[nysbirds-l] Blue Grosbeak @ Gilgo Beach, Suffolk

2012-04-24 Thread Derek Rogers
Excited about the news of the bunting and grosbeak arrivals I decided
to head out on a late evening mission to Gilgo Beach. It seemed like a
good bet given Pat and Shai's Indigo Bunting counts.

At about 6:15 I located 11 INDIGO BUNTINGS spanning the roadway east
of the main parking area. Only 1 individual was a female.

I decided to check along the edges of the rest of the main parking
area. At 6:45 I noticed a BLUE GROSBEAK foraging along the ground just
west of the main entrance to GILGO. It was located along the south
side of the lot just east (about 10 ft) of the restroom facility.

Some digiscope photos can be viewed at my Flickr page.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Barrier Beach Birds (Suffolk/Nassau Counties)

2012-04-24 Thread Shaibal Mitra
As predicted by Blair Nikula on the Massachusetts list, we're seeing the
fallout of a trans-Gulf slingshot event, in the wake of last weekend's storm.

In addition to the Hooded Warbler, RB Grosbeak, Blue Grosbeaks, and large
numbers of Indigo Buntings reported in coastal LI by various observers,
Patricia Lindsay found a flock of 8 Bundigos at Gilgo Beach this morning. I
re-found her flock and added two more singles from other parts of Gilgo, plus
another flock of 5 at Cedar Overlook. Neither of us had time to scrape the
beaches more thoroughly for other birds.

These displaced birds tend to act very differently from normal spring migrants,
which occur later in the season and leave the outer beaches within hours. In
contrast, these mid-April buntings often remain on the beaches for days or
weeks following a fallout. Here are some photos from the most recent big one on
LI, 16-23 April 2007:

[nysbirds-l] Prothonotary Warbler, NYC, 4/24

2012-04-24 Thread Tom Fiore
Tuesday, 24 April, 2012 - Manhattan (mid-town), N.Y. City

The PROTHONOTARY Warbler is still present at Bryant Park. I found it
after about 30+ minutes looking, low in London plane tree branches at
the north side of the large open lawn, and about where a "break" in
the adjacent plantings is for access to and from W. 42 St., and the
lawn. This is almost opposite the western end of the large white-
facaded Grace building which stands across W. 42 St. from Bryant
Park. The warbler also came down to the plantings immediately near
the lawn for a short time, then back up into trees. Sighting was from
11:55 - noon & unfortunately, one other birder I'd seen had just
departed a few minutes earlier... nor did I see other birders. If you
try, I suggest walking the perimeter of the lawn and the plantings
around it, looking in plane trees, as well as within the vegetation
below. It seems to be the only bright yellow object flying-flitting in
the park this day...

(other birds seen were of more standard variety.)

Good luck,

Tom Fiore,
Manhattan

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach, Nassau County - Blue Grosbeak, Cattle Egret

2012-04-24 Thread David Klauber

A cold brisk morning made birding difficult, but there were a couple of good
birds. A Cattle Egret was along the Coast Guard Station entrance road around
9:45. A photographer told me it had been seen a little earlier closer to the CG
Station. However when I left 10 minutes later it was goneAt the east end of the
Bay parkway, where it turns north to the Wantagh Parkway or straight into the
parking lot for concerts by field 5, there was an interesting Blue Grosbeak in
transitional plumage - blue head, white throat, and mostly brown body. It was
feeding on the lawn near a female Indigo Bunting and a Chipping Sparrow about
10:15.An earlier walk in Massapequa Preserve wasn't very productive - only a
couple of Yellow warblers by the athletic fields and a White-eyed Vireo well
southwest of them, along the unpaved wooded trail about 1/4 mile north of the
school ( Cleveland Avenue?)
