[nysbirds-l] Blue Grosbeak in Queens

2012-04-23 Thread Daryl Cavallaro
This morning at about 10:30 I spotted an immature male Blue Grosbeak at All
Faiths Cemetery in Middle Village, Queens on Metropolitan Avenue. This was
on the south side of the cemetery in the section along the Christ the King
parking lot. I uploaded couple of shots here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/darylcav/sets/72157629884799233/

There was also a field sparrow in the same area, about 30 feet away.

[nysbirds-l] Midtown Birder

2012-04-23 Thread Alan Drogin
Expecting rain, I missed Gabriel's morning bird walk in Bryant Park. Waited
all day for the sun to appear. No luck, so dragged myself out into the cold
damp grayness at 5pm for signs of fallout. Not a single bird on the lawn, the
sparrows hunkering in the bushes. Curious, however, finding a lot of other
birders wandering around in the dreary weather - a Prothonatory Warbler had
been spotted in the southeast corner earlier in the day, the very same place we
saw the first warbler of the season (a Yellow-rump of course) last Thursday
during Gabriel's afternoon walk. After an hour wandering, the sky lightened a
little, and at 6pm I found it in the London Planes just north of the restaurant
- a favored spot for warbler-spotting in the park. Not high in the canopy, but
just over our heads, making its own little ray of sunshine.

Happy Birding,
Alan Drogin

[nysbirds-l] Barrier Beach Birds (Suffolk/Nassau Counties)

2012-04-23 Thread ken feustel
I did a little late morning and early afternoon birding along the Fire and
Jones barrier beach today. Sunday's coastal storm brought in Lesser
Black-backed Gulls to the barrier beach - I recorded one at Robert Moses, three
at Captree, and one at West End. At Captree State Park my FOY Indigo Buntings
(3 - 2M, 1F)) appeared. My last stop was at West End 2, where, among the many
Dunlin and Black-bellied Plover were single Semipalmated Sandpiper,
Short-billed Dowitcher, and Red Knot. There were about a dozen Bonaparte's
Gulls on the WE2 Marina sandbar, including three in full breeding plumage. On
the north side of the hedgerow six Indigo Buntings flew north into the Coast
Guard Station grounds (4M, 2F), providing a nice splash of color on a cloudy
day. An additional male Indigo Bunting was in the planting area just north of
the WE2 pavilion. Birds in the median included a single female Rose-breasted
Grosbeak and Gray Catbird.

Sue Feustel reported single Iceland and Lesser Black-backed Gulls this
afternoon from Heckscher State Park while Sam Janazzo observed a female Hooded
Warbler at West End this morning.

Good Birding to All,

Ken Feustel

[nysbirds-l] Prothonotary Warbler, NYC's Bryant Park, 4/23

2012-04-23 Thread Tom Fiore
Monday, 23 April, 2012 - Bryant Park, mid-town Manhattan, N.Y. City

A PROTHONOTARY Warbler has been found and is being seen as of mid-day
today at the southeast section of Bryant Park, which is roughly midway
from Sixth towards Fifth Ave. on the 40th Street side of the park. The
bird has been moving in trees at and near the plantings area, & not
far from the larger restaurant, all behind (west of) the NY Public
Library's main branch building. Matthew Rymkiewicz spotted and
reported the warbler. There are a modest variety of additional
migrants in the park today as well. Good luck if going; this is not
even a Bryant Park "record" although new for the year there!

- - - - - - - - - -
P.S., at Central Park in the same borough/city, it was slow going with
the only notable being at least one Orange-crowned Warbler still near
the Loch/Wildflower Meadow area at that park's north end this a.m. - a
check of all the park's waterbodies revealed no unexpected birds,
after the storm.

Manhattan

[nysbirds-l] Late report on my latest T.V. encounter, or, how to bond with one's grandson !

