 - Red-necked Grebe
4 - Bufflehead
9 - Long-tailed Duck
2 - Ruddy Duck

Neversink Res. :

2 - Gadwall
7 - Black Duck
10- Bufflehead
5 - Red-breasted Merganser
30- Long-tailed Duck
6 - Ring-billed Gull
1 - Bonaparte's Gull

Rondout Res:

3 - Bufflehead
3 - Red-breasted Merganser
1 - Common Loon

Swan Lake:

4 - Horned Grebe
3 - Mallard
8 - Black Duck
9 - Ring-necked Duck
14- Lesser Scaup
17- Green-winged Teal
20- Bufflehead
2 - Ruddy Duck
1 - Common Loon

Kauneonga Lake:

23- Bufflehead
3 - Red-breasted Merganser
7 - Lesser Scaup

Superior Lake:

1 - Horned Grebe
35- Bufflehead
2 - Ring-necked Duck
7 - Lesser Scaup

Also had an additional 5 Long-tailed Ducks on a small pond near Liberty and 1-2
Eastern Meadowlarks in Bethel.

My only disappointment was I couldn't find any scoters which was surprising
considering the numbers of other sea ducks in the county.

[nysbirds-l] Jamaica Bay birding by train

2012-03-31 Thread Christina M. Wilkinson
I take the A train across Jamaica Bay twice a day now on my way to an from
work. This past week, I noticed an influx of dozens of egrets, and have also
seen both species of Night Heron. I've also seen at least one Lesser
Black-Backed Gull and an Iceland Gull. These birds seem to congregate on what
is known as "Subway Island" and cannot be seen from the usual spots in or near
the refuge. I also saw a male Ring-Necked Pheasant next to the tracks just
south of the Howard Beach-JFK station last week.

There were several species of duck present up until last week. Now I only see
a Bufflehead or two and some Mallards during my commute.

Tough viewing conditions and an overall slow morning but Mike Scheibel and I
were excited to see a fos BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER. The rather dull lighting
conditions really made this bird "pop." A real beauty. It was rapidly moving
about the bayberry searching for insects.

An immature BALD EAGLE was getting harassed by a team of gulls and crows just
east of Great Gun.

The ocean and inlet were both quiet with the primary species being RED-THROATED
LOON. A few distant, loose scoter flocks were seen along the stretch.

Groups of SANDERLINGS worked much of the shoreline.

to me, I never asked or formally received permission to go birding on their

Re:[nysbirds-l] Greater White-fronted Goose (Westchester County)...

2012-03-31 Thread Andrew Baksh
Some additional information on the location. The Goose was hanging around at
the Northern end of Tibbetts Brook Park, right near the area that has a bunch
of kiddie pools and a water slide.
Good and responsible birding!

Subject: Greater White-fronted Goose (Westchester County)...

Alex Pirko and I hiked a few miles from Van Cortlandt Park Bronx, into
Westchester in search of a Greater White-fronted that Alex had seen yesterday.
We found the bird at Tibbets Park(near the lake), where it provided excellent
views. We think this is our Van Cortlandt Park bird that just moved further
north. Good luck if you try for it.

These birds seem to congregate on what
is known as Subway Island and cannot be seen from the usual spots in or near
the refuge. I also saw a male Ring-Necked Pheasant next to the tracks just
south of the Howard Beach-JFK station last week.

There were several species of duck present up until last week. Now I only see
a Bufflehead or two and some Mallards during my commute.

[nysbirds-l] Sullivan County Waterfowl

2012-03-31 Thread flybynight9
I had a fabulous morning of birding this morning in northern Sullivan County.
Last nights weather event produced a significant fallout of waterfowl in the
county. Even small bodies of water seemed to hold at least a few birds. My list
of sightings is as follows:

Kiamesha Lake:

1 - Pied-billed Grebe
3 - Horned Grebe
1 - Red-necked Grebe
52- Bufflehead
9 - Ring-necked Duck
12- Long-tailed Duck
3 - Lesser Scaup (John Haas reported 8 later in the morning)

Morningside Lake:

18- Horned Grebe
2 - Red-necked Grebe
4 - Bufflehead
9 - Long-tailed Duck
2 - Ruddy Duck

Neversink Res. :

2 - Gadwall
7 - Black Duck
10- Bufflehead
5 - Red-breasted Merganser
30- Long-tailed Duck
6 - Ring-billed Gull
1 - Bonaparte's Gull

Rondout Res:

3 - Bufflehead
3 - Red-breasted Merganser
1 - Common Loon

Swan Lake:

4 - Horned Grebe
3 - Mallard
8 - Black Duck
9 - Ring-necked Duck
14- Lesser Scaup
17- Green-winged Teal
20- Bufflehead
2 - Ruddy Duck
1 - Common Loon

Kauneonga Lake:

23- Bufflehead
3 - Red-breasted Merganser
7 - Lesser Scaup

Superior Lake:

1 - Horned Grebe
35- Bufflehead
2 - Ring-necked Duck
7 - Lesser Scaup

Also had an additional 5 Long-tailed Ducks on a small pond near Liberty and 1-2
Eastern Meadowlarks in Bethel.

My only disappointment was I couldn't find any scoters which was surprising
considering the numbers of other sea ducks in the county.

[nysbirds-l] Shawangunk Grasslands NWR

2012-03-31 Thread Bruce Horwith
Yesterday, I birded this refuge for the first time and it was well worth
the visit, even though I was too late to pick up some of the wintering
birds such as short-eared owl that commonly occur there.

Best birds were:
10-20 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS
1 EASTERN PHOEBE
1 BLACK VULTURE among 10-20 TVs
a pair of HARRIERS
a pair of BLUEBIRDS
a pair of KESTRELS
1 BARN SWALLOW among dozens of TREE SWALLOWS

For those unfamiliar with the site, be sure to spend most of your time
viewing the refuge from the north from the Town Park located on Long Lane.

Another bonus were the 20+ GREEN-WINGED TEAL seen at 6 1/2 Mile Station
Sanctuary, owned by Orange County Audubon.

[nysbirds-l] Alley Pond Park - Spring Migrant

2012-03-31 Thread Jeffrey Ritter

Despite the dreary weather, a few hours in Alley Pond Park in Queens
this afternoon produced a nice variety of birds. The hot spot was the
area around Turtle, Decadon and Lilly Pad Ponds. Most of the
following were observed in that area of the park:

Pine Warbler (numerous)
Eastern Phoebe (numerous)
Palm Warbler (1)
Hermit Thrush (1)
Brown Creeper (1)
Golden-crowned Kinglet (several)
Blue Gray Gnatcatcher
American Goldfinch (small flock)
Rusty Blackbird (1 or 2)
Field Sparrow (1)

I also stopped at the Alley Pond Environmental Center (APEC) on
Northern Blvd to check for a Louisiana Waterthrush reported by Andrew
Baksh this afternoon. Although I observed this bird yesterday evening
after Eric Miller mentioned that he had found it at the pond a short
distance west of APEC, I was unable to find it again at 4:30 PM. The
bird may still be around though. I did see a second Palm Warbler at
the pond and two Kildeer at the APEC parking lot.

Best Wishes for Great Birding,
Bill Watson

Happy Birding from Bryant Park,
Alan Drogin