2012-04-23 Thread ROBERT ADAMO

On Saturday, 4/21, I came upon (read, almost hit) 2 Turkey Vultures, while
they feasted on a flattened Opossum, on Manor Rd., between Rt. 25 & Middle Rd.,
Calverton - this being only the 2nd time I've ever seen this species feeding on
the ground on L.I. This general area (mostly agricultural) has been a good
source of T.V. sightings for at least the past 5-6 years, and as recent as 4/1
, when Tom Moran and I had a single "flyover".
The near collision can probably be referred as such, because my 13 year old
grandson (Brian Connors) reacted before I did, to a "dark object", which was on
the shoulder of the road ~ 100 yards ahead. At first, and right up to the time
we almost past "it", I thought it was a black trash bag, that had either fallen
off a truck, or had been placed there by a "good-citizen group" engaged in a
road clean-up project, who would be picking it up later in the day. I guess I
was doing ~ 50 mph, ~ 30-40' from the "bag",and a bit closer to the shoulder
than I should have been, when Brian yelled "watch out for the birds"! It was
only then did I see 2 red heads attached to the "black bag", and although the
birds hopped around some, they didn't take off. Bringing the car to a stop, I
did a "uie" and started to drive back slowly for a "photo- op", when another
passing car caused them to lift off, circle for awhile and then fly to the
east. We waited for ~ 5 minutes,' but they didn't return, even though there was
more carrion to eat.
Cheers, Bob

  A note from Annie:

The Yellow-throated warbler is singing again this morning. It's favoring
the same trees - evergreens and oaks by the comfort stations at the
hatchery. New additions this morning included BG gnatcatcher, Black & white
and blue-winged warblers. Nice birds on a gray morning.

If you're going, aim for the morning - it hasn't been seen/heard after
mid-day.

Good luck!

25 Middle Rd.,
Calverton - this being only the 2nd time I've ever seen this species feeding on
the ground on L.I. This general area (mostly agricultural) has been a good
source of T.V. sightings for at least the past 5-6 years, and as recent as 4/1
, when Tom Moran and I had a single flyover.
The near collision can probably be referred as such, because my 13 year old
grandson (Brian Connors) reacted before I did, to a dark object, which was on
the shoulder of the road ~ 100 yards ahead. At first, and right up to the time
we almost past it, I thought it was a black trash bag, that had either fallen
off a truck, or had been placed there by a good-citizen group engaged in a
road clean-up project, who would be picking it up later in the day. I guess I
was doing ~ 50 mph, ~ 30-40' from the bag,and a bit closer to the shoulder
than I should have been, when Brian yelled watch out for the birds! It was
only then did I see 2 red heads attached to the black bag, and although the
birds hopped around some, they didn't take off. Bringing the car to a stop, I
did a uie and started to drive back slowly for a photo- op, when another
passing car caused them to lift off, circle for awhile and then fly to the
east. We waited for ~ 5 minutes,' but they didn't return, even though there was
more carrion to eat.
Cheers, Bob

[nysbirds-l] Prothonotary Warbler, NYC's Bryant Park, 4/23

2012-04-23 Thread Tom Fiore
Monday, 23 April, 2012 - Bryant Park, mid-town Manhattan, N.Y. City

A PROTHONOTARY Warbler has been found and is being seen as of mid-day
today at the southeast section of Bryant Park, which is roughly midway
from Sixth towards Fifth Ave. on the 40th Street side of the park. The
bird has been moving in trees at and near the plantings area, not
far from the larger restaurant, all behind (west of) the NY Public
Library's main branch building. Matthew Rymkiewicz spotted and
reported the warbler. There are a modest variety of additional
migrants in the park today as well. Good luck if going; this is not
even a Bryant Park record although new for the year there!

Manhattan

Ken Feustel

Happy Birding,
Alan Drogin

[nysbirds-l] Blue Grosbeak in Queens

2012-04-23 Thread Daryl Cavallaro
This morning at about 10:30 I spotted an immature male Blue Grosbeak at All
Faiths Cemetery in Middle Village, Queens on Metropolitan Avenue. This was
on the south side of the cemetery in the section along the Christ the King
parking lot. I uploaded couple of shots here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/darylcav/sets/72157629884799233/

There was also a field sparrow in the same area, about 30 feet away.
